“We pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed : that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. “ ~ Pius XII, , 44

On this day, August 15, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the United States, this is a holy day of obligation. Belief in the Assumption is one of four that the Church teaches about Mary; the other three being her , Mother of God (Theotokos), and her Perpetual Virginity. In November 1950, Pope Pius XII issued the , Munificentissimus Deus (Latin: The most bountiful God) thereby defining the dogma of the Assumption.

And exactly what does the Church teach about the Assumption Virgin Mary by Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato, c. 1640-1650. and how did it come to be defined? Below are a few things we can learn. Deus limits itself to affirming the elevation of Mary’s body to heavenly glory, declaring this truth a "divinely revealed dogma." On the Dogma of the

The Assumption of Mary is the teaching that: The Immaculate Being free of Original Sin and its stain is not the same thing as Mother of God, having completed her earthly life, was assumed being in a glorified, deathless condition. Jesus was also free of body and soul into heaven [Pius XII, Munificentissimus Deus 44]. Original Sin and its stain, but he could—and did—die.

What level of authority does this teaching have? Expressing a common view among theologians, Ludwig Ott This teaching was infallibly defined by Pope Pius XII on writes: “For Mary, death, in consequence of her freedom from November 1st, 1950 in the bull Munificentissimus Deus (Latin, original sin and from personal sin, was not a consequence of “Most Bountiful God”). As Pius XII explained, this is “a divinely punishment of sin.” However, it is fitting that Mary’s body, revealed dogma” (ibid.). This means that it is a dogma in the which was by nature mortal, should be in conformity with that of proper sense and is thus a matter of faith that has been divinely her Divine Son, subject to the general law of death. revealed by God and infallibly proposed by the Magisterium. What Scriptural basis is there for the teaching?

Does the dogma require us to believe that Mary died? John Paul II noted: “Although the New Testament does not It is the common teaching that Mary did die. In his explicitly affirm Mary’s Assumption, it offers a basis for it because work, Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma, Ludwig Ott lists this teaching it strongly emphasized the Blessed Virgin's perfect union with as sententia communior (Latin, “the more common opinion”). Perfectly united with the life and saving work of Jesus, Mary shares his heavenly destiny in body and soul. Pope Pius XII pointed to several passages that have been Saint Peter's Square, Saturday, 15 August 2020 legitimately used in a “rather free” manner to explain belief in the (Excerpts) Assumption (meaning: these passages resonate with it but don’t provide explicit proof): “Often there are theologians and “When man set foot on the moon, he said a phrase that be- preachers who, following in the footsteps of the holy Fathers, came famous: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for have been rather free in their use of events and expressions taken mankind”.
