E. F. Benson : Mapp and Lucia before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Mapp and Lucia:

Have watched episode one of the recent tv series and immensely enjoyed the ever so English competition to be the "best" socialite. The book is filled with humor, competition, and all of the English niceties that go with that.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. living in a small town I was amazed at how many of my friends and neighbors appeared ...By Marilyn HeronAs an old lady, living in a small town I was amazed at how many of my friends and neighbors appeared in these stories. Mapp and Lucia became friends with whom I enjoyed spending time . If you have never lived in a small town you may not "get it", but you will find many smiles an more than a few LOL!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The volume is easy to handle while reading in bedBy James Phillip Nelson"Mapp and Lucia" is an engaging, enjoyable read. I recall seeing several episodes of the BBC's "Mapp and Lucia" series on PBS years ago. The book is bringing it all back to me, and introducing these delightful characters to my wife. The volume is easy to handle while reading in bed, and the print font is very easy on the eyes.

A brilliant and subtle comedy on the social rivalries of a small village between the wars. Lucia is probably the greatest creation of E. F. Benson, a social climbing socialite from the small village of Riseholme. A beautifully written and sharply observed comedy, exploring the social life of Edwardian high society. This novel, originally published fourth in the series in 1931, is being republished here together with a new introductory biography of the author.

"No matter how appalling, malicious and pretentious the behaviour of Lucia, the reader is always lured into a sense of affectionate complicity with this comic monster" * Daily Telegraph * "Bitchily observant novel of small-town life" * Independent * "Sparkles with wicked wit...provides some pointed digs at social one- upmanship and the genteelly disguised venality of the upper classes. But, on another level, it can be hugely enjoyed as class-war subversion" * Sunday Times * "The pleasure of Mapp and Lucia is summed up, surely, in Alice Roosevelt's bon mot. "If you have nothing good to say about anybody, come and sit right by me."" -- Philip Hensher "Oh the joy of seeing Lucia again! These magic books are as fresh as paint. The characters are real and therefore timeless" -- Nancy Mitford * The Times *From the PublisherMrs. Emmeline Lucas (Lucia to her friends) is the recently-widowed newcomer to the village of , eager to wrest the reins of social supremacy from the incumbent Miss Elizabeth Mapp and to install herself as its benevolent dictator. In their polite acts of sabotage, as they ruthlessly jockey for the position of cultural arbiter, Mapp and Lucia tear up the conventions of drawing-room diplomacy and enter a protracted conflict using fêtes, garden parties, musical soirées, and bridge evenings as their deadly weapons. Things finally come to a head with Miss Mapp¹s audacious attempt to steal her rival¹s celebrated recipe for Lobster à la Riseholme. With a charming satirical bent, E.F. Benson turns the pretensions and snobberies of English village life into a deliciously wicked comedy. E.F. Benson (18671940) was the son of the Archbishop of Canterbury and a member of a distinguished and eccentric family. He wrote more than 100 books but is best remembered for his Lucia novels, written between 1920 and 1939.About the AuthorEdward Francis Benson was born in 1867 and educated at King's College, Cambridge. Mayor of Rye from 1934 to 1937, Benson was awarded the O.B.E. and made an Honorary Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge. E. F. Benson died in 1940.
