Email:[email protected] 2*Department of Plant Science, Olabisi Onabanjo University,Ago-Iwoye *Correspondence author: [email protected] (Received: 24th March, 2017; Accepted: 30th May, 2017) ABSTRACT A pleurocarpous moss found to be anchored and thriving on rock in an aquatic habitat at Ago-Iwoye in Ogun State, Nigeria, was identified as Distichophyllum procumbens Mitt. and described. As the moss had been reported to be corticolous and terricolous in Ghana and Cameroon, this is the first report of its occurrence in Nigeria and of its aquatic nature in Africa. Based on field study and microscopic examination of the morphological features of the moss, observations were made on its structural adaptations to an aquatic habitat. The rheophilous adaptations include, shoots turning reddish brown when exposed in the dry season, “stem leaf ” having border and strong costa, aperistomate capsule splitting into valves for spore discharge, and the presence of rhizoids only at the base of the stem without any tomentum. A total of 63 taxa belonging to Bryophyta (22 families 37 genera 44 species), Marchantiophyta (7 families 11 genera 18 species), and Antho- cerotophyta (1 family 1 genus 1 species) were determined, and the liverwort index was 30.2%. The predominant life form was the mat form. The rates of bryophytes dominating in mesic to hygric sites were higher than the bryophytes mainly observed in xeric habitats. These values indicate that such forests are widespread in this study area. Moreover, the rock was the substrate type, which plays a major role in providing micro-habitats for bryophytes. We suggest that more detailed studies of the bryophyte flora should be conducted on a regional scale to provide basic data for selecting indicator species of Gotjawal and evergreen broad-leaved forests on Jejudo Island. People have long been interested in the question of the nature of the morphology of early leaves and how they were attained. At least five lineages of euphyllophytes can be recognized among the Early Devonian fossil plants (Pragian age, ca. 410 Ma ago) of South China. Their different leaf precursors or “branch-leaf com- plexes” are believed to foreshadow true megaphylls with different venation patterns and configurations, indicating that multiple origins of megaphylls had occurred by the Early Devonian, much earlier than has previously been recognized. In addition to megaphylls in euphyllophytes, the laminate leaf-like appendages (sporophylls or bracts) occurred independently in several dis- tantly related Early Devonian plant lineages, probably as a response to ecological factors such as high atmospheric CO2 concen- trations. Tavares‑Martins1,2 Abstract Background: Many natural compounds have been identifed and synthesized by the advancement of bryophytes phytochemistry studies. This work aimed to report the composition of Neckeropsis undulata (Hedw.) Reichardt moss volatiles, sampled in the Combú Island, Belém city, Pará state, Brazil. The volatile concentrate of N. undulata was obtained by a simultaneous distillation‑extraction micro‑system, analyzed by GC and GC‑MS, and reported for the frst time. Results: Ten compounds were identifed in the volatile concentrate, corresponding to 91.6% of the total, being 1‑octen‑3‑ol (35.7%), α‑muurolol (21.4%), naphthalene (11.3%), and n‑hexanal (10.0 %) the main constituents. Most of the constituents of the N. undulata volatile concentrate have been previously identifed in other mosses, and liver‑ worts spread wide in the world. Conclusions: 1‑Octen‑3‑ol, n‑hexanal, 2‑ethylhexanol, isoamyl propionate, and octan‑3‑one are already known metabolic products obtained from enzymatic oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, belonging to the large family of minor oxygenated compounds known as oxylipins. The knowledge of the composition of volatiles from moss N. undulata could contribute to the Neckeraceae species’ chemotaxonomy. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract We present molecular phylogenetic investigation of Thuidiaceae, especially on Thudium and Pelekium. Three chloroplast sequences (trnL-F, rps4, and atpB-rbcL) and one nuclear sequence (ITS) were analyzed. Data partitions were analyzed separately and in combination by employing MP (maximum parsimony) and Bayesian methods. The influence of data conflict in combined analyses was further explored by two methods: the incongruence length difference (ILD) test and the partition addition bootstrap alteration approach (PABA). Based on the results, ITS 1& 2 had crucial effect in phylogenetic reconstruction in this study, and more chloroplast sequences should be combinated into the analyses since their stability for reconstructing within genus of pleurocarpous mosses. We supported that Helodiaceae including Actinothuidium, Bryochenea, and Helodium still attributed to Thuidiaceae, and the monophyletic Thuidiaceae s. lat. should also include several genera (or species) from Leskeaceae such as Haplocladium and Leskea. In the Thuidiaceae, Thuidium and Pelekium were resolved as two monophyletic groups separately. The results from molecular phylogeny were supported by the crucial morphological characters in Thuidiaceae s. lat., Thuidium and Pelekium. Detailed description and illustration are given. While working on the mosses of Bangladesh, the author came across with a beautiful moss which was thought to be an Acrocarpous moss by its first appearance. There were only a few plants mixed with an unidentified species of Jungermanniales which after a thorough study found to be a Pleurocarpous moss. It was identified as Distichophyllum schmidtii Broth. of the family Hookeriaceae under the order Hookeriales. This moss is a rare one and was only collected by Sinclair (1955) from Kelatuli, Cox’s Bazar, on dripping wet shady side of a ravine. This moss was later collected from St. Martin’s Island, Cox’s Bazar by a student of Jagannath College which could not be collected any more. This moss is a South-east Asian species. It was not found in Eastern India but was reported from Thailand (Gangulee 1977). In Checklists of Pleurocarpous mosses of Bangladesh Khatun and Hadiuzzaman (1994, 1995) reported two species of the family Symphyodontaceae of the order Hookeriales but none from the family Hookeriaceae. Tixier while collecting plants from different forest reserves of Chittagong zone, along with the beach of Cox’s Bazar and hill of Sitakund collected and reported the species Chaetomitrium philippinense Mont. -

