5 " IRISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 1990

Binevenagh, Co. Derry, 5/6 May

Once again Nonh West OC gave us an excellent Irish Championships, their third time to run the event. Bincvcnagh proved to be a great area for the event. and the courses were sufficiently challenging to sort OUI the compcrimrs, The new and very clear map. produced largely by Stirling Surveys with financial asslsmncc from Limavady Borough Council and drawn by David Blair was a pleasure to usc. but the area must have caused problems for the planner. Charles Reid: A Ben Bulbcn-Hkc rocky cminence dominates the central and western part of the area, with open mountain above and forest below. Thc A and B courses circled the whole area. the shorter courses remained in the forest. while the C course sat somewhat uneasily between the two. its 7.7km and 21 controls shoehorned into the runnable forest and open below the spectacular cliffs.

The western and northern pun s of the urea proved the most lrucrcsting, wiLh varied vegetal ion und considerable contour dcruil (If the larger variety (spurs, re-entrants. hills). The eastern forcsrcd urea consisted of n large block of fight, rhunk Iulty unvisited. and some Iasr bUI nOI very detailed open forest. while rhc southern part of the map was heathery mountainside. nOI steep bUI tiring - arc there no sheep in the urea to make tracks?

The wcnrhcr the week before hud been very hOI and sunny but had cooled slightly for the Championships, and the exposure or the urea meant there W:lS a slight breeze. Luter starters. however. still had problems with the heat. A refreshment point was thoughtfully provided at a point common to several courses, and was very welcome. All starters were lute, in Iact, as the first start wasn't until one o'clock to allow competitors to travel to the event. The event instrucrions told us that "All courses will sturt on the open hillside - uppropriate body cover should be worn". Just under 100 took part, which was disappointingly low, but not surprising given that this was a Saturday Competition in Scotland. This was very good orienteering, and great fun event, at the end of the season. We were pleased to see Orienteers from too, so hopefully more GEN members will go next year. Well done to John Cork, Northern Ireland and California! As people were competing, the Feehan, of BVOC, who came 2nd in MI7. Contractors were progressing with clear felling large tracts of nice open forest. Is any mature coniferous forest safe from the chop these May 5-6: The Irish Championships. Well done to Kate, Sybil, Diana, days? The courses were short but provived good competition and ensured Michael, Mary, Jane, Maura, Ross, Paget, Paul, and to our W3S+ relay team, some thrills in the chasing starts at Trooperstown on Sunday. In the red who all won various prizes for GEN over the weekend. course, only seconds seperated Shane and Mark 0 Neill, Colin Dunlop and Nigel Crawford. In the blue course, there was less than one minute between May 26-27: Leinster O-Ringen. Thanks to SET for running the Brian Corbett and Justin May. The weather on both days was great. Thanks Saturday event, and to Jane Watt, Brian Heeney and Brendan Doherty to Peadair Dempsey for the barbeque. Colin looked very impressive in the Independent running up that steep hill I (and all the others who helped) for looking after Sunday. Particular thanks to Peadar, who once again looked after the barbecue. MOUNTAIN MARATHON : Why not try the traditional Setanta mountain Unfortunately, the video of the first day (by Darragh O'Kelly) could not marathon on Sunday July 1 st.? This year we start at the Wick10w gap car park and will be using the 1:50,000 Wicklow O.S. map. As usual, be shown, but it will be shown another time (it happens to have a great this event is only suitable for experienced orienteers, hill runners part where a well-known orienteer falls on his face ... well worth seeing). and walkers. There will be 2 courses: long and medium. Juniors must be accompanied by an adult. Conditions on the hills, even in Summer can be dangerous and navigational skills are essential. Future Eyentsi July 19: Midsummer Madness, changed from June. Newbridge house, TIO TROPHY: The Leinster final was held at Clara on May 20 tho with a 3 way match between Setanta, 3Roc and Ajax. Provissional results saw near Donabate, Co. Dublin. Annual GEN fun evening event, followed by Setanta with 88 pOints, 96 to 3Roc and 83 to Ajax. It was a close match barbecue.
