1 Peter I of Alexandria Coptic fragment Anthony Alcock The fragment in question was catalogued by É. Amélineau in his Catalogue des Mss coptes (1889) and first published by Carl Schmidt as 'Fragmente einer Schrift des Märtyerbischofes von Alexandrien' in Texte und Untersuchungen zur Geschichte der altchristlichen Literatur 20 (1901) fasc. 4 pp. 50ff. Peter I was the 17th Patriarch of the Egyptian Church from 300 to 311. He had held office for three years before the Great Persecution began. During his patriarchate there was an internal threat to the Church from Arius and Meletius, the former on doctrinal grounds, the latter on ecclesiastical political grounds1 and the external one known as the Diocletianic or Great Persecution, which broke out in 303 and came to an end in 311. Peter spent several of his patriarchal years hiding from the persecution and was finally executed in 311.2 The organization of the text does not make for easy reading, and I have decided to copy it as a continuous horizontally-oriented text, each page followed by the English version, so that anyone who wishes can consult both text and translation with ease. This after all is not a work of scholarship,3 but, I hope, one that will be useful to those with a casual interest in the language and church history. The text is from a 9th cent. White Monastery library codex and is now in Paris, where it bears the inventory number Paris copte 1305 fols. 123ff. A Brief History of Coptic Personal Status Law Ryan Rowberry John Khalil* INTRODUCTION With the U.S.-led "War on Terror" and the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, American legal scholars have understandably focused increased attention on the various schools and applications of Islamic law in Middle Eastern countries. 1 This focus on Shari'a law, however, has tended to elide the complexity of traditional legal pluralism in many Islamic nations. Numerous Christian communities across the Middle East (e.g., Syrian, Armenian, Coptic, Nestorian, Maronite), for example, adhere to personal status laws that are not based on Islamic legal principles. Christian minority groups form the largest non-Muslim . Ryan Rowberry and Jolin Khalil graduated from Harvard Law School in 2008. Scriptura 85 (2004), pp. 292-301 HELLENISTIC AND PHARAONIC INFLUENCES ON THE FORMATION OF COPTIC IDENTITY Annette Evans Department of Ancient Studies Stellenbosch University Abstract Conflicting descriptions of Coptic identity still exist today. The Copts regard themselves as those descendents of Pharaonic Egyptians who have retained their identity because of their Christian faith, in spite of Egypt having become a predominantly Islamic, Arab country. They claim to have “caught a glimpse of the Light of Christianity” before the birth of Christ. This article offers iconographical evidence to supplement an explanation of how the ancient Egyptian mythopoeic thinking, in combination with the syncretistic cultural environment of Hellenism, mediated this phenomenon. Today the Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt represents “a return to the apostolic father type leading of the church”. Although pharaonic and gnostic influences appear to have contributed to their remarkable eusebeia, the Copts perceive themselves as having abided by the decisions of the first three Church Councils and have respected and upheld the canon. 1. Introduction The word Copt originated from the ancient Egyptian word for Memphis, Hah-ka-Ptah – the house or temple of the spirit of Ptah. With the suppression of the prefix and the suffix the stem kaPt or gypt remained, which was then corrupted to the Arabic Qibt (Atiya 1968:16). The Hellenes used Aiguptos for both Egypt and the Nile, and Aiguptoi was used by Origen to distinguish Egyptian Christians from Hellenes (Van der Vliet and Zonhoven 1998:117). The Copts have a unique identity: inseparable from their pharaonic past, yet intimately associated with the beginning of Christianity. -

This study portrays the Lebanese Christian national movement as a social movement with a national agenda struggling to disseminate its conception of the identity of a country within very diverse and hostile societal settings. I concentrate on the creation process by the ethnic entrepreneurs and their construction of the self-image of the Lebanese Christian and the perception of the "other" in the Arab world. I study the rhetoric of the Christian intelligentsia through an examination of their writings and speeches before, during and after the civil war, and the evolution of that rhetoric along the periods of peace and war. This is the first volume in the National Histories Series, edited by Professor Sherman D. Spector (of the Russell Sage College, well known to us as the author of Spector-Rene Ristelhueber, A History of the Balkan Peoples, New York, Twayne, 1971), whose intent is «to present the historical evolution of a nation as that nation’s historians see it. In this way, indigenous historians can present contemporary interpretations of their national history, and American readers may gain new perspectives and insights not generally avail able in the West». The original work —Istoria Poporului Român—was prepared for a Romanian audience, and «its success has led to its appearance in an English-language translation». Prepared by 14 Romanian authorities, its 23 chapters, divided into 4 parts (Ancient History, Medieval History, Modern History and Contemporary History), are the best available presentation of the «revised» Romanian history from the contemporary Marxian (socialist) point of view. There are no footnote references, and the bibliography (pp. 618 - 623) refers nearly entirely to Romanian studies. Quite interesting and valuable are 11 color and 144 black and white illustrations. Spector recommends this history «to those dispassionate and objective American readers who wish to acquire an appreciation of the struggles Romanians have endured since they were swept up into the whirlwind of international politics». We heartily agree with his recommendation, although the presentation is not «dispassionate and objective», being a frankly ideological version of the present regime’s views of the «forms of social and na lional struggle whose crowning glory was the insurrection of August 23, 1944, raised to a higher stage in our days by the Romanian Communist Party which serves the noblest causes of our people» (p. -

Shak Bernard Hanish, PhD Associate Professor Lead faculty for Political Science National University 11255 North Torrey Pines Road La Jolla, CA 92037 USA Abstract Christians in the Middle East are facing critical conditions due to several factors. Large numbers of them are fleeing the area in search for safety and stability. Although they belong to different sects, they are simply called Eastern Christians. The paper discusses the current situation of the Eastern Christians in the Middle East, due to the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and extremism in the region, especially with the phenomenon of “the Arab Spring” and the events the followed the U.S. invasion of Iraq. In my paper, I will discuss the phenomenon of Christians fleeing the region especially in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and Egypt where a large number of them are forced to leave their land of origin. They are becoming a target of extremism and they fear Islamists taking over some governments in the region. I will discuss the reasons behind such exile, who force them to leave, who facilitate their migration, and what are the implications of such an escape on Christianity in the East and the culture that survived nearly two thousand years. I will present possible solutions to the problem to keep Christians of the East in the region to save their culture and pluralism. Each of the perpetrators was either funded by those royals, or else inspired by the organizations, such as Al Qaeda and ISIS, that those royals fund, and which are often also armed by U.S.-made weapons that were funded by those royals.
