The Help (2011) Abstract This is a film review of The Help (2011). This film er view is available in Journal of Religion & Film: https://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/jrf/vol15/iss2/17 Miles: The Help (2011) “Change begins with a whisper.” This revolution to illuminate the oppressed and to give voice to the voiceless gains traction and volume from the most unlikely of sources, African-American maids in the Deep South. The Help, based on the best-selling novel of the same title by Kathryn Stockett, centers around the lives of three women: two African-American maids and a young aspiring writer. Encouraged by an editor to write about something that disturbs her, Skeeter, an Ole Miss graduate in journalism, embarks on a project of secret interviews recording the experiences of women domestics. Their testimonials detail the ironies of raising children who will one day rule over them and of waiting hand-and-foot on families while being invisible. -

“Can We Get a Cleanup On Aisle 2?” Previous: The Antisocial Fantasies of Jude the Obscure by Matthew Risling “Can We Get a Cleanup On Aisle 2?”: How Film Critics Mopped Up the Transgressions of Jenny McCarthy’s Dirty Love Sara Swain Pivot is published through Open Journal Systems (OJS) at York University 2 Introduction Dirty Love (John Asher, 2005) is the consequence of Jenny McCarthy’s fearless foray into the risky territory of the gross-out comedy. The film endured a long and laborious gestation period under the threat of financial ruin. The project began as a sitcom pilot that McCarthy had initially penned for Fox Television. Fox passed, deeming the project “too edgy and too controversial for TV” “Can We Get a Cleanup On (qtd. in Kevin Aisle 2?”: Williamson). But McCarthy and her How Film Critics Mopped Up the production team could Transgressions of Jenny McCarthy’s not be dissuaded. They Dirty Love bought the rights back Sara Swain from Fox and McCarthy went to work transforming the script into a feature film (Kates). She insists that she never wanted to be a writer but because of the dearth of onscreen comedic roles for women, she was forced to take matters into her own hands (qtd. in Sobczynski). Dirty Love eventually debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in late January 2005, where it was warmly received. John Cooper, the Festival’s Programming Director, lauded the filmmakers in the program notes for so brazenly travelling “across a comic minefield where few dare to tread.” Soon after the film was picked up for distribution. -

POHLMAN has been approved for the School of Film and the College of Fine Arts by Ofer Eliaz Assistant Professor of Film Studies Elizabeth Sayrs Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 Abstract LAURA E. POHLMAN, M.A., April 2016, Film Changing Shape: The Evolution of Fat Female Characters in Contemporary American Film Director of Thesis: Ofer Eliaz The purpose of this thesis is to elucidate the fluid conception of fat women within contemporary American culture from the early 1970s to the present. Due to their non- normative embodiment, fat women typically face denigration and marginalization. Most mainstream film narratives reify the negative social positioning of fat women, often through assimilationist characters that resign themselves to fatphobia or otherwise compensate for their fatness. On the flipside, carnival and camp narratives foster liberatory fat characterization, as exemplified by the figure of “the unruly woman.” In his portrayal of both assimilationist and liberationist women, Divine functions as a barometer for subsequent fat characterization. Overall, this thesis critiques fat assimilation, argues for the importance of fat liberation, and projects a future where fat acceptance becomes the norm. 4 Table of Contents Page Abstract .............................................................................................................................. -

In the Company of Modern Men: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary Hollywood Comedies A thesis presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Nicholas D. Bambach August 2016 © 2016 Nicholas D. Bambach. All Rights Reserved. 2 This thesis titled In the Company of Modern Men: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary Hollywood Comedies by NICHOLAS D. BAMBACH has been approved for the School of Film and the College of Fine Arts by Ofer Eliaz Assistant Professor of Film Elizabeth Sayrs Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT BAMBACH, NICHOLAS D., M.A., August 2016, Film In the Company of Modern Men: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary Hollywood Comedies Director of Thesis: Ofer Eliaz This thesis discusses the increasing visibility of masculine identity in contemporary Hollywood comedies. I examine how shifting developments in economic, societal, cultural, and gender relations impacted the perception of cinematic masculinity. The men, more specifically white and heterosexual, in these films position themselves as victims and, as a result, turn to alternative outlets to ease their frustrations and anxieties. In order to broadly survey the genre of the past two decades, I focus on three consistently popular character tropes in Hollywood comedies: slackers, office workers, and bromantic friendships. All the male characters discussed throughout the thesis are plagued by their innermost anxieties and desires that compromise their gendered identities. However, these films resort to a regressive understanding of masculinity and functions within the dominant heteronormative structures. This thesis demonstrates how Hollywood comedies present a contradictory and multifaceted image of modern masculinity. -
