The list includes records before 1992, which have been published in previous papers, as well as data from an almost ten-year survey using Rothamsted suction traps and Moericke traps. The recorded aphidofauna consisted of 301 species. The family Aphididae is represented by 13 subfamilies and 120 genera (300 species), while only one genus (1 species) belongs to Phylloxeridae. The aphid fauna is dominated by the subfamily Aphidi- nae (57.1 and 68.4 % of the total number of genera and species, respectively), especially the tribe Macrosiphini, and to a lesser extent the subfamily Eriosomatinae (12.6 and 8.3 % of the total number of genera and species, respectively). -

Myzocallis (Lineomyzocallis) walshii (Monell), a North American aphid species associated with Quercus rubra was detected for the first time in Europe in 1988 (France), and subsequently in several other countries – Switzerland, Spain, Andorra, Italy, Belgium and Germany. Recent research in 2003–2005 recorded this aphid occurring throughout the Czech Republic. The only host plant was Quercus rubra. The highest aphid populations occurred in old parks and road line groves in urban areas, whereas the populations in forests were low. The seasonal occurrence of the light spring form and the darker summer form of M. (Lineomyzocal- lis) walshii as well as their different population peaks were noted. Four native parasitoids species [Praon flavinode (Haliday), Tri- oxys curvicaudus Mackauer, T. pallidus Haliday and T. tenuicaudus (Starý)] were reared from M. (Lineomyzocallis) walshii. Pest Risk Assessment of the Importation Into the United States of Unprocessed Pinus Logs and Chips from Australia
United States Department of Pest Risk Assessment Agriculture Forest Service of the Importation into Forest Health Protection the United States of Forest Health Technology Enterprise Team Unprocessed Pinus Logs July 2006 and Chips from Australia FHTET 2006-06 Abstract The unmitigated pest risk potential for the importation of unprocessed logs and chips of species of Pinus (Pinus radiata, P. elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii, P. taeda L., and P. caribaea var. hondurensis, principally) from Australia into the United States was assessed by estimating the likelihood and consequences of introduction of representa- tive insects and pathogens of concern. Eleven individual pest risk assessments were prepared, nine dealing with insects and two with pathogens. The selected organisms were representative examples of insects and pathogens found on foliage, on the bark, in the bark, and in the wood of Pinus. Among the insects and pathogens assessed for logs as the commodity, high risk potentials were assigned to two introduced European bark beetles (Hylurgus ligniperda and Hylastes ater), the exotic bark anobiid (Ernobius mol- lis), ambrosia beetles (Platypus subgranosus, Amasa truncatus; Xyleborus perforans), an introduced wood wasp (Sirex noctilio), dampwood termite (Porotermes adamsoni), giant termite (Mastotermes darwiniensis), drywood termites (Neotermes insularis; Kalotermes rufi notum, K. banksiae; Ceratokalotermes spoliator; Glyptotermes tuberculatus; Bifi ditermes condonensis; Cryptotermes primus, C. brevis, C. domesticus, C. dudleyi, C. cynocepha- lus), and subterranean termites (Schedorhinotermes intermedius intermedius, S. i. actuosus, S. i. breinli, S. i. seclusus, S. reticulatus; Heterotermes ferox, H. paradoxus; Coptotermes acinaciformis, C. frenchi, C. lacteus, C. raffrayi; Microcerotermes boreus, M. distinctus, M. implicadus, M. nervosus, M. turneri; Nasutitermes exitiosis). -

The Costa Rican aphid catalogue is presented from our data and the records in the literature; it consists of 88 species. Data on the species are given and the faunistic composition is discussed. Nine species are recorded for the first time in Central America and another 10 are recorded for the first time in Costa Rica. A list relationships of “host plant species/aphid species” is presented, 79 of which are new for the world and 97 are new for Costa Rica. Tuberculatus quercicola has two winged morphs in its life cycle, winged females appear in summer and sexual males appear in autumn. Previous studies have shown that winged females exhibit higher wing loading (ratio of body volume to wing area) due to ant attendance, resulting in extremely low dispersal rates. It is known that the nutritional quality of host plants is high in spring and autumn, when leaves are growing or senescent, and low in summer when leaves are mature. The present study examined the effects of seasonal plant deterioration on the development of flight apparatus (wing size and flight muscle) of winged females and males. Moreover, field intercept traps were used to examine the extent of dispersal by males. -

Caterino2, Cause Hanna3, and David Holway4 ABSTRACT.—Arthropods have been understudied on Santa Cruz Island, resulting in an incomplete understanding of these diverse and ecologically important members of island ecosystems. To enhance the current understanding of Santa Cruz Island biodiversity, we sampled arthropods in 2 native plant habitats: island scrub oak (Quercus pacifica) woodland and patches of island morning glory (Calystegia macrostegia ssp. macrostegia). We used 4 standardized sampling tech- niques to sample arthropods in 16 Q. pacifica woodland plots. We sampled arthropods associated with C. macrostegia by pan trapping within 1 m of blooming morning glory individuals. In total, we sampled over 18,000 arthropod specimens, sorted the specimens to morphotypes by order, and had taxonomic specialists identify 10 orders to the narrowest possi- ble identification (n = 458 total species or morphotypes). -

A total of 42 species and one subspecies recently (2001-2010) added to the species list of aphid fauna of Lithuania have been taken into account. Two of them – Aphis (Bursaphis) holoenotherae Rakauskas, 2007 and Brachycaudus divaricatae Shaposhnikov, 1956 – appear to be invasive species based on the criteria given by Estoup & Guillemaud (2010). In consequence, the list of the Aphididae of Lithuania has been extended to include 343 taxa. KEY WORDS: Aphididae, Lithuania, invasive species, alien species INTRODUCTION Biological invasions might have an enormous effect on public health, agri- culture and local biodiversity (Mooney & Hobbs, 2000; Sax et al., 2005; Loc- kwood et al., 2005). Therefore, studying the causes and mechanisms of biolo- gical invasions appears to be of special interest among biologists (Cadotte et al., 2006; Facon et al., 2006). En 30 censos realizados en la ciudad de Córdoba y alrededores (Argentina) se registraron, entre noviembre de 2001 y mayo de 2002, un total de 109 plantas ornamentales infestadas de colonias de áfidos. Los censos fueron realizados en jardines, viveros y el jardín botánico de la ciudad. Se identificaron 47 especies de plantas ornamentales infestadas con 17 especies de áfidos (4 nuevas en el área). Se establecen 59 relaciones áfido/planta, de las cuales 38 son nuevas. Se obtuvo el primer registro de áfidos que colonizan Cactaceae en Argentina. La mayoría de las colonias de áfidos fueron medianas y una alta proporción (más del 40 %) mostró individuos alados.
