    106 New Zealand Journal of History, 42, 1 (2008) explore in rich detail the lives of his immigrant subjects. The writing is well-paced and engaging. As a result, this book achieves a new level of maturity in scholarship on the Irish in New Zealand. However, there are issues raised here that will give specialist readers cause for reflection. Fraser brings to his subject an unusual richness of disciplinary background and experience, and is aware how his work has been affected by this. Castles of Gold, he writes, is ‘far more “ethnographically informed” than any of my previous writing’ (p.22). Signs of this are evident, and welcome, though perhaps readers will, like me, wish for an even more self-conscious and sustained engagement with disciplinary difference and the possibilities for innovation in content and style that it raises. More importantly, the trans-Tasman connections so effectively identified in this book continue to raise questions about how we should best deal with those immigrants who moved throughout the New World in fits and starts, mobile people whose identities were made and remade in colonial or other national settings. The revival of interest over the last two decades in the diversity of New Zealand’s nineteenth-century European population has been a major achievement. However, the significant challenge remains to fully factor into our histories the ways in which New World experiences transformed what it was, and what contemporaries thought it meant, to be Irish. The definition of foreign official institutions is: "FOREIGN OFFICIAL INSTITUTIONS (FOI) include the following: 1. Treasuries, including ministries of finance, or corresponding departments of national governments; central banks, including all departments thereof; stabilization funds, including official exchange control offices or other government exchange authorities; and diplomatic and consular establishments and other departments and agencies of national governments. 2. International and regional organizations. 3.     CAT CATLINS BUSH AND B EACH CATLINS BUSH AND BEACH Goldfields Cavalcade to Owaka th rd 24 Feb. – 3 March 2018 Gold in the Catlins? Absolutely! Untold tonnes of gold has been washed down the Clutha River (both from it’s present day location and multi- previous routes) on the Catlins north-eastern boundary. Also the Mataura river on its west boundary used to drain the Wakatipu basin and is fed into from the Nokomai. This has resulted in the beaches of the Catlins being quite literally sprinkled in gold! Many a claim has been staked and money and infrastructure invested to acquire this treasure. However by the time the gold made it all the way to the coast from the mountains of origin and tides and currents transported it up and down the coast, only the finest of specks remain. The gold is there to be sure! But the effort put in for the quantities returned is just not sustainable. Energy put into ship building and logging initially was far more profitable. As elsewhere, farming was where the real wealth was to be gained. Today tourism is a key player also in the development and sustainability of the thriving Catlins region.     ‘Some dozen raupo whares, and a few tents’: remembering raupo houses in colonial New Zealand KRISTYN HARMAN Abstract This article traces the genealogy of colonial raupo buildings in New Zealand, and also charts their decline. This decline was in part attributable to the passage of the colony’s earliest building legislation, ‘an ordinance for imposing a tax upon raupo houses’. It draws on census data and settler reminiscences to demonstrate that collective memory of raupo houses became essential to settler New Zealand as a benchmark against which to measure colonial progress. It also shows how, in the early decades of the twentieth century, health concerns were mobilized as the official rationale for both the removal from raupo houses of those few Pākehā who continued to occupy them, and the wholesale destruction of many Māori-occupied raupo homes. By the 1930s, few New Zealanders continued to occupy raupo houses, and their extensive use by early colonists was conveniently forgotten. Remembering raupo houses in colonial New Zealand contributes to recent scholarship theorising the existence of a ‘middle ground’ in the colony, at least until 1840 and potentially up to the 1860s. Introduction As the British Empire celebrated Prince Edward’s first birthday, during the night of 9 November 1842 a fire broke out in Wellington. It began in the thatched roof of Lloyd’s bakehouse. The fire raced along the beachfront at Lambton Quay, incinerating 37 raupo houses and 20 wooden dwellings. Windy Point or Clay Hill (later known as Stewart Dawson’s corner) provided a natural barrier that prevented the destruction of the bond stores and warehouses at Te Aro beach, although the total cost of the conflagration was high at £16,000.1 Nevertheless, the New Zealand Company’s principal engineer and surveyor Samuel Brees concluded that the fire ‘proved beneficial in some respects, for the old raupo whares and toitoi roofs were replaced by substantial brick stores and buildings’.2 The November 1842 conflagration was the first major fire to afflict Wellington.
