This lunar landscape has a majestic, captivating quality. In December 1994 after 101 years of continuous mining—A major achievement for a mining company—the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company called it a day and closed the operation thus putting Queenstown under threat of becoming a ghost town. Now, with the mine under the ownership of Copper Mines of Tasmania, the town and the mine are once again thriving. Although Queenstown is primarily a mining town, it is also a very popular tourist destination offering visitors unique experiences. So, head for the hills and discover Queenstown—a unique piece of ‘Space’ on earth.1 In his discussion of the labour of the negative in Defacement: Public Secrecy and the Labour of the Negative, Michael Taussig opens out into a critique of criticism. ISSN 1837-8692 Criticism, says Taussig, is in some way a defacement, a tearing away at an object that ends up working its magic on the critic and forging a ‘curious complicity’ between object and critic.2 Taussig opens up a critical space in which to think with the object of analysis, cutting through transcendental critique, as a critical defacement, which, in the very act of cutting, produces negative energy: a ‘contagious, proliferating, voided force’ in which the small perversities of ‘laughter, bottom-spanking, eroticism, violence, and dismemberment exist simultaneously in violent silence’.3 This complicity in thinking might be charged by critical methodologies which engage in, and think through, peripatetic movements. -

REPORT ON TASMAN AND CROWN LYELL EXTENDED MINE Leases The workings of this mine are situated upon leases 8891/M of 40 acres, and 8904/M of 20 acres. These leases are held in the name of J. A. Cornish, G. Heywood, and J. Reynolds, and a Syndicate entitled the Horseshoe Prospecting Syndicate has been formed to work the Mine. Location and Access The mine is situated in the Sedgwick Gap between Mt. Lyell on the south and Mt. Sedgwick on the north, about 4 miles north-east from the township of Queenstown. It adjoins the Lyell Comstock Mine, owned by the Mt. Lyell Mining and Railway Company, whose two-foot tramway connects this mine with the terminus of their railway at Queenstown. This tramway follows the bed of the ~ueen River and the eastern branch thereof and has a length of 5 miles. Queenstown is connected with the port of Strahan on Macquarie Harbour by the Mt. Lyell Company's railway of 3' 6" gauge and 22 miles in length. Strahan is connected by Government railway with Zeehan, which is, in turn, connected by the Emu Bay Company's railway with the port of Burnie on the north-west coast of Tasmania and thence with the railway system of the State. Topography The mine is situated on the eastern side of the Sedgwick Gap between Mt. Lyell on the eouth abd Mt. Sedgwick on the north, these mountains being two of the highest peaks of the West Coast Range. The Gap is 1,300 feet above the sea-level, whilst Mts. -

CE:-iTRE FOR ORE DEPOSIT A:"/D EXPLORATION STUDIES Geology Department, University ofTasmania, November 1993. Abstract The Cambrian Darwin Granite intrudes calc-alkaline rhyolites of the Central Volcanic Complex on the Darwin Plateau, western Tasmania. Two distinct granite phases are recognised, an equigranular granite and a granodiorite. A biotite grade contact aureole is preserved in the Central Volcanic Complex immediate to the Darwin Granite. Debris flow deposits of volcaniclastic conglomerates and sandstones, and coherent dacite lavas of the Mid - Late Cambrian Tyndall Group unconformably overlie the Darwin Granite and Central Volcanic Complex, and are in turn overlain unconformably by pebble to boulder conglomerates of the siliciclastic Owen Conglomerate. Stratigraphic and structural evidence recognise three deformation periods within the Mt Darwin - South Darwin Peak area: the Mid - Late Cambrian, Late Cambrian - Early Ordovician, and the Devonian Tabberabberan Orogeny. Mid - Late Cambrian deformation, evidenced by granitic and foliated volcanic clasts in basal Tyndall Group conglomerate, indicates catastrophic uplift and subsequent unroofing of the granite prior to Tyndall Group deposition. This unconformity represents a significant Cambrian hiatus in the southern Mount Read Volcanics. A second unconformit)r between the Tyndall Group and the Owen Conglomerate marks cessation of Tyndall Group deposition with the onset of deposition of large volumes of siliceous detritus. The two Devonian Tabberabberan-related deformations are characterised by, NW and N trending dextral strike slip faulting and locally intense N-trending cleavage development. -

Acid drainage from abandoned mines in Tasmania Dr Shivaraj Gurung FOREWORD Acid drainage, resulting from the oxidation of sulphide-bearing rocks, is recognised as one of the major sources of heavy metal pollution in many of waterways proximal to metal mining sites in Tasmania. Prior to this investigation, only limited information was available on the extent of acid drainage impact from historic abandoned mine sites. Section 37.5 of the Tasmanian State Policy on Water Quality Management (1997) requires that “an inventory of sources of acid drainage from historic mine workings should be carried out”. This reconnaissance investigation provides a basis for this inventory. The program is a component of the proposed State Water Quality and Quantity programs and was largely funded by the National Heritage Trust. Water analyses were carried out by the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment at the Analytical Service Tasmania laboratory. Geochemical analyses, map production and project management were carried out by Mineral Resources Tasmania. This report primarily focuses on acid drainage from abandoned mine sites in Tasmania. It presents new data and the compilation of existing data on water chemistry and geochemistry associated with abandoned mine sites in Tasmania. The report accompanies a series of acid drainage impact maps and an inventory of acid-producing abandoned mine sites. -

The Beardsley Collection, as it is now known, was amassed around the turn of the 20th century by George F. and Alice W. Beardsley of San Francisco and Carmel, California, and comprises ethnographic, natural history and decorative art objects from Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and North America. My research traces and analyzes the shifting sociohistorical significance and value of the Collection through three phases of its commodified career: first as a privately developed collection that reflects the lives and subjectivities of the Beardsleys, second as a museum acquisition and embodiment of mid-twentieth century disciplinary concerns, and lastly as, itself, a museum “artifact” worthy of ethnographic inquiry. -

Journal of Australasian Mining History, Vol. 16, October 2018 Mining the Van Diemen’s Land Company holdings 1851– 1899: a case of bad luck and clever adaptation By NIC HAYGARTH University of Tasmania The Van Diemen’s Land Company (V.D.L. Co.) might be forgiven for cursing its luck when it came to mining, for decades of searching for minerals on its own lands in north- western Van Diemen’s Land (known as Tasmania from 1856) proved fruitless. Its major holding, the 150,000-acre Surrey Hills block, was just outside the rich Mount Read Volcanics zone and capped with basalt which obstructed prospecting,1 while the Mount Bischoff tin deposits, discovered in 1871, were four kilometres outside its boundaries— and that was not the company’s only near miss. For years its prospector W.R. Bell (see Fig. 1) scratched away at mineralisation on the edge of the rich scheelite and magnetite skarn deposit which in the twentieth century was opened up as the Kara mine. This was also situated a few kilometres outside V.D.L. Co. boundaries, and only commenced operation long after the company withdrew from the area.2 Similarly, modern exploration techniques revealed the valuable Hellyer ore body opened up in 1989 in the Mount Read Volcanic belt, only four kilometres south of the V.D.L. Co.’s former Surrey Hills block. Yet mining was the company’s making. The near miss at Mount Bischoff actually enabled it to turn around its fortunes. The V.D.L. Co. struggled for survival for almost half a century as primarily a wool-growing concern before this landmark mineral discovery was made, and while the company owned no shares in the Mount Bischoff tin mine, it did own the nearest convenient deep water port site, Emu Bay (Burnie), and nearly all the intervening land, enabling it to monopolise the Mount Bischoff trade. -
