Anders Hallberg Professor, Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University 4 Photo: Martin Cejie A GUIDE TO THIS GUIDE Part 1 A Guide to this Guide Among all of the different categories of International Students (free-movers, International Master students, formal exchange stu- dents, international doctoral students, etc.), special information has been compiled for Formal Exchange Students in Part III. A Formal Exchange Student comes from a home university which Uppsala University has an exchange agreement with and has been admitted from the nominations submitted by the home university. Special arrangements have been made because of the contract agreement between the partner universities. Not sure if you are a Formal Ex- change Student? Get in touch with your Contact person at Uppsala University to find out. Formal Exchange Students need to stop reading the general information in Part II as soon as they see this headline: Special information for Formal Exchange students in Part III. Part I describes Sweden, particularly the town of Uppsala and unique features about Uppsala University. Part II gives very practical information to begin your adventure, but also how to get the most out of your studies while here. This Guide contains a lot of practical information for getting ori- ented and settled into your studies in Uppsala, Sweden. If you are already well established in Uppsala and can understand Swedish, you may want to refer to the Swedish version of this guide, “Stu- dentguiden”, instead. The terminology, typically used at a traditional and historical university such as Uppsala University, is explained among other useful information. 5 6 Photo: Carlis Fridlund UPPSALA UNIVERSITY Uppsala University Uppsala University is the oldest university In December every year the new Nobel in Scandinavia – founded in 1477. Nordic Fascism Investigating the Political Project Behind Bollhusmötet Master’s thesis (45 credits) Author’s name: Erik Blohmé Name of supervisor: Heléne Lööw Semester: Spring 2021 Date of Submission: May 17, 2021 HISTORISKA INSTITUTIONEN Abstract This thesis investigates the political project behind the infamous tennis hall meeting, commonly referred to as Bollhusmötet, that took place in February of 1939 in Uppsala, Sweden. Gathering in the local tennis hall, the members of the Uppsala Student Union decided to send a resolution to the Swedish king protesting the reception of Jewish refugees into Sweden in the wake of the 1938 November Pogrom. The protest was widely influential, spurring similar resolutions at other universities and arguably influencing Swedish refugee policy on a national level. The event itself was orchestrated by a group of nationalist students as part of a political project aiming to establish a Nordic power bloc with Sweden as the central power. This political milieu rejected the geopolitics of both England and Germany to promote a specific form of Nordic fascism. Antisemitism was a central part of their ideology, both regarding short- and long-term goals, and antisemitism was also the ultimate motive behind the tennis hall meeting. The architects of these events joined the mainstream conservative milieu in 1940 as part of a strategy to abolish the Swedish political system from within and restructure the Swedish state according to a fascist model bearing many similarities to national socialism. Keywords: Bollhusmötet, Heimdal, Den Svenska Linjen, Arvid Fredborg, fascism, antisemitism, national socialism, Nazism. Acknowledgments I would like to express my gratitude to Heléne Lööw who has supervised this thesis with patience, honesty, and great care.

  • International Phd Students' Experiences in Uppsala
ISSN 1653-2244 INSTITUTIONEN FÖR KULTURANTROPOLOGI OCH ETNOLOGI DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY AND ETHNOLOGY Between Dark Days and Light Nights: International PhD Students’ Experiences in Uppsala By Stefanie Mallow 2017 MASTERUPPSATSER I KULTURANTROPOLOGI Nr 69 Abstract Analysing what it means being neither immigrant nor tourist in a foreign country, this thesis looks at the experiences of international PhD students and their supervisors in the Swedish university town Uppsala. The Faculty of Science and Technology of Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) are the universities studied. Based on anthropological methods, this thesis focuses on the individual actors as they attempt to match the objective of doing a PhD while at the same time being in a different country. Using practice theory, the study highlights that the experiences of international PhD students and the people working with them vary greatly from PhD student to PhD student. Yet, almost all undergo a certain form of self-formation and adjustment process to match the requirements of not only their host country, but also the international field of science they attempt to enter. Being connected to other people in similar situations can help them adapt to this new environment, and many international PhD students join communities of practice. I argue that most develop an internationally recognised habitus, which helps them being recognised by the international community. The habitus can further, under certain circumstances, become partially conscious. KEY WORDS: International PhD Students, Supervisors, Higher Education, Practice Theory, Sweden, Anthropology, Mobility [email protected] ii Acknowledgements First and foremost, I would like to thank all of my informants: without their time, their trust in me, and their stories – the good ones as well as the bad ones – this thesis would not have been possible.
