BLUE JAY BULLETIN JUNE, 2015 N 5 From the Board of Directors Penny Gilray President

reetings All At the Board meeting in April, the revised Rules and Regulations were Gapproved. The main changes include – 1. Golf carts must use headlights when driving at night 2. Carports are not to be used as storage areas The complete update was either hand delivered or mailed to your address on file. Please take a few minutes and review the changes. These Rules and Regulations are for the benefit of all of us in the community. If you are a snowbird, please ensure you bring them back with you. They form a part of the Blue Book. A reminder that the pool decking will be resealed the first week of June, weather permitting. This will mean the pool will be closed for 2 days while this work is done. It is part of the ongoing maintenance to extend the life of the decking before we have to replace it. Your cooperation is appreciated. While we are talking pools, there have been several instances where people have brought glass into the pool area. Glass is not allowed in the pool area. This is a County regulation. If you have visitors, please make sure they are aware of the rules of our community. Some folks are installing bird feeders for their feathered friends. This also attracts the not-so- feathered critters who love to feast on the seed and leftovers. If you own a golf cart, please be sure to respect the rules of the road – stop at the stop signs, especially at the entrance to the park, drive on the correct side of the road and make sure your lights are on after dark. Thanks to Ron and Nancy Beardsley who have been tending the front entranceway and the “rock” to make it look appealing. Also, thanks to Mary Jo Offutt who has been tending the gardens within the pool area. We sure do appreciate your hard work!! The weed problem we have been having in the grassed areas was addressed. It takes 2-3 weeks for the weeds to die once they have been sprayed. They were sprayed in early May and James from Tri-S will be around in late May, early June to inspect and assess the results. We are fast approaching summer and I hope everyone in Blue Jay has a plan for bad weather. Later in June, we will send everyone that is still in residence information on where the shelters are if there is a weather emergency. Just a reminder, the clubhouse cannot be used as a storm shelter. And with that I will remind you that we continue to have an operations meeting every Monday morning at 8:30am. I attend via telephone. Residents are welcome to attend. I can be reached at [email protected] or 905-430-3132. Stay safe and enjoy the summer!! !

8 BLUE JAY BULLETIN JUNE, 2015 N From the Social Club Paulette Derr, Chairperson

arch was another busy month at Blue Jay with the usual activities and Social Hours on Friday afternoons, the St. Patrick’s Dance March 14, the Golf Tournament on MThursday, March 19 and the Personal Rummage Sale on Saturday, March 21. We also had a St. Pat’s “sock contest” during the March 11 meeting and that was won by Joe Montione who received a “pot” ( a tiny toilet) filled with gold nuggets.

The St. Pat’s Dance was hosted by Rich and Cindy Williams and Mike McKenna with some assistance by Jackie Triplett and a lot of volunteers. It was another great dance with people dancing to the music of Ron and the Classics who seem to be one of the favorites in the park. Once again, the clubhouse was decorated with many St. Pat decorations.

The Social Club thanks John Broderick for once again hosting the Golf outing. The guys always seem to enjoy this day and their wives also enjoy meeting them and having appetizers and drinks out on our beautiful deck overlooking the pond.

Everything for the Personal Rummage Sale was set up Thursday night so the residents had a chance to shop on Friday before all the “treasures” were bought up. Saturday was the official sale day and it was a successful sale with Gael Dorsey and helpers once again manning the kitchen to serve the ever popular chili dogs.

April was equally busy with an Easter Breakfast, the Spring Fling and the Annual Picnic. The breakfast was hosted by Ben Skinner and June Modzeleski and as usual, they and their helpers did a great job serving scrambled eggs, sausage, home fries, biscuits, buns, orange juice and a favorite – mimosas and of course, coffee.

The Spring Fling was hosted by Sally Ericson with Mike and Pat McKenna. That was also a big success with music by 2 Dog Night and delicious finger sandwiches and cheese cakes were served. The hall was beautifully decorated with colored streamers along the ceiling, forming what looked like a May pole which really looked like Spring. Unfortunately, a lot of people were ill with colds, pneumonia and whatever else was traveling through the park so a lot did not make the dance. We did get to meet the NEW residents of Blue Jay that were able to be there and were introduced by Isabel Lane.

The Annual Picnic was held Saturday, April 18 on the deck at the clubhouse and music was provided by DennisWagner. The Social Club sponsored this event and so many people helped Continued on page 11

Red Hat Mamas Paulette Derr, Queen Mother

hursday, April 19, 2015, twenty four of our ladies went down to Georgia Boy, a restaurant on Missouri in Clearwater where yours Ttruly was the hostess. Their menu offered a large variety of meals, from breakfast to dinner so we could order whatever we desired and everyone seemed to enjoy the meal of their choice. The owner was kind enough to give us two $5.00 gift certificates which we raffled off along with our usual 50/50. The winner of the 50/50 was Annette Neglia (first time she ever won) and Elaine Braga and Ida Morris won the gift certificates. After lunch about ten of us stopped at DD’s for coffee, some ice cream and a bit of chit chat.

