Whoa, where did that statement come from? Well as we all know, Town of Morinville currently has the pleasure of having 26 approved photo radar sites across town reducing speed and increasing the safety of our residents. Photo Radar otherwise known as the Automated Traffic Enforcement Program includes photo-technology specifically designed to capture a photo of a traffic related violation in conjunction with radar, laser equipment or other existing or new enforcement technology for the issuance of a traffic violation ticket and deployed in a method where a conventional traffic stop by a RCMP or Community Peace Officer was not applied. How is it going to get worse? Recently at a Committee of the Whole Meeting, Mr. David Steer from Global Traffic Group did a presentation on Red-light Video Cameras and Stop Sign camera enforcement technology and how much safer the Town of Morinville would be using this type of enforcement and “freeing” up valuable time of the RCMP and Community Peace Officers to do other enforcement work. The presentation I witnessed appeared to be more of a sales pitch than an information session, and I could tell that it caught the Council off guard. It should be noted that Councillor Turner made it very clear that there has been no decision in Morinville to apply this technology. Also, thanks to Councillor Stephen Dafoe for making the motion to table any discussion on this new technology until the Town’s Photo Enforcement Policy is reviewed, Letter: Albertans should be and to the rest of Council for unanimously agreeing to this motion. The majority of children five and under in the Morinville area are developing well physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually, according to data compiled through the Early Child Development Mapping Project (ECMap). The University of Alberta's Dr. Susan Lynch, EcMap Project Director, was one of the several speakers at the Morinville and District Chamber of Commerce's luncheon Apr. 6. Lynch presented the project's research findings and some advice on what can be done to assist those not doing so well. The project is based on research into neuroscience and the notion that neurons in the brain become connected through environment during the early years of life. "The growth and development starts prenatally, and most of the neurons in the brain are forged during that prenatal period," Lynch explained. "They're not connected to each other. So when a baby is born, fully capable of growing all the abilities, the growth comes from the environment having an effect on what the children are doing. And that environmental effect connects the neurons with each other. That's what establishes a child's ability to do all the magical things that they learn to do in the first five years." developmental milestones that you would anticipate for children at age The EcMap Project looked at children under five for physical health five, you've got a large number of children who are not. Alberta beef, the music of the Beatles, and beer were on the menu for the first Champion Regional Series event. The evening out took place Apr. 9 at the Morinville Rendez-Vous Centre and drew an audience of about 30. Musician Paul Smith said they chose music of 1960s musical icons the Beatles for the first show because of their near-universal appeal. Smith was joined by three other regional musicians to bring the music of the Beatles’ decade-long catalogue to the stage. Those musicians did not offer a Beatles impersonation show with bowl cuts and 1960s clothes. Rather, it was a group of regional musicians putting their own spin on the music. Putting a regional twist on Beatles music was not the only flavour planned for the event. Chef Doug Adsit’s staff from the Green Bean provided an English buffet ahead of the show featuring Alberta beef, Yorkshire pudding, chicken and all the trimmings. Keeping with Champion’s philosophy, Adsit and staff sourced fresh regional ingredients. The theme and date for the next Champion Regional Series has not yet been determined.
