New Zealand First Class cricketer Bevan Griggs supports Vanuatu

In a domestic cricketer’s calendar April and May is often a time to relax and get over the niggles of a long summer, head over to England to play or look for opportunities for the winter period. For me, it was a tr igger to visit the NZ Players Association to find out what opportunities Aidan (NZCPA Professional D evelopment Programme) had available. I walked out of that meeting with the idea of travelling to as sist with the development of one of the ICC playing members in the East-Asia Pacific (EAP) region - an in itiative between the ICC and NZCPA.

I was assigned to travel to assist Vanuatu during their recent bi-lateral ODI series vs. Fiji (could think of w orse places to visit!).

I l anded in Vanuatu's capital, Port Vila to 28 degrees, a major change from the 10 that I had left Auckland on ly three hours earlier. With only two artificial practice nets in the country and outfields that have coral cr ab holes on it, training was difficult...but only for me. The players were themselves around with th e commitment you'd associate with world cup champions, not a team ranked 65th in the world. The pa ssion for cricket was amazing, and I didn't expect to see the skill that was on show from the players. The to p players spend time in Australia representing the EAP Team in the annual Australian Country Ch ampionships. Their advanced skills in comparison to the others showed that they had had the fortune to be exposed to some quality coaching.

Th e series meant a lot to both teams; after all they were representing their county so this was no surprise. Ho wever, Vanuatu had an additional incentive. If Vanuatu was to win one game and compete well in an other (losing by less than 2 or 20 runs) then they would become an Associate rather than an

Af filiate member of the ICC. The difference in funding from the ICC is significant if this was to be achieved. I couldn't help thinking what the extra funding could achieve, especially in regards to facilities.

Va nuatu won the series 2-1!

Th inking I was getting dropped off back at my hotel after the game, the horn of the car I was in started 'to oting'. Then the team vans behind us did the same. All of a sudden we were in the middle of a 'tooting' tic kertape parade. With players and supporters hanging out the windows, flags flying and the trophy aloft w e made our way through the city to let the locals celebrate the victory. People from companies, villages, ho spitals, parliament, resorts and sports fields all made their way to the road side to congratulate the team. A tradition that is carried out when any of the national teams win.

During my 12 day stay in Port Vila it confirmed that cricket means so much to so many people from various ba ckgrounds. For a lot of the Vanuatu players cricket provides opportunity for international travel and other op portunities that would otherwise be difficult to achieve.
