Number 8 Summer 2016 Hoorah! Summer is on the way and there’s a vibrant programme of films, activities and events to keep you entertained. Event highlights this season include the RSC’s Hamlet via satellite with a brilliant performance from Paapa Essiedu in the title role, Pershore Operatic and Dramatic Society’s dazzling production of the Cole Porter classic Anything Goes and Chandos Symphony Orchestra performing at Ciné Concert: The Battle of the Somme. There’s a great selection of films to come with The Jungle Book (PG), the inspiring Florence Foster Jenkins (PG), Jane Austen adaptation Love & Friendship (U) and the moving Son of Saul (15). Plus there’s the opportunity to raise your voice and join in at the Calamity Jane Sing- a-Long (PG). Come along and join us to celebrate the start of the summer holidays at our screening of Disney’s Zootropolis with tickets just £2. Emma Bangham Programme Manager EVENTS Krazy Kat Theatre Company presents The Very Magic Flute Meet a lost Prince chased by a dragon, a mysterious Queen of the Night, a kidnapped Princess, a lonely Bird-Man, and don’t forget the magic flute and bells. Sounds like a recipe for a new Krazy Kat extravaganza, yet who can you trust, as things are seldom what they seem… Multi award-winning Artistic Director Kinny Gardner creates a whole new take on Mozart’s classic, with beautiful puppets, magical transformations, and fully integrated sign language. Showcasing Krazy Kat’s mastery of visual storytelling, and bristling with creativity and humour, this is an imaginative theatre show with big laughs! Suitable for ages 3-7 years and their families, and for both deaf and hearing audiences. Wednesday 1 June - 2.30pm Tickets: £7.50, 16 & under £6 50mins Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man Recorded at Sadler Wells Theatre, London in 2015 A sensational new ballet from the internationally acclaimed choreographer Matthew Bourne, The Car Man is loosely based on Bizet’s popular opera (Carmen) and has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in classical music, brilliantly arranged by Terry Davies. The familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage-diner in 60s America where the dreams and passions of a small town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into a spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. Brilliant design, lighting and Bourne’s vivid storytelling combine to create a powerful vision of small-town America. Struggling to understand his place in a new world order he faces a stark choice: submit, or rage against the injustice of his new reality. Simon Godwin (The Two Gentlemen of Verona) directs Paapa Essiedu as Hamlet in this RSC production of Shakespeare’s searing tragedy. G. Wodehouse & Guy Bolton PODS bring you Cole Porter's classic farce. The story revolves around romances, mistaken identities and celebrity chasing aboard the S.S. American on its voyage from New York to London. It is a funny, fast and furious feel-good show with glorious songs including, I Get a Kick out of You, You're the Top, Friendship, Easy to Love and the title song Anything Goes. PODS was founded in 1989 and is now in its 27th year of entertaining audiences with professional quality musical shows. Their latest production promises to be yet another roaring success! New book by Timothy Crouse, John Weidman, Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Originally produced by Lincoln Centre Theatre, New York. Leonardo Da Vinci: The Genius in Milan explores his work as never seen before, telling the story of the artist’s world and the treasures he left us. In this enthralling recording Pietro Marani, the curator of the exhibition, and some of the world’s leading experts on Leonardo tell a story that opens up new perspectives and reveals extraordinary facts about Leonardo Da Vinci the painter, sculptor, scientist, anatomist, botanist and architect. Thursday 23 June - 7.00pm Tickets: £12, Students £10, 16 & under £10 1hr 30mins Rotary Club of Pershore presents Golden Jubilee Concert An evening of classical chamber music with soloists from the English Symphony Orchestra to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Pershore. The programme will include works by Elgar, Debussy, Korngold and Gershwin performed by four outstanding musicians: Catherine Handley - flute, Hugh Webb - harp, Corinne Frost - cello and Stephen Warner - double bass and classical guitar. Join us prior to the concert for sparkling wine and canapes. This event is a Private Hire organised by Rotary Club of Pershore. All profits from the event will be donated to Acorns Children’s Hospice. Saturday 25 June - 7.30pm Tickets: £15 2hrs (inc interval) National Theatre Live: The Audience (Encore) Winner of three Tony Awards® and two Olivier Awards, the National Theatre Live’s smash-hit broadcast of The Audience - featuring Helen Mirren in her award-winning performance as Queen Elizabeth II - returns in celebration of the monarch’s 90th birthday. For sixty years, The Queen has met with each of her Prime Ministers in a private weekly meeting, known as The Audience. From the old warrior Winston Churchill, to the Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and David Cameron, The Queen advises on matters both public and personal. Through these private audiences we see glimpses of the woman behind the crown and witness the moments that shaped a monarch. This encore screening includes an exclusive Q&A with Helen Mirren and director Stephen Daldry. Antonio Paolucci, director of the Vatican Museums, Paolo Portoghesi, internationally renowned architect, Claudio Strinati, celebrated art historian, and Micol Forti, director of the Vatican Museums Collection of Contemporary Art, guide us through the story of the basilicas, their evolution over the centuries and their most famous works of art. Monday 4 July - 7.00pm Tickets: £12, Friends £11, Students £10 1hr 30mins Branagh Theatre Live: Romeo & Juliet Live from the Garrick Theatre, London The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live cinema season continues with a new vision of Shakespeare’s heartbreaking tale of forbidden love. Branagh and his creative team present a modern and passionate version of the classic tragedy. A longstanding feud between Verona’s Montague and Capulet families brings about devastating consequences for two young lovers caught in the conflict. Reuniting the stars of his celebrated film of Cinderella, Kenneth Branagh directs Richard Madden and Lily James as Romeo and Juliet and Sir Derek Jacobi as Mercutio. They will be joined by Meera Syal as the Nurse. Thursday 7 July - 7.00pm Tickets: £15 2hrs 50mins Ciné Concert: The Battle of the Somme Conductor Michael Lloyd Chandos Symphony Orchestra The silent film The Battle of the Somme is a moving cinema documentary made in 1916, and seen in that year by around 20 million people. The film has now been restored and to mark this milestone the Imperial War Museum has commissioned a new work by Laura Rossi to accompany it. Chandos Symphony Orchestra has been chosen to give one of only 100 performances around the UK to mark the film’s 100th anniversary. Join us and guest VIPs for a screening of this remarkable film with live accompaniment from Chandos performing Rossi’s evocative score. This event is a Private Hire organised by Chandos Symphony Orchestra. Proceeds will support the Pershore and District Royal British Legion. Sunday 17 July - 6.00pm Tickets: £14, 16 & under £7 1hr 20mins, cert PG Almeida Live: Richard III War-torn England is reeling after years of bitter conflict. King Edward is ailing, and as political unrest begins to stir once more, Edward’s brother Richard - vicious in war, despised in peacetime - awaits the opportunity to seize his brother’s crown. The Almeida Theatre makes its live screening debut with an explosive new adaptation of Richard III, directed by Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold with Ralph Fiennes as Shakespeare’s most notorious villain and Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Margaret.
