Towards sustainable tourism in Bali 1 Towards sustainable tourism in Bali A Western paradigm in the face of Balinese cultural uniqueness Sylvine Pickel-Chevalier and Budarma Ketut Introduction 1 As with many tourist destinations, Bali has accessed modernity and globalization through tourism (MIT, 2011; Liu, 2003). This is not a new phenomenon since tourism in Bali has been developing for almost a century, since the first European tourists arrived in the 1920s. At the outset of the process, artists and scientists (Walter Spies, Colin McPhee, Covarrubias, etc.) contributed to creating and diffusing the idea of Bali as a “paradise” in the Western world (Vickers, 2012). This first international tourism influx highlighted Bali’s cultural and natural uniqueness, which has become a national interest since 1950 in the context of independence (Brown, 2011).

It's more than a place; it's a mood, an aspiration, a tropical state of mind.”Imagine walking on a beach, its white sand like a silk blanket under your toes, the sun shining above you, and dazzling azure waters of the sea alluring you to take a dip. In the night, terraces embroidered with green rice paddies and lush vegetation enchant you with their serenity. Calm breezes, the sound of waves, the curls of white above the hills and rooftops as smoke and clouds inscribe stories in lilac sunsets. Idyllic Bali is both a physical paradise and a place of almost mystic spirituality.

See also online at <www.hohnsbeen.de> REPORTS REPORT 2013 Much later than planned... Dear friends, Murphy's law prevailed for us during the year of 2013 despite the fact that the year had started well. The weather brought no unpleasant surprises and we could just made the flight from Vava'u to Tongatapu with the former national air carrier Chatham Air before they ceased flying here, which, as you can imagine, caused a lot of problems in TONGA . From Tonga's main island Tongatapu we flew with Air NZ to AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, where we spent a night and I could purchase a new CANON Camera (PS50HS) with a 50x zoom directly from the factory as replacement for an older broken camera for a good price. The next day we were on our way to Kuala Lumpur with KLM airline. وا ور KUALA LUMPUR is the capital of MALAYSIA , it lies 03° 8' North and 101°42' East and has app. 1.5 million inhabitants. The name in Jawi is We had booked a room for five days in the SILKA MAYTOWER Hotel which is situated in the center of the old town. We immediately liked the town and the people. You could buy everything you needed in a market right behind our hotel, which was busy daily til late at night. We sampled the many different types of food and drinks, - many of them new to us. The ice (used to keep everything fresh) is cut by chainsaw in the street. We marvelled at the many different products, especially the latest electronic gadgets like smart phones and tablet computers, which were everywhere sold cheaply, although probably all counterfeit or fakes.
