Richard Sheaff Papers Finding Guide Richard Sheaff Papers Finding Guide Prepared by Tara Murray, Ron Gruici, and Tom Bieniosek American Philatelic Research Library 100 Match Factory Place, Bellefonte, PA 16823 August 17, 2017 Title: Richard Sheaff Papers Dates: 1982–2008 Physical Description: 14 boxes in 13 boxes Biographical Note: From 1983 to 2008, Richard Sheaff worked as a design consultant to the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee. In that capacity, he was responsible for the design or art direction of more than 300 released U.S. postage stamps, from Frank Sinatra to Houdini, and Christmas images to Old Glory. As an art director, he directed and supervised designers, illustrators, researchers, and production personnel. In addition, Sheaff has been involved in the design and project management of stamp-related publications, children’s books, retail packaging, and a national direct mail catalog. His eclectic artistic interests are best described in his own words: “I have always found myself keenly interested in a seemingly endless list of vintage things, especially ephemera: stamps, postal history, trade cards, billheads, trade cards, broadsides, cartes-de-visite, stereo views, tickets, engravings, chromolithographs, early American glass, Irish blown three-mold glass, patent medicine bottles, flasks, almanacs, postcards, marbled paper, early letterpress printing, typography, books, African art, record album covers, airbrushed restaurant china, Micronesian tapa cloth…” Abstract: The collection includes stamp files and stamp designs for both issued and unissued stamps, First Day Ceremony programs, and material related to the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee and the Washington 2006 world stamp show.     Hispanic Subjects on United States Postage Stamps The first U.S. stamp to portray Hispanic subjects was the fifteen- cent Landing of Columbus stamp issued in 1869, which pictured a group of Spanish explorers standing next to Christopher Columbus.