It is recognised by the strongly recurved to involuted leaves both in dry and moist condition, leaf cells with well-developed trigones and with conspicuous intermediate thickenings, smooth cuticle, fully incurved free margin of the lobule, and large, reniform underleaves with frequently recurved margins and with lobes up to 1/4 of underleaf length. Morphological variations of some liverwort species due to environmental effect of the forest in New Guinea are discussed, as a factor which might have influenced also the morphology of the new species. Introduction New Guinea is politically divided into two separate regions, i.e. Papua New Guinea and Indonesian New Guinea (Fig. 1). The vascular plant flora of New Guinea is widely known with its remarkable diversity higher than the Madagascar and Borneo, and it also rank among the most biodiverse island on Earth (Cámara-Leret et al. 2020). As compared to vascular plant, the inventory has been less detailed and in general extremely fragmentary for bryophytes. It appears that in New Guinea, bryophyte exploration has been more intensive or bryologically well known in the eastern (Papua New Guinea) than in the western (Indonesian New Guinea) part of the region. -

Although initially considered diagnostic of Physcomitrella patens, the inversion was recently shown to characterize the plastid genome of two species from related genera within Funariaceae, but was lacking in another member of Funariidae. The phylogenetic significance of the inversion has remained ambiguous. † Methods Exemplars of all families included in Funariidae were surveyed. DNA sequences spanning the inversion break ends were amplified, using primers that anneal to genes on either side of the putative end points of the inver- sion. Primer combinations were designed to yield a product for either the inverted or the non-inverted architecture. -

The presented list of Egyptian mosses includes 181 taxa in 56 genera, 17 families and 10 orders. Synonyms reported only from Egypt are given in a separate list. The distribution of the 181 mosses in the 11, hitherto, surveyed phytogeographic territories of Egypt shows that S, Mm, Cai and Di are the richest territories regarding the number of recorded taxa. Pottiaceae, Bryaceae and Funariaceae dominate the flora. Pohlia lescuriana (Sull.) Ochi is a new record to Egypt. Other relevant annotations are also given. Introduction The increasing interest in the taxonomy of the bryophytes, especially aimed at biodiversity conservation has stimulated the elaboration of updated and corrected checklists (Cortini 2001). During the last five decades six checklists of Egyptian mosses had been published by: Imam & Ghabbour (1972); EL-Saadawi and Abou EL-Kheir (1973); El-Saadawi & Badawi (1977); El-Saadawi et al. (1999); El-Saadawi et al. (2003) and Ros et al. (2013).
