TUNGSTEN SURVEY

Summary

Historically, tungsten mining has gone through several boom and bust cycles coinciding with periods of war and,peace . However, since 1972 , several sharp price increases have occurred , moving up from around $40 .00 per s .t .u . (domestic quote ) to over $160 .00 in the first quarter of this year . A decline to around $128 .00 took place in the third quarter . Current Metals Week quotation (10-14-77) : $149 .00 .

While inflation is no doubt a factor in the price rise, sharply increased consumption in Asian and European countries may b e principally responsible for the continued end-suppler i a ance, espite U .S .A . stockpile releases . In 1974 China and Russia ' were the l g t producers , with the former having by far the largest reserves . The U . S .A . and Russia were the largest con- sumers .

Although a minor metal, tungsten, by virtue of its unique properties, is of .strategic importance and its future l ooks promising . During high price periods in the past and in recent times, various regions have no doubt been prospected to the saturation point by conventional methods ----- guided, by conventional thinking . It is recommended that our Exploration Department adopt a more aggressive stance in tungsten, using standard techniques, but also putting particular emphasis on the search for geologically permiss'able target areas ----- the approach we have employed with some success in por- phyry copper exploration .

Introduction

Next to carbon, tungsten has the highest melting point (3400°C) of all elements, as well as the highest tensile strength and boiling point of all metals . In specific gravity, it is equal to gold at 19 .3 . Consumption is principally in tungsten carbide, steel and other alloys which have impor .- tant application in the production .of metal working machinery, drill bits, turbines, nuclear and space equipment . Its many uses are basic to a rapidly diversifying technology ; consequently the metal will continue to be an increasingly important, if not critical commodity of worldwide importance

In 1974, China consumed 25% of its production ; Russia about 90%. U .S .A. was the largest user that year (16 million pounds) . European countries, South Korea and Japan were other major consumers . According to Metals Week (9-26-77), in 1976 the Soviets purchased 10,000 metric tons . Assuming it was concentrate, this would amount to over 10 million lbs . of contained tungsten! Thus, Russia became a net importer last year .

The relatively new discovery in Western Canada (Mactung) will likely more than double reserves as well as production for that country .

"Conditional Resources " in the foregoing tabulation are essentially hypo- thetical reserves at grades less than . 30% W03 .

Production by individual countries in 1973 and estimated 1980 capacities are shown on the tabulation (Att .A) . No increase in capacity is projected for the major producers ----- China , Russia , U .S .A . ----- however , the World total increase is estimated at 8% .

0rr the lower part of the chart (Att .B) which shows the domestic price trend • from 1950 to 1974, I have extended the line to the present time . The pattern indicates amore or less steady increase from $35 .00 per s .t .u . in 1972 to $160 .00 'in March 1977, then starting down in August and back up in October,

-2- arriving at $149 .00, the current quotation . Notably, the .fourfold increase over the period 1972-1977 took place despite U .S . stockpile releases and without the stimulus of a major war .

I have been able to turn up only one price forecast, which already has proven ultra conservative : (As of 1974) "the price is expected to remain at $75 to $85 per s .t .u. W03 until 1980-1985., unless the U .S . government sales policy is changed .(~~ices are then expected to increase, reaching $90 to $105 by the year 2000 " . Increased demand and rising production costs are certainly factors in the price rise, as well as developmento)in China, the largest exporter . As stated in the 1974 Yearbook t , "consump- tion of tungsten in China is likely to expand .... . Since most of the easily attainable deposits are believed to have been worked out, future production will have to come from lower grade and more complex ."

Probable average annual demand growth rate (primary) is projected at 4" .3% for the U .S .A. and 2 .7% for the World to thee year 2000 (Att .C) . Secondary (recovery from scrap, etc .) rates are estimated at 6% growth annually .

According to USBM sources (3) the sales policy for excess government stocks is a dominating influence on World prices and production . The U .S . started accumulating tungsten in the early 1950's when Chinese supplies were cut off by the Korean conflict . The program was terminated in 1959 and somewhat' later, disposal at regular intervals was initiated . In 1974, 6 million lbs of W03 were sold and by the end of 1975, the stockpile totalled 116 million lbs . Stated objective : 4 .3 million lbs(3) .

In 1974, U .S . companies received 22%*depletion on domestic production and 14% on foreign . Major U .S . producers : Union Carbide (fully integrated)` and Amax (Climax Mine) . Major Canadian producers : Salmo District, B .C ., and Cantung, Yukon-N .W .T .

Economic Geology

Tungsten is not abundant, ranking 38th in the earth's crust (silver-37th, gold-41st) . Major ore minerals : scheelite (CaW04), (FeMn W04), huebnerite (Mn W04), ferberite (Fe W04) . Principal associated minerals' : molybdenite, chalcopyrite, cassiterite, fluorite, bismuth minerals . The ore minerals are high in density with specific gravities of 7 to 8 .

