Wimbledon, 1951-53 (and a few other railway memories) JDB, August 2013, minor additions and corrections May/August 2015 Neither this nor its companion piece “Derby Day, 1949” lays claim to any particular literary or other merit; they are merely pieces of first-hand reportage which may perhaps be of interest to future transport historians. In September 1951, I started going to school in Wimbledon. This involved a train journey morning and evening, an experience which put me off commuting for life but which also led to an interest in railways that still survives. In particular, one of the ways of walking from the station to school followed a footpath alongside the railway for the first half mile or so. Wimbledon is seven miles out of Waterloo, on what was originally the main line of the London and Southampton Railway. In due course, this became the London and South Western, then it was grouped into the Southern Railway, and by 1951 it had become part of British Railways. The lines from Waterloo divide at Clapham Junction, a line towards Windsor and Reading branching off to the north, and there are several connections between the two. One is at Putney, where a steep climb leads up to East Putney station on the Wimbledon branch of the London Underground District Line, and a Waterloo to Wimbledon suburban service via East Putney used this until 1941. Wimbledon station had been completely rebuilt in 1929, and in 1951 it comprised ten platforms. Four were terminal platforms for the District Line, this side of the station being essentially self-contained though there was a connection from the East Putney line to the main line just outside. -

SU8656 : Down 'Bournemouth Belle' passing Farnborough http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2620910). This crack Pullman express left Waterloo at 12.00 for Plymouth Friary/Ilfracombe (due 17.17/17.27) and was noteworthy for its Observation Car (at the rear of the Ilfracombe portion), also for not calling at Salisbury but changing engines at Wilton instead. However, it ran in the Summers of 1947 - 1954 only, so was not a great success. Here the locomotive is Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' 4-6-2 No. 35019 'French Line C.G.T.' (built 6/45 as No. 21C19, renumbered 4/48, rebuilt 5/59, withdrawn 9/65).. Copyright Ben Brooksbank. Bulleid Light Pacific No. 34011 'Tavistock' (built 10/45 as No. 21C111, withdrawn 11/63) heads the Plymouth portion of the Up 'Devon Belle', which it will lift up to Exeter Central to join with the Ilfracombe portion (with its Observation- Car) for the journey to Waterloo. -

Pullman Car Services CCoouuppee NNeewwss Special Edition No.2 “The Quality of Service is Remembered Long After The Price is Forgotten” THE DEVON BELLE THE DEVON BELLE – Issue 2 – July 2009 - Page 1 of 13 Coupe News Special Edition No.2 Celebrating 60 years since the introduction of "The Devon Belle" Friday June 20th 1947 In September of 1946 the details of an all new Pullman train were made known with the destination of Barnstaple, Bideford and IIfracombe. Inaugural date then given for the all Pullman car train with the addition of two observation tavern cars being May 5th 1947. In addition to the requirement placed on the P.C.Co., The Southern Railway advised CME O.V.S.Bulleid to equip four Merchant Navy Class locomotives with larger tenders for the service. December 1946 saw further pressure from the SR on the P.C.Co., to have the cars required ready for May 1947. The P.C.Co., identified the need for two cars to be converted to “Observation Cars and four others to include brake accommodation. Structural modifications (as opposed to fitting out) would be undertaken at the SR Lancing shops. Cars No.27, 54, 55 and 56 arriving out of service from the LNER on January 20th 1947. In February a meeting was held between the SR and P.C.Co., at which discussions included details on painting the observation cars, train title, roof boards and service commencement on May 6th 1947. In April the SR traffic manager advised the service would commence on June 16th. In late May SR officers visited the P.C.Co., workshops at Preston Park, Brighton. -
