A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR “The Time Is Now” The 2016 NWAC Men’s and Women’s Championship Basketball Tournament has a new format after 15 years. Yes there are changes to the tournament, but what hasn’t changed is the effort and the desire of these student-athletes as they compete for a championship. Round one was completed last week at regional sites and we now have the best of the best in an “Elite Eight” format. It doesn’t matter who they played, where they played, and how they played. What matters is now the teams are here and their time is now! These student-athletes represent their families, institutions and communities as they compete for the chance to hoist a championship trophy. More importantly these players are learning how to balance competition on the court, in the classroom, family obligations, employment, and the other facets of collegiate life. The life of community college student-athletes is quite diverse and hectic, but what a great time in life! For the NWAC it is about developing Character, embracing Competition in athletics and academics, and understanding responsibilities within Communities. This year, NWAC basketball teams competing at the tournament are partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Everett in a canned food drive. It is important to the NWAC that our student-athletes give back to communities. As you enjoy the games, remember these student-athletes, officials, and volunteers have worked hard for this moment. Remember it is the student-athletes tournament, it is their game, and it is their moment! It is about them! Honor the competition. Finally on behalf of the NWAC I wish to thank all the volunteers who help make this a special event. These volunteers continue to demonstrate to our student-athletes and coaches the principles of character, competition and community by their efforts and support. This really is a team effort and championships necessitate teamwork. Thank you volunteers for your example. Thank you to the Snohomish County Sports Commission and Everett Community College in their roles bringing this event to the City of Everett for the next three years, and thanks to our sponsors and the businesses who donated food and beverages to feed are exceptional volunteers. Marco Azurdia Executive Director, NWAC Welcome to Everett Community College! We are pleased to host the NWAC 2016 Basketball Championships here at the Walt Price Student Fitness Center. Together with the Snohomish County Sports Commission, the staff here is excited to provide a great experience over the four day event for all the teams, coaches, and fans. Special thanks to all the sponsors of the tournament who support NWAC – be sure to check the program for the businesses who contributed to make this event a success. Community college athletics programs enrich the student experience for both players and spectators. NWAC schools have a rich history of producing high performing athletes who go on to play at the four-year college level. It’s exciting to watch these participants compete. In addition, many of the athletes go on to become teachers, administrators, and leaders in their communities in part due to the leadership, teamwork, and communication skills they learn during their playing days. So sit back and enjoy the games, and congratulations to all the teams for reaching the championships this year. DESCRIPTORS Community Programs; Cooperative Programs; County Programs; *Environmental Education; *Program Development; *Project Applications; Regional Programs; *Staff Improvement IDENTIFIERS Northwest Environmental Education Center ABSTRACT A request for the creation and implementation of environmental education in the northwest region of Washington state is prepared in this project proposal. Designed as a model to aid in the development of a state plan for environmental education, this interdisciplinary, field- and people-oriented project of the Northwest Environmental Education Center plans to establish model/pilot projects throughout the region. Implementation is by a three-phase plan. The first, at the community level, establishes a pilot program in the SedrorWoolley school district aimed at staff improvement and development, development of curriculum learning packages, field program implementation, and disseminating information about the program. The second phase proposes a two-part study with the Watcom County Park Board and schools participating to develop a county-wide model for the implementation of environmental education in the schools. A county environmental analysis project will be undertaken with the findings used in school program development. Regional applications compose the third phase and constitute a major portion of the document. The Whidbey Island site is to be utilizedas a regional center for staff improvement and development, operating a program which will provide school districts with a hierarchy of environmental education specialists.