Although tungsten has been found in a wide variety of deposit types, includ- ing hot springs (Goloconda, Nevada) and brines (Searles Lake, California), ninety-five percent of production has come from tac titer, veins and stock- works . The attached tabulation (Att .D) shows the major deposit types, minerals and age of host rocks for various countries . In North America,, with the exception of Climax, the largest known deposits are in tactites assoc- iated with Jurassic to early Tertiary quartz monzonite or granitic intrusives, i .e ., Pine Creek , California, Mill City , Nevada, Mactung , N .W .T .

The geographic distribution of 28 tungsten mines or districts of the U .S . and Canada is shown in Att .E, p .341, from a paper on ''Cluster Analysis" . The author concludes that "cluster analysis can be used to establish exploration priority in unknown areas on the basis of similarities to known metallogenetic provinces" . Searching for ore with the computer has been popular with

* Unchanged as of 1977 . -3- statisticians, but most exploration geologists, including myself, regard' it as impractical . Nevertheless, the map provides a birdseye view of the .prin- cipal known tungsten occurrences**, . the majority of which fall in California -Nevada, and in a belt extending from Colorado to north-western Alaska . Incidently, according to the Mining-Journal Ltd ., August 11','1972, p .101 the Lost River, Alaska, fluorite deposit contains only .0037% W03 .

All known deposits in the 48 States (1962) have been coded as to size and located on a map (Att .F) . The accompanying pamphlet lists 363 deposits with . brief notes as to type of occurrence . Of the total, 260 are in tactites . The reference list may be used to obtain more information on specific occur- rences .

No comparable compilation for Canadian deposits was found in the literature . However, considerable information on mines and prospects in the Yukon was published in 1969 . Wolframite occurs in quartz veins, but the principal deposits are present as scheelite in skarns which formed in lower Paleozoic rocks near Mesozoic intrusions . Thirty-one occurrences are described by the author, Cathro, the locations of which are indicated on a map (Att .G, p .28) .

Mill recovery is 20-24% amounting to 2 .5 million lbs . 70% W03 concentrate ( 7), ore 1 .4 million lbs . W per year ----- a gross value of $1 .00/ ton or $15 million /year at $120 .00 per s .t .u .

Scheelite in tactite "beds" (in Triassic limestones cut by granodiorite) 1' to 25' thick . Mined to 1400' depth .' Average grade : .80% W03 . Production to 1964, 1 .5 million s .t .u . W03(8) . Shut down several years . Plans to start open pit and 400 tpd mill in 1976 announced(9) .

Atolia District, California (10)

Numerous small but highgrade shoots of scheelite were mined from quartz- carbonate veins (Miocene?) cutting quartz monzonite (Jurassic) . Production (to 1940) : 13 million lbs . W . 6% of this derived from placers . Being worked mainly by lessees in 1954(11)' .

Boulder D istrict, Colorado

Ferberite with minor scheelite in chalcedonic quartz veins in PreCambrian granite and metamorphics scattered over'200 miles . Small but rich shoots (+2000 tons) range from 5% to 20% W03 . Production plus reserves : over .. 20 million lbs . W (Att .F, p .9) .

Tempiute, Nevada

Scheelite in tactite . Wah Chang operated for several years, 700 tpd .37% • W03, 70% recovery . According to published data(12) Union Carbide will open in '77 at 1000 tpd, + .30% W03 . Reserves : 7 million tons of ore .

Hamme District, N .Carolina

Huebnerite in quartz veins cutting granite and schist . Mine reopened as Tungsten Queen by Ranchers Exploration(2) at 600 tpd, .40 - .50% W03 . Pro- duction 1971 : 95,000 s .t .u., or 1 .5 million lbs . W .

Salmo, B .C . (near Nelson)

At the Emerson and two other mines scheelite occurs in extensive tactite "beds" (up to 30' thick) near a granitic intrusive(13) . Production 1942 through 1958 (shut down) : 1,100,000 tons .98% W03 . Mill recovery : 85% (Att .G) .

Cantung Mine, N .W .T .

Scheelite with minor copper occurs in tactite within Lower Cambrian lime- stone , near outcrops of biotite granite . Mill 600 tpd 1 .65% W03, 82% mill recovery . 1976 production : 2,500,000 lbs . W . Reserves : 4 .3 million tons 1 .63% W03 . Discovered as a low grade copper occurrence in 1954 by a Kennecott • subsidiary (Northwestern Exploration Ltd .) and dropped in 1968 . Subsequent- ly, scheelite was recognized by geologists of the Mackenzie Syndicate (in- cluding Amax) . By 1962, over one million tons of open pit ore grading 2 .47%

Mactung . Yukon - N .W .T .

