The Symbolism of Power in William Golding's Lord of the Flies
Estetisk-filosofiska fakulteten Engelska Björn Bruns The Symbolism of Power in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies Engelska C-uppsats Datum: Hösttermin 2008/2009 Handledare: Åke Bergvall Examinator: Mark Troy Karlstads universitet 651 88 Karlstad Tfn 054-700 10 00 Fax 054-700 14 60 [email protected] www.kau.se The Symbolism of Power in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies An important theme in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies is social power relations. These power relations are everywhere on the island, and are shown at different levels throughout the novel. These power relations are illustrated by symbols in the novel, which center on two different power systems, a democratic system, with Ralph as the head, and a dictatorial system with Jack as the leader. Sometimes these symbols are tied so closely together to both power systems that they mean different things for each of them. The aim of this essay is to investigate the different kinds of symbols that are used in the novel, and to show how they are tied to its social power relations. Those symbols that I have found are always important items that either Ralph or Jack use intentionally or unintentionally. The use of symbols is crucial to this novel, thus Golding shows us that an item is more powerful than it first seems. An important theme in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies is social power relations. These power relations are everywhere on the island, and are shown at different levels throughout the novel. The novel, according to Kristin Olsen, concentrates on describing “the desire for power, […] the fear of other people, anger and jealousy” (2). -

Without a Map Meredith Hall
Creative Nonfiction No. 28 Without a Map Meredith Hall “Don’t be mad. ” I telegram James, care of the American Express office in Amsterdam. “Am heading off alone. See you in India.” The telegram takes a startling four dollars and fifty cents out of the seventy dollars I have left after paying for my hotel. James has the other six hundred dollars. I feel some concern about this, but I stuff the sixty-five dollars and fifty cents into my jeans pocket and stride out of the telegraph office into the streets of Luxembourg. It is a cold, drizzly, metallic day. I am scared, but I like the feeling. The city is just waking up; delivery trucks park on the sidewalks, and men in shiny jackets lower boxes and crates down steep stone steps to men waiting in basements below. Bare bulbs hang in the gloom; voices come in bursts of yelling and laughter. I can’t understand anything they are saying. I shoulder my new red backpack—fifty-six pounds, including the lumpy cotton sleepy bag I bought at the Army/Navy store—and shift it on my small shoulders until it feels comfortable. The men on the street stop their work and turn to watch me walk by. One of them smiles and tips his cap. There is a murmur among them and then laughter. I am twenty years old, and scared. I feel shaky and powerful, recognizing a reckless potency as it takes over decision-making. Nothing can hurt me. I smile back at the workers, lean forward against the weight of the pack, and choose a direction. -
ENDER's GAME by Orson Scott Card Chapter 1 -- Third
ENDER'S GAME by Orson Scott Card Chapter 1 -- Third "I've watched through his eyes, I've listened through his ears, and tell you he's the one. Or at least as close as we're going to get." "That's what you said about the brother." "The brother tested out impossible. For other reasons. Nothing to do with his ability." "Same with the sister. And there are doubts about him. He's too malleable. Too willing to submerge himself in someone else's will." "Not if the other person is his enemy." "So what do we do? Surround him with enemies all the time?" "If we have to." "I thought you said you liked this kid." "If the buggers get him, they'll make me look like his favorite uncle." "All right. We're saving the world, after all. Take him." *** The monitor lady smiled very nicely and tousled his hair and said, "Andrew, I suppose by now you're just absolutely sick of having that horrid monitor. Well, I have good news for you. That monitor is going to come out today. We're going to just take it right out, and it won't hurt a bit." Ender nodded. It was a lie, of course, that it wouldn't hurt a bit. But since adults always said it when it was going to hurt, he could count on that statement as an accurate prediction of the future. Sometimes lies were more dependable than the truth. "So if you'll just come over here, Andrew, just sit right up here on the examining table. -

2019 STAAR English I Rationales Item# Rationale
2019 STAAR English I Rationales Item# Rationale 1 Option D is correct A transition is a word, phrase, or sentence that connects topics or ideas. Adding the phrase “For this reason among others” to the beginning of sentence 6 creates an appropriate transition. In the preceding sentences the author provides facts about the Great Barrier Reef, so this transition connects the explanation that these facts contribute to the reef being a popular tourist destination. Option A is incorrect Adding the phrase “As a matter of concern” does not provide an appropriate transition between the facts about the Great Barrier Reef and the result of it being a popular tourist destination. Option B is incorrect Adding the phrase “For further evidence” to sentence 6 does not provide a logical transition as there is no additional evidence provided in the sentence. Option C is incorrect Adding the phrase “To wipe away any doubt” does not create an appropriate transition, as there is nothing in the preceding sentences that suggests doubts about the Great Barrier Reef being a popular tourist attraction. Texas Education Agency Student Assessment Division October 2019 2019 STAAR English I Rationales Item# Rationale 2 Option G is correct A thesis statement is a statement that summarizes the main point or claim of a piece of writing. The author summarizes that the Great Barrier Reef is “a supreme example of the mysteries of the natural world” because of its plant and animal life. The author supports this thesis throughout the body paragraphs. Option F is incorrect The focus of the paper is the Great Barrier Reef, so introducing the idea of “other barrier reefs” in the thesis statement is off-topic and ineffective. -

Boys Friendships During Adolescence: Intimacy, Desire, and Loss
JOURNAL OF RESEARCH ON ADOLESCENCE, 23(2), 201–213 Boys’ Friendships During Adolescence: Intimacy, Desire, and Loss Niobe Way New York University Longitudinal, mixed method research on friendships, conducted over the past two decades with Black, Latino, Asian, and European American boys, reveals three themes: (1) the importance for boys of being able to share their secrets with their close friends; (2) the importance of close friendships for boys’ mental health; and (3) the loss of but contin- ued desire for close male friendships as boys transitioned from middle to late adolescence. While boys often had inti- mate male friendships during early and middle adolescence, they typically lost such friendships by late adolescence, even though they continued to want them. Other researchers have reported similar patterns over the past century, sug- gesting a need to revise our conceptions of boys’ friendships as well as of boys themselves.
