Dear Ms. Hrynyk,

Thank you so much for taking the time to extend your congratulations upon my election as Leader of Alberta's NDP. I am honoured to have received a strong endorsement from the membership and so many kind words from people like yourself. I am eager to start building an Alberta where everyone benefits from our shared prosperity.

It was my pleasure to speak at your recent counci l meeting this August- I enjoyed the co nversations I had with your members and I look forward to continue working with you. In fact, at that meeting, I spoke with Mary Lynne and she referenced the most recent lega l opinions on Catholic Schools and the Constitution. I would be interested in reviewing that material and would appreciate if it could be forwarded to my office at the Legislature. (And, Mary Lynne- if you sent it already, I apologize for misplacing it-there has been a degree of upheaval in my office, as I'm sure you can guess.)

Thank you again for the support and the speaking opportunity. I am confident that we will be in touch again soon.

Bernard Valcourt Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development 10 Wellington Street Gatineau, Quebec KlA OH4

Dear Mr. Valcourt:

Wetaskiwin Regional Public School believes that it is time for our government to take action on narrowing the inequities that First Nations children are receiving in our province. We expect the Government to support the original intent of Jordan's Principle (a child-first principle) in order to put an end to jurisdictional disputes getting in the way of First Nations children accessing ALL government services on the same terms as other children.

The Minister of Education has stated that one of their priorities is to narrow the academic gap between First Nations and non-First Nations students. A starting place in closing this gap is to focus on the well-being gap. The funding models are flawed and inequitable; services should be funded not by policy or program but by principle! Focus on the child and worry about who is going to pay for it after services are put in place!

We agree with Dr. Cindy Blackstock's statement; "we have to turn the page on Canadian relationships towards First Nations children from one of oppression and discrimination to one of hope and inspiration". Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools is committed to supporting culturally based equity for the First Nations Students in our jurisdiction. We are working together with our First Nations educational authorities as well as with the families in Maskwacis, through our Maskwacis Education Council and our First Nation Liaison workers in our schools, to find ways to improve the academic success of our First Nation students. Our goal is to be responsive to what we are hearing from our students and families. We recognize that a child's well-being is central to their success in learning. Let us work to ensure that

regardless of where they live, services can be put in place as soon as possible so students can succeed in school and life.

Through these conversations with our partners, we have found that First Nations children are not provided with the same services as other Canadians. No matter where students live in our country, they are entitled to quality education, health, recreation, culture and language; a quality life in safe and caring environments.

We ask you to provide Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools, as well as other School Boards across the province with a report on where we are on "Jordan's Principle" and urge you to return to and implement the original intent of Jordan's Principle-putting the child first!

I look forward to your reply. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. My number is 780-361-6735.
