No. 73 May 2015 From the EDITOR – Jenny Barr

2015 has started on a positive note, with our senior men’s team winning all but one of their games to date and already up to 210 points (300 Club to note!). It has proved to be very much a year to CELEBRATE some outstanding performances and we look forward to a widely successful 2015!

Women’s – A Silver Lining!

While the New Zealand Black Ferns missed out on making it to the Final it turned into a perverse silver lining for our Nicky Inwood; now Ewins (as Nicky married Richie during 2014; our congratulations). Nicky has never been on the Refereeing team for the Final because New Zealand have always – until now – been in the Final AND have won. So, our congratulations to Nicky on being in the refereeing team for last year’s Final in France. Nicky was a Touch Judge (according to the TV although we all know this role is now an Assistant Referee)

Also, from the Women’s RWC we noticed the following sign

Rugby - invented by men

perfected by women

The Waterboys

A new team has been formed by a group of our past players, who intend to meet for a friendly game immediately before a test each year.

Rugby was well and truly the winner!

Ross Shapley gives us his run-down of The Waterboys tour game vs the Napier Pirates prior to the All Blacks Teat vs. Argentina, Saturday 6th September 2014:

The Waterboys, travelled to Napier for the 3rd annual code day reunion. Thanks to the connection through the University we were able to find an outstanding host in the Napier Pirates Rugby Sports Club who is the local university club for the Hawkes Bay region. The Hawkes Bay weather, supposedly known for its hot sunny days, had been appalling all week - which resulted in a very wet track at Tamatea park.

Hamish Lee got the game under way by kicking off stark naked, a gesture which set the tone for a good, honest game of social rugby played in great spirits by both teams throughout.

The Waterboys found themselves on the wrong side of the referee early on with two seemingly straightforward tries disallowed for dubious reasons.

The lack of spare rugby boots on the side-line made substitutions difficult, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing because we didn’t have any subs anyway. As the game unfolded eventually some good lead up work down the right wing saw Regan Robinson cross for the games first meat pie. He would score two more before half time to complete an impressive hat trick earning the honour of the player of the day.

After half time the Waterboys again came out firing and when Ned Wells finally managed to catch a ball and dot down we were 4 tries to zip up. However the P- Rats were not going to let us have it all our own way, bouncing back to score two successive tries themselves.

After the game the Pirates presented several of the Standout players from the game with a club jersey and also challenged us to a boat race. All in all it was an epic day and we cannot thank the Pirates enough for hosting us in the way they did. The hospitality they showed has proved well and truly that the spirit of both Varsity and Tour Rugby is alive and well in New Zealand; long may that continue. I would also like to thank everyone at the Canterbury University Rugby club for helping us get the team registered again this year. Until next year…..

All Blacks captain coping well with studies

Kieran Read and Glenn Fyall (also the Asst. Coach for the Varsity Men’s Div 1 team, 2014)

Crusaders and All Blacks captain Kieran Read says he is coping well with a full-on rugby career and helping look after two young daughters while also studying for a sports coaching degree.

Kieran was recovering from concussion during 2014 which has made him think at times about life after his playing career and a likely move into rugby coaching.

"It’s great being able to do this degree at the University of Canterbury, through the School of Sport and Physical Education. I won’t graduate for another year or so as rugby continues to take up a lot of my time. But I manage to study and do a lot of my work when on tour with the or the All Blacks. I actually have more time then.”

Kieran’s supervisor, Glenn Fyall, the Acting Head of the School of Sport and Physical Education, says a big part of the university’s sport coaching programme involves delivering content to student groups.

One of Kieran’s recent assessments involved a presentation to second year students on selected concepts of leadership as it related to the All Black context. He was superb. He will be delivering this again to year two students in the next semester.

Kieran began studying the Bachelor of Sport Coaching at the University of Canterbury in 2005 and completed two years of the three degree but as his professional career gathered momentum and the demands became greater he deferred his studies and put his efforts into his rugby.

In recent years we have implemented flexible on-line learning that enables students like Kieran to achieve the qualification from anywhere in the world.

2014 Varsity Senior Team As an additional measure of just how young the team was - 8 of them made the Canterbury Under 19 Representative team. We can therefore look forward to some good results over the next 2-3 years as they mature. Fingers crossed for ‘good times ahead’

Our Scottish Link

Adam Ashe, the new No.8 for Scotland, came over from Scotland to play for Varsity during 2014. Subsequently called into the Scottish Team and played his test debut against South Africa, in South Africa, on 28th June 2014. Lost 55-6. The new Scottish coach is Kiwi Vern Cotter. We can expect good things from Scotland over the coming years, Slaintè
