This lunar landscape has a majestic, captivating quality. In December 1994 after 101 years of continuous mining—A major achievement for a mining company—the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company called it a day and closed the operation thus putting Queenstown under threat of becoming a ghost town. Now, with the mine under the ownership of Copper Mines of Tasmania, the town and the mine are once again thriving. Although Queenstown is primarily a mining town, it is also a very popular tourist destination offering visitors unique experiences. So, head for the hills and discover Queenstown—a unique piece of ‘Space’ on earth.1 In his discussion of the labour of the negative in Defacement: Public Secrecy and the Labour of the Negative, Michael Taussig opens out into a critique of criticism. ISSN 1837-8692 Criticism, says Taussig, is in some way a defacement, a tearing away at an object that ends up working its magic on the critic and forging a ‘curious complicity’ between object and critic.2 Taussig opens up a critical space in which to think with the object of analysis, cutting through transcendental critique, as a critical defacement, which, in the very act of cutting, produces negative energy: a ‘contagious, proliferating, voided force’ in which the small perversities of ‘laughter, bottom-spanking, eroticism, violence, and dismemberment exist simultaneously in violent silence’.3 This complicity in thinking might be charged by critical methodologies which engage in, and think through, peripatetic movements. -

Journal of Australasian Mining History, Vol. 15, October 2017 Shearing the Waratah: “Cornish” tin recovery on the Arthur River system, Tasmania, 1878–1903 By NIC HAYGARTH University of Tasmania ourist guff about Tasmania’s Arthur River insists that it is ‘wild’, having never been ‘farmed, logged, mined or dammed’.1 The Arthur’s forested lower reaches, T which are cruised by tourist vessels give the appearance of being in a natural state, with abundant native bird and animal life. Stands of miraculously preserved ancient rainforest near its middle reaches host guided bushwalking experiences. This is the so-called Tarkine Wilderness. Other parts of the Arthur River system are more like an industrial wilderness. The tiny stream begins its passage to the Southern Ocean by trickling out of the Magnet silver-lead mine’s no. 1 dam, then receives Magnet Creek, half of which spews, stinking of sulphur, from the Magnet mine’s South Adit, plus the alarmingly yellow Tinstone 81 Nic Haygarth Creek, which drains the Bischoff Extended tin workings. Further downstream, the Arthur receives the Waratah River, which in 1910 was declared a ‘sludge channel’, effectively abrogating the Mount Bischoff Tin Mining Company (Mount Bischoff Co.) of responsibility for its various water-borne discharges.2 Before remediation was undertaken by Mineral Resources Tasmania, Mount Bischoff drainage -

The following Notes lay no claim to be an exhaustive description of our familiar '• diabase" or "dolerite" rock, which plays such an important part in the geology and physical configuration of our Island. The present object is rather to place upon record some inferences drawn from the examination of numerous microscopical sections of speci- mens collected or received from all parts of Tasmania. It is by accumulating the results of observations that stepping stones are formed to more complete knowledge. A glance at Mr. R. M. Johnston's geological map of Tasmania, issued by the Lands Office, will show the share this rock takes in the structure of the Island. It occupies the whole upland area of the Central Tiers. On the northern face of the Tiers—the Western Tiers as they are here called—there is a tongue of the rock prolonged northwards past IMount Claude. At their north-west corner it forms or caps mountains, such as Cradle Mountain (the highest in Tas- mania), Barn Bluff, Mount Pelion West. Eldon Blufi: forms a narrow western extension. Mount Sedgwick is a western out-lier ; Mount Dundas another. In that part of the island it is also found at Mount Heemskirk Falls, and on the Magnet Range, two miles north of the Magnet Mine. Mounts Gell and Hugel are also western out-liers. -

This describes a new species (Edmundsiops hickmani) ofbaetid mayfly (Ephemeroptera) from Tasmania, updates the earlier (1936) work by R.J. Tillyard with recognition of a new combination ( Ojfadens frater) and provides the first description ofthe nymph of Cloeon tasmaniae Tillyard. E.hickmani and 0. frater are common throughout southeastern Australia, whereas C. tasmaniae has only been recorded from Tasmania.
