R. Radcliffe-Brown in its anthropological phase through its development in American sociology by Talcott Parsons and Robert K. Merton to its explicit formulation in communication studies by Charles R. Wright.Although necessarily cursory, this historical review highlights significant philosophical and conceptual differences within the tradition that have been effaced from recent discussions in the communication context, including an initial theoretical coupling of cultureand praxis, as located by Durkheim in the collective moral code,as well as an aborted culturalist orientation in the works of Malinowski.A concluding section identifies the distinguishing characteristicsof the tradition and points to the emergence of functionalist assumptions in cultural studies and cultural indicatorsresearch as the possible harbinger of a new cultural functionalismthat synthesizes the strengths of various earlier functionalismswhile addressing major weaknesses of the tradition, notablyproblems of logic (i. e., tautology and an inappropriate appealto teleological explanations), political conservatism, anda tendency to impose psychological and sociological analysesupo: specifically cultural materials. -

Theory Preliminary Exams: Guide Questions and Resources Updated Fall, 2015 Preparation for Theory Preliminary Exams should begin early in your graduate program in the department of Sociology and Rural Studies. The procedures for the preliminary exams in theory and methods are provided in the department’s Ph.D. Graduate Guidebook. What is provided in these guide questions and resources are suggestions to help you prepare for the theory preliminary exam. Preliminary exams are based on the assumption that you should be familiar enough with the discipline of Sociology, in terms of theory and methods, before you continue in the program. Thus, the preliminary exams are used to determine whether you are ready to continue. -

It provides a framework that moves from detailed empirical analysis about things, people and processes in the world to abstract theory about the constitution and social framing of those things, people and processes. One lineage of engaged theory is called the ‘constitutive abstraction’ approach associated with the journal Arena Journal[1] Engaged theory is one approach within the broader tradition of critical theory. A second lineage of engaged theory has been developed by researchers who began their association through the Global Cities Institute, scholars such as Manfred Steger, Paul James and Damian Grenfell, drawing upon a range of writers from Pierre Bourdieu to Benedict Anderson and Charles Taylor. All social theories are dependent upon a process of abstraction. However, they do not characteristically theorize their own basis for establishing their standpoint. For example, Grounded theory, a very different approach, suggests that empirical data collection is a neutral process that gives rise to theoretical claims out of that data. -
