Of Montreal EU’s reviewer of Of Montreals recent show in Chicago describes it like this: “The band was adorned in their usual smocks that combined glam aesthetic with whatever term you would use for the fish-man on the cover of it. When you couple this with the three simultaneous videos playing on the screens, you get a sense of what a Velvet Underground/Andy Warhol collaboration must’ve been like. The videos combined psychedelia with bizarre, yet cute, children’s book images. Throw this bizarre presentation in with completely eccentric keyboard-driven pop and neat props, such as 10-foot long dresses and lobster claws, and you get a show that’s more like a contained carnival. I guess you just need to see it for yourself to really understand.” Read the entire review on page 23. Also playing, Loney Dear and Pigeon John. Freebird Live 246-2473

Artist: Vega4 Title: You and Others Release Date: 11.02.2006 Label: Sony / BMG Import

I had to chuckle a little bit. When iTunes read my copy of Vega4, it categorized them as “Alternative & Punk”. Excuse me while I snicker, but I think they belong in the adult alternative category, along with Coldplay and U2. To back up my point, I submit their album, You and Others. It’s produced by Garret “Jacknife” Lee, the producer responsible for recent U2 and records. The sound of Vega4 features simplified, pulsing bass lines and lightly distorted guitar parts that attempt to assert their edginess without offending. The vocals are placed prominently above the music and serve up the primary melody, while the drummer punctuates the slower songwriting with uptempo beats. As a whole, Vega4 are indeed pleasant to listen to, but their songs are utterly devoid of new sonic ideas. If I pretend to hear Bono of U2, I do. If I pretend to hear Chris Martin of Coldplay, I do. At this moment, I’m listening to ‘Life is Beautiful,’ the single from Vega4 featured on Grey’s Anatomy. Even though I don’t watch that show, it’s easy to tell that they play this song at the end of the show during the wrap-up segment. You know, the part where they summarize each character’s predicament with sentimental music cranked up to heighten our empathy. They used to say that anyone who ever listened to ended up starting their own band. Well, the music of Vega4 makes me never want to be in another one. I suppose that if you’re the type that enjoys watching drivel like Grey’s Anatomy, you might enjoy watch- ing Vega4 as they support Augustana on tour. They will be making a stop at the Freebird Café on March 31. - By Donald Dusinberre our fight album review

Artist: Spacebar Title: Our Fight Release Date: 3.2007 Label: 12:24 Records

When Tower to Cessna was playing live shows in Jacksonville back in the late 90s, they were reminis- cent of Sonic Youth and Pavement presenting songs rich with an articulate sense of humor. Since those days, Art and Jimmy have moved to Orlando and struck out in a quest to make their living as a successful band. They chose the name Spacebar and they have evolved drastically over the last five years, even though many of their songs are the same ones I heard them play several years ago. On Our Fight they have made a distinctive effort to create a well-produced rock album that incorporates an electronic sound. They will tell you first-hand that their objective is to create music that people can dance to at clubs, but to be perfectly honest, I do not know what sort of dance clubs play this music. Spacebar has diverged starkly from the indie rock inspiration of their beginnings and they have come to sound more like Motion City Soundtrack mixed with Less Than Jake. Their radio-ready new rock is under- scored with attempts at Postal Service with the incorporation of an electronica element. Some superfan at the show told me that Spacebar has the professionalism needed to make it, but the last time I checked, people bought records because the music was outstanding. To be sure, the production on this album is well above the par of an average debut album, and they even included a supplemental CD filled with electronic remixes of their songs, but that still can’t save these ho- mogenized ditties from sounding like tired gestures void of singable hooks. If you absolutely adore everything that comes on Planet Radio, this might be a great find for you, but you will want to immediately discard the supplemental CD. If you are looking for new music that breaks new ground and makes you want to dance, I would look to Laserstar before I’d worry about Spacebar. - By JON BOSWORTH www.eujacksonville.com
