  • Associations and the Establishment of Musical Expression Dissertation
Known by the Company It Keeps: Associations and the Establishment of Musical Expression Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Ryan Clifford Jordan, M.A. Graduate Program in Philosophy The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Lee B. Brown, Co-advisor Daniel Farrell, Co-advisor Diana Raffman Sukjae Lee Donald Hubin Copyright by Ryan Clifford Jordan 2009 Abstract I argue for an association theory of musical expression, whereby music acquires its expressive character through associations with extra - musical content. Musical works can be roughly categorized into two groups: absolute works—works, such as Bach’s “Invention No. 13 in A minor” and Scriabin’s “Prelude in B major, Op. 2, No.2”, that are not accompanied by any descriptive title, text, or program—and non-absolute works—works, such as Schubert’s “Ave Maria” and Williams’ Theme from Harry Potter, that are. I argue that the best approach to developing a theory of musical expression begins with an analysis of non-absolute music. Analyzing non-absolute music, I show that musical expression is intimately tied up with associations that stem from those texts, titles, and programs. The benefit of this approach is that it straightforwardly explains not only non-absolute music’s expressive properties, but also how absolute music has its expressive properties. I argue that expression is tied up not only with whole pieces but also with musical elements such as timbre, rhythm, tempo, and melodic gestures. These musica l elements are the same in both absolute and non-absolute music, so associations established with non-absolute music simply carry through to the absolute musical ii works.

  • ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY - Biography
ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY - Biography ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY is one of the finest singer/songwriters of our generation. The statuesque performer dazzles music lovers as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, and educator. Her talents have made her equally at home in jazz and pop as well as on stage, in the recording studio, on TV and in film. She is best known for starring in the hit Broadway musical "SWING!" and for writing and singing the theme to the internationally successful TV series,” THE NANNY". Ann is a devoted keeper-of-the-flame of the great American songbook. She brings fresh and original interpretations to these timeless classics and works to uphold the canon by writing songs with Cole Porter, Carole King, Barbara Carroll and others. Her spontaneity, intelligence, and soulful charisma have won her a diverse fan-base including notables as Barbra Streisand, Clive Davis, Carly Simon and Wynton Marsalis. The New York Times writes, “For sheer vocal beauty, no contemporary singer matches Ms. Callaway.” Ann attributes her voice and love of music to her mother, Shirley, who throughout her childhood sang and played torch songs, Gershwin and German lieder at the piano. Of the uniquely musical household she says, “I didn’t know it at the time, but we were sort of the Von Trapp family of Chicago.” After a music teacher discovered her unusually mature soprano voice, Ann was encouraged to study classically, honing the pitch-perfect control and expressive three octave range she is known for. While her voice teachers suggested she could have a career in opera, Ann eventually realized that she would be happier singing the music she most loved.

  • An Analysis of Social Media Marketing in the Classical Music Industry
#CLASSICAL: AN ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING IN THE CLASSICAL MUSIC INDUSTRY Ms Annabelle Angela Lan Lee Royal Holloway, University of London (2017) A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Music) Page 1 of 299 Page intentionally left blank. Page 2 of 299 Declaration of Authorship I Annabelle Angela Lan Lee hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 28 April 2017 Page 3 of 299 Page intentionally left blank. Page 4 of 299 Abstract With the re-emergence of social media in the 2000s and the increased worldwide usage of mobile devices, the impact of social media still cannot be ignored. From corporate businesses to popular culture, social media are now used in many sectors of society. Not least among these is the classical music industry. Artists and organisations have keenly capitalised on social media in the face of increasing budgetary reductions in the arts and long-held elitist perceptions of classical music. In addition, the classical music business has used social media to profit from economic growth, audiences, and public profiles, and to market accessibility, relevance, and value to a wider audience, notably, younger demographics and non-attenders. As a result, the classical music scene tries to engender technological determinism and digital optimism, ideologies reflecting discourses around Web 2.0/social media. Simultaneously, a so-called ‘digital divide’ is at risk. Various factors, for example, socioeconomic strata, greatly influence how classical music is marketed and branded on social media networks, however, they are barriers to access and enjoyment of the art, online and offline.

Wherever you are, we hope it’s not as hot and dry as it is here in literally-on-fire Colorado. Here in mid-July, most folks are approaching some sort of break or vacation. We’ll keep plugging away, but the world of audio shows is about to go on hiatus, following the highly-energetic Capital Audiofest (and we’re happy to offer an amazing photo spread from CapFest by Eric Franklin Shook). The Rocky Mountain Audio Fest is the next major show in North Amer- ica, coinciding with the turning of the leaves here in early October. TAVES, in Toronto, quickly follows in November, and rumors are ram- pant about a show in NYC.

  • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.

He Bob Ketchum’s multimedia bio was speaking with Entertainment Fort Smith on the eve of a shared birthday: Ketchum turned 65 and his son Robert W. Ketchum III was 14. brings back ’70s Rock memories Ketchum's marriage to his wife, Jane; the birth of their son, a close relationship with his older by Lynn Wasson daughter, Missy, and his grandchildren are the joy he calls “a gift of a second chance at life.” Face the Music includes Ketchum's career after his Fort Smith radio years, establishing an audio/video recording business near Mountain Home in the house his parents built at Lake Norfolk. His personal life and career have been a bumpy but enthusiastic ride, pitting his unflagging passion for music with the tough realities of “the music business.” Local music fans will recognize bands and artists Paperkid, Joe Hamilton, Judge Parker, the Cate Brothers and many more who were recorded by Ketchum. Cedar Crest Studio also recorded pre-production tracks for the Swedish metal band Krokus. The book's highlight for Fort Smith readers, however, will be Ketchum's retelling of memories they share with him. Besides “Album Review,” radio listeners from 1969-75 may remember the station's truck with a Plexiglas window revealing Ketchum inside spinning 45s at live remote events and “battles of bands.” Ketchum at the board at KWHN/KMAG, which broadcast his show “Album Review.” “The vehicle was a converted bread truck, an Inset: Whizz performs at a KISR Frisbee Festival in 1974.