Discovered by Amax 1962, drilling in 1968, 1970 and 1972 . Underground development-and drilling in 1973 . Reserves : 30 million tons .90% W03 . Scheelite with cpy, po, moly occurs in tactite developed in 5 separate'` limey horizons of lower Paleozoic age near margins of Cretaceous stock .' Mineralization extends 3000' along strike and 1000' down dip from intrusive contact (Att .G) .

Glacier Gulch, B .C . (Amax)

Small, but recoverable amounts of scheelite occur in this porphyry molt'' deposit . Reserves : 100 million.29%.- tons MoS2 .

Burnt Hill, N .B .

Wolframite quartz vein deposit . Reserves : 1 .5 million tons .75 - 1 .00% W03 .

Sullivan Mining - Billiton,'N .B . .

Feasibility studies in pro ress on deposit containing 7 .1 million tons .39% 0 W03, .22% MoS2 , .11% Bi(14) .

Mittersill, Austrian Alps

Scheelite disseminated in Paleozoic metasediments (quartzite-chlorite schists) . According to the Metal Bulletin Monthly, June '77, open cut mining in pro- gress at a 250,000 tpy rate, 1 .00% W03 . Reserves, including underground ore, 2 .5 million tons at .80% W03 . Rodney Sprague visited this unusual occurrence shortly after its discovery in outcrop . No evidence of mineralization of any kind visible in ore specimens, except under the "lamp" . Anomalous amounts of tungsten reportedly occur in the same sedimentary horizon over a consider- able distance (+100 km?) .

Metallurgy

Various milling methods are used for concentration, including gravity,`flot- ation, magnetic separation, and a combination of these methods, to produce concentrates that contain 50 to 70% W03 . Slimes are usually processed,-chem- ically to produce synthetic scheelite containing 70-72% W03 . For scheelite, 65% recovery is considered fair ; 80%, good . For wolframite, 70% fair and 80%, good(15) . In recent times (since 1959) recoveries have been improved on some ores . 0

-6- Conclusions and Recommendations

Although tungsten ranks far below the base metals in volume consumed, in- creased demand and surging prices have created a situation where the return on a modest sized operation can approach that of a large plant producing some of the more abundant elements . The cost of shipping concentrates (per lb . of W) even from remote locations, is negligible due to their high value at current prices ($7 .00/lb . W03, or $9100/ton of 65% con .) .

From the exploration standpoint, many deposits grading one percent, or better have escaped detection for many years even in well prospected areas . As noted in the foregoing, Cantung was drilled and dropped because of the low grade of the copper (cpy) mineralization . Sal Anzalone reports that geologists from another company found extra heavy sections of drill core which turned out to be highgrade scheelite . The Fox Lake skarn-scheelite deposit with intermittant exposures extending over 31 mile lies in a well travelled area only 6 miles from a highway and 30 miles from the Ross River, remained undiscovered until 1968 (Att .G) . There are numerous other examples . Scheelite is almost impossible to distinguish visibly from common carbonates and rock forming silicates, but it fluoresces with a character- istic bluish-white color under ultra-violet-light . Under present prices, deposits containing .2 - .3% W03 ----- possibly ore ----- could more readily be overlooked, especially if the tungsten was present as the non-fluorescent iron or tungstates .

Although many deposits have been discovered by panning, scheelite is very friable and is converted to slime not far from the source by erosional pro- cesses . Lloyd James has provided a short paper (Att .H) wherein it is noted that tungsten forms soil anomaly "haloes" by movement in solution . Much more information on tungsten geochemistry is needed .

As is true of base and precious metals, there are myriads of occurrences but relatively few known deposits of commercial importance, at least in the U .S . and Canada . However, the future of this element appears bright and dis- covery possibilities sufficiently attractive to warrant Asarco undertaking at least a modest sized effort, particularly in search of geologically permissive targets . Although much smaller than porphyry copper deposits, some of the tactite occurrences are large enough to "hit" in fairly wide- spaced drilling through cover, or otherwise . California and Nevada have been rather thoroughly prospected over the years, but still may hold some potential ; however, the more heavily vegetated, soil and glacial debris covered terrains of the northwest U .S ., Western Canada and Alaska, appear to offer the best exploration potential in North America .

Samples from sizeable deposits should be routinely checked with the ultra- violet light as well as by spectroscopic or chemical analyses, bearing in mind that copper and moly are very common associates . The first 7 holes at Little Boulder Creek averaged .007% W03 . A tactite specimen selected from Mission by Sal Anzalone contained .027% W03, but tailings samples from' ;_both Mission and Silver Bell contained less than .01% W03 . We have no assay . data on Sacaton, Minto or Ox Lake . As reported by Emmons in 1927 (AHF,p .9)` wol- framite and scheelite occur in the pyritic gold ores of Breece Hill, Leadville ' Colorado .
