Some observers expected that the Iranian nuclear deal in 2015 would enhance rapprochement between Cairo and Tehran, but so far, no changes have been made, nor do signs indicate a normalization of relations between the two countries.(1) Journal for Iranian Studies 41 Diplomatic ties between Egypt and Iran have been severed since the Iranian revolution in 1979, the Camp David Accords, and process of establishing peace between Egypt and Israel. These relations deteriorated primarily due to Egypt’s hosting of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi– Iran’s former monarch – despite the new Iranian leaders’ demands that Egypt hands him over for trial. In addition, the Iranian leadership adopted a hard line against Cairo by naming one of Tehran’s main streets after Khalid Islambouli, who assassinated President Sadat in 1981 – and hosting a number of Egyptian Islamic groups that escaped trial in Egypt and took refuge in Iran.(2) Iran’s practices also included inciting the Egyptian people against their regime and even hosting terrorist groups that, until recently, the Iranian media called Muslim Rebels.(3) Egypt and Iran are two key powers in the region. -

The city and with their daily lives, I highlighted a malaise in present day-Beirut. One of the main characters of And the Living Is Easy is Firas Beydoun, who was born and lived then in Ouzaï, and whose grandfather, Ali Hassan Nasser, a pioneer, established his life and professional activities there, but also built a mosque, and a local leader (‘za3im’). As I pursued my project Under-Writing Beirut, I got interested in researching the history of Ouzaï, and met several members and acquaintances of the Nasser family. This piece, part of the project’s third chapter: Under-Writing these encounters as well as on the mundane and historic places that are enmeshed with the narratives of this area. REGIONAL PROJECT/PROGRAMME PROPOSAL PART I: PROJECT/PROGRAMME INFORMATION Title of Project/Programme: Increasing the resilience of both displaced persons and host communities to climate change-related water challenges in Jordan and Lebanon Countries: Jordan, Lebanon Thematic Focal Area: Transboundary water management and food security Type of Implementing Entity: Multilateral Implementing Entity: United Nations Human Settlements Programme Executing Entities: Lebanon: Ministry of Environment; Ministry of Energy and Water; Line departments in municipalities; UNICEF and NGO partners Jordan: Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Water and Irrigation;; Line departments in municipalities; UNICEF and NGO partners Amount of Financing Requested: USD 14 million Project Background and Context Introduction to the problems and needs There is little exploration of how urban systems respond to the impacts of climate change combined with a rapid influx of new and often long-term residents. Considering the scale and nature of impacts of climate change and the Syrian crisis in the Mashreq region, a comprehensive and regional response framework is needed, including the identification of effective approaches and best practices.1 The Mashreq region is part of the most water scarce regions in the world and both urban and rural areas face water challenges. However, some urban areas, especially in Lebanon and Jordan, experience extreme pressure on water availability, both in quanitity and quality, exacerbated by both climate change and the unprecedented influx of Displaced Persons (DPs), especially from Syria.2 The aim of this project is to support the development of a comprehensive regional response framework, especially in an urban context. This is done by identifying effective approaches and best practices to build urban resilience, focused on actions that address water challenges that benefit both DPs and host communities, and especially women and youth. -

First deadline to evict was on April 1, 2018 then April 10, 2018. MoSA was following up on the case and identified a new spot located in Barr Elias Dalhamiyet: The site is composed of 28 tents including 7 tents built recently. The tenants of the 7 tents (40 individuals – 10 HHs) received on March 21, 2018 a verbal eviction notice from the LAF intelligence. Focal point and landlord submitted the needed request to the Governor office as requested by MoSA – Landlord and shawish reported that they didn’t received any feedback from the Governor office. -

The author would like to thank Sami Atallah, Daniel Garrote Sanchez, and Micheline Tobia for their contribution to this report. 2 LCPS Report Executive Summary In the Lebanese parliamentary elections of 2018, the district of Zahle saw a highly competitive race, with candidates from three electoral lists making it to parliament. Each party had its own constituents, with Hezbollah owing its support to the Shia community, the Future Movement to the Sunni community, and the Free Patriotic Movement and the Lebanese Forces to Christian communities.
