Central Texas Bluegrass Association BLUEGRASSBLUEGRASS BULLETINBULLETIN Volume 30 No 10 Copyright © 2008 by Central Texas Bluegrass Association October, 2008 “BEARFOOT” CTBA 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION: “AT THE CACTUS CAFÉ NOV. 15TH” The CTBA was born at an initial membership convention on January 22, 1978 (at what is now the County Line restaurant on the hill), making this our 30th anniversary year (see www.centraltexasbluegrass.org/History.htm ), and we have decided that we’d better commemorate it before the year is over. For this special occasion, we decided to do something different. We’re bringing Bearfoot, an exciting young five-piece band from Alaska, to the Cactus Cafe on Saturday evening, November 15, and if you’re a CTBA member, you get in free! Our goals for this project were fourfold: 1) to support a young band early in their career, during the winter off-season when festival bookings are scarce; 2) to bring a band to Austin that had seldom or never played here be- fore; 3) to give the band some exposure outside their normal touring radius; and 4) to raise the profile of bluegrass and the CTBA in Central Texas. Bearfoot Bluegrass (the name hearkens to their home state) was formed in Anchorage in 1999, when the six members were just teenagers. These days, there are five of them, they’ve shortened the name to Bearfoot, and they’re already veterans in their early 20s. In 2001, they won the Telluride band contest, and you may have seen them last spring at the Old Settlers Music Festival. I saw them play a couple of years ago at the Folk Alliance convention here in Austin, and along with the Biscuit Burners, they were the highlight of the meeting. Although the band hails from Alaska, they spend most of the year touring in the lower 48. Just since August, they’ve been in Colorado, California, North Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Washington. On October 11, they’ll be at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and next year, they’re booked at Wintergrass. We’re lucky to have them here. With twin fiddles, mandolin, guitar and bass, and with vocals mostly featuring the women in the group, Bearfoot covers swing, singer-songwriter, bluegrass and Americana. Look in the dictionary under the entry for “sultry bluegrass torch singer,” and you’ll find a picture of fiddler Annalisa Tornfelt. If they do “Won’t Be Long” at the concert, you’ll see what I mean. Annalisa has her own solo projects, too ( www.annalisatornfelt.com ) and is an exquisite fiddler. She wrote much of the material for their latest CD. Angela Oudean is the other fiddler. She’s studied at East Tennessee State University, where she played with the Everybodyfields. Kate Hamre is a fiddler, too, but she plays bass in the band and is the band manager. Jason Norris is the mandolin picker. He’s been playing since he was 9 years old, and it shows in his playing. He also plays guitar, fiddle, and bass. Mike Mickelson, a graduate of the Univer- sity of Alaska, is the flatpicker, playing a 1948 vintage D-18. Mike’s style is deft, reminding me of sev- eral other young, really accomplished pickers like Chris Eldredge or Andy Falco. Bearfoot has released three CDs: “Only Time Knows” (2001), “Back Home” (2003), and “Follow Me” (2006). I’ve got the last two, and can testify you’ll want to pick up copies at the show. Check the band’s web page for sound clips. The concert will be at the Cactus Cafe in the old Texas Union Building. The Union building is located on the west side of the UT campus. It runs along the east side of Guadalupe, near the intersection with West 23rd St. We’ll have more details on location and parking in the next issue of the Bulletin. The Cactus Cafe is the best acoustic performance venue in Austin. The acoustics are perfect, and there’s a great sound system with a professional engineer at the controls. I’ve seen everybody from Bill Monroe to Ralph Stanley, Alison Krauss, the Nashville Bluegrass Band, and Laurie Lewis play there. Despite its name, it doesn’t really serve any food, but it does have a bar. We’ll have a membership table set up in the foyer, and if your name is on the CTBA membership list, you’ll get in free. Or you can join on the spot, and get in free that way! Members of the general public will be admitted with a low admission fee. See you there! This is a colorful group which truly enjoys what they do. Left to right they are: Jon Ricketts, banjo, Jon Kemp- painen, Fiddle and vocals, Kevin Willette on mandolin and vocals, Ray Cargo, bass and vocals and last with his magic guitar is Tom Duplissey also doing vocals. They are outstanding with 2, 3 and 4 part harmony that is second to none. Their arrange- ments of the songs, even though most are old time favorites, seems to add a special touch which makes it all their very own. They are all capable of taking lead both in vocals and on their particular instruments. Kevin Willette did a superb job on lead Vocal, with the other guys backing him up, on a song called “Lonesome Pine”. There seems to be no end to the list of songs these guys can perform. This time they did “Scotland”, “Airmail Special”, “Rollin’ in My Sweet Baby’s Arms”, “Why You Been Gone”, “All about you”, and "Down A Windin’ Road”, which is one of my favorites. Jon Ricketts did his “Ricketts Rag” and just sent the audience into a frenzy. It is something to watch these Guys as they pull the audience in and get the participation they want. All I can say is, "They enjoy what they do”, and that is evident. Their antics and the desire for fun make this an outstanding group to watch. 3 4 CTBA Music Teacher Members Eddie Collins Blazing Bows The Sieker Band 512-836-8255 Mary Hattersley Rolf & Bete Sieker www.eddiecollins.biz 512-873-8925 512-733-2857 [email protected] www.siekerband.com Any members who give lessons and would like to be included please e-mail me at : [email protected] BOARD APPROVES NEW PROPOSAL ! ! ! The Board unanimously approved a proposal to allow credit toward a member’s renewal of $5 for each new member he or she brings in during the year. This is a limited time approval to see how well the membership responds. There is a space for “Referred by __________________” on the membership application which can be downloaded off the website or use the one on the back of the monthly Bulletin. The applicant MUST fill in that part of the application in order to give credit to the existing member that referred them. Failure to fill in that space will result in the existing member not receiving their credit. They may not call in after the fact and say who referred them. Only New Membership applications will be counted starting as of September 1, 2008. Most members should never have to pay their membership again, unless they choose to, simply by getting 4 or 5 new members each year they will have credit to cover the renewal. Roy Glover will keep a running total and will advise you on your renewal card as to how much credit you have toward your renewal. Let’s make this work people and increase our membership………...
