Elle est la fille de Christiane Janna Lange Kielland (1820-1862) et de Jens Zetlitz Kielland (1816-1881), descendant d’une longue lignée de commerçants de la ville. Ce dernier après avoir été consul de Norvège au Portugal, reprendra l’entreprise familiale. Par la suite son – 3 – père vendra sa société, Jacob Kielland and Son, ce qui lui permettra de vivre de ses rentes, et mettra Kitty à l’abri du besoin pour le restant de sa vie. Kitty grandit au milieu d’une fratrie de huit en- fants, composée de cinq garçons et de trois filles. Sa famille, d’un milieu aisé, montre un grand in- térêt pour l’art, la musique et la littérature. D’ailleurs, l’un de ses frères cadets, Alexander Kielland (1849-1906), deviendra l’un des plus grands auteurs de la littérature norvégienne. Kitty entretiendra avec lui des liens très proches. Kitty n’a que dix-neuf ans, en 1862, quand sa mère décède prématurément. -

The Flowers and Bones of Georgia O’Keeffe examines mystical philosophies prevalent during O’Keeffe’s development as an artist and their influence on her. The influence of mysticism is sought through the examination of selected flower and bone paintings by the modernist artist. I have viewed selected works through an ethnobotanical and anthropological lens, seeking depth and meaning in the artist’s work beyond the current interpretations which focus on gender, sexuality, and feminism. Through the prism of lotus, jimson flower, poppy, and sand dollar cactus, I have explored their importance to O’Keeffe, as well as the context of these plants in Eastern, Western, and Native American cultures in which she was interested. Ethnobotanical sources and intercultural seminars at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, were included in my research. In addition, a selection of tree portraits, representations of mystical writers the artist admired, are included. These portraits include The Lawrence Tree (D. -

Art Appreciation Lecture Series 2017 Site Specific: The power of place Georgia O’Keeffe and New Mexico Denise Mimmocchi 31 May – 1 June 2017 Lecture summary: The name Georgia O’Keeffe has become inextricably linked with the landscapes of New Mexico in America’s Southwest. But it was not until 1929, by which time O’Keeffe was well established as a successful New York artist, that she initiated her regular visits to the region. She eventually permanently relocated to New Mexico in 1949. Working in New Mexico prompted the invention of new forms in O’Keeffe’s art that contributed to a unique visual vocabulary of the region as well as of the modern America. This lecture examines the extraordinary body of work that O’Keeffe produced from New Mexico and how her experience of living in the region transformed both her practice and her artistic persona. Lewis Throughout her career, American composer Libby Larsen has drawn on a wide variety of extramusical influences in both her texted and non-texted compositions. This thesis focuses on the manner in which Larsen has incorporated these extramusical influences into selected chamber works with viola. It traces the progression from representational and programmatic works written at the beginning of Larsen's career through a middle period of "suggestive" compositions (roughly coinciding with an important residency with the Minnesota Orchestra in the mid 1980's), to abstract compositions written in recent years. -

Her career spanned more than seven decades and this exhibition encompasses her most productive years, from the 1910s to the 1960s. It aims to dispel the clichés that persist about O’Keeffe’s painting, emphasising instead the pioneering nature and breadth of her career. O’Keeffe was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, the daughter of Irish and Dutch-Hungarian immigrants, and died in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the age of 98. She decided to be an artist before she was 12 years old. She was the most prominent female artist in the avant-garde circle around the photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz (1864–1946), later O’Keeffe’s husband. The first showing of her work was at Stieglitz’s New York gallery ‘291’ in 1916, now 100 years ago. Tate Modern’s exhibition therefore marks a century of O’Keeffe. 2 THE EARLY YEARS AND ‘291’ ‘I have things in my head that are not like what anyone has taught me – shapes and ideas so near to me … I decided to start anew – to strip away what I had been taught… I began with charcoal and paper and decided not to use any other colour until it was impossible to do what I wanted to do in black and white.’ O’Keeffe’s earliest mature works were abstractions in charcoal, made while she was working as an art teacher in Virginia and Texas.