Hope you signed up for the next luncheon scheduled for Thursday, May 21 and hosted by Fran Ternsten. Unfortunately, I will not be there due to knee surgery which has been long overdue. To all you gals heading north for the summer, have a safe journey, a good healthy summer and we’ll see you in the fall.

June Soup & Sandwich Luncheon

Also, check out some of the activities which are offered thru-out the year, at the Palm Harbor Senior/ Activities Center, and the Dunedin Senior Center. R.O.M.E.O.'S

true story by Mike McKenna, Lot#136 I'm a R.O.M.E.O.. "Retired Old Man Eating Out." It is the last Friday of the month Aand today a band of us old guys are anxiously looking forward to our monthly "Men Only" outing. We get up, gear up and show up. We wear our old colorful "Old Men Rule" and "Wing House" tee shirts and caps and crowd into SUV's and take off to our target for lunch. The "Wing House Restaurant". A Hooters knock-off. Three SUV's with eleven brave men leave our Compound, forming a convoy and away we go. Down Curlew Rd. Up Hwy. 19 on a wing and a prayer. Hoot. Hoot. The SUV I am riding in arrives first at the restaurant. So we triumphantly claim that much sought after number one handicap parking space. (Yes, we had a legally handicapped ROMEO driver!) Earning us bragging rights for the afternoon. Our waitress today is "Megan". When the girl saw us coming she must have been the one that got the short straw. She helped us push tables together, patiently took our orders and must have had a sense of humor. She treated us like we were her "Grandpa". We order Wings, variety of spicy hot food and shared big pitchers of cold draft beer. After lunch, she punched our bonus cards, autographed our caps and bid us farewell. It is innocent fun and enjoyable time for all us old coots. A time of bonding. We banter back and forth about the Super Bowl teams, deflated footballs, ground hog's shadow, etc.. Sharing tall tails, lie a little and tell a few jokes. One of our own "ROMEO" gave some of his one lin- ers:----- "Where there is a will. I want in it"------"I wondered why the was getting bigger. Then it me." (Groan) It is over in about an hour. Then it's into our SUV's and back to the Compound and home to our favorite lazy-boy rockers. Ending another example of a typical day here at Blue Jay Estates. Where our simple life moments of "trivia" illuminates our everyday life. Home of the best and the brightest. Where the greatest part of life is to simply enjoy it. Well done men. If that's not true. It ought to be. 12 BLUE JAY BULLETIN JUNE, 2015 N REPLACEMENT WINDOWS Summer is Also Windows For Your Screen Room “NO MORE DIRT” Glass, Acrylic, & Vinyl Here! RHODE ISLAND NATIONAL GUARD MILITARY FAMILY PROGRAMS 541 AIRPORT ROAD WARWICK, RI 02886 Dear Members of Blue Jay Estates, On behalf of the Rhode Island National Guard Military Family Programs, I would like to thank you for your continued support over the years of our deployed troops by sending countless let- ters/cards to the while they are away. As any soldier will tell you, one of the hardest parts about being away is that they are not thought of, sometimes feeling unappreciated. I can assure you that these letters/cards from all of you helps to assure them that they are not forgotten there and gives them the sense that what they are doing does not/has not gone unappreciated. As the State Family Program Director and as a token of our gratitude, I would like to present you with this special commemorative coin as a thank you for continuing to remember our men and women in uniform while they are away from their families and loved ones. Most household ac- cidents are avoidable, though, with some commonsense precautions. Safe Kids World- Twide, a global organization providing safety information aimed at preventing accidents and injuries to children, shares these tips for keeping your family healthy and safe: • Bathroom. Don’t leave children alone in the bath, or anywhere near water. • Hallways. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and check their batteries at least every six months to ensure they’re working properly. • Bedrooms. At bedtime and nap time, remove any blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, and toys from your baby’s crib to prevent accidental suffocation. Make sure your baby sleeps alone and on his or her back. • Staircases. Put up safety gates to keep children from tumbling down staircases. Install similar gates for every window a child might reach. • Medicine chest. Store all medicine in cabinets above the reach of children, and lock cabi- nets they might get into. Keep track of any medication you might carry in your purse or briefcase. • Living room. Install brackets and braces to secure bookshelves and other furniture against accidental tipping. Secure television sets to the wall or place them on low platforms. • Kitchen. Use the back burner of your stove when cooking with children present. Turn pots and pans so that their handles face away from the edge, out of reach from tiny hands. Store household cleaners in high cabinets and shelves, or lock lower cabinets to keep children out.

Keep kids safe from bugs during summer months

As summer comes, so do the bugs. And some of those bugs can bite. Follow these guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics to protect your children from getting stung or bit- ten: • Avoid using scented soaps, hair sprays, and perfumes on your child. The scents can draw insects and bugs and increase your child’s risk of being bitten. • Stay away from nests or places bugs might congregate. This includes stagnant pools of water, areas where uncovered foods are abundant, and gardens where fl owers are bloom- ing. BLUE JAY BULLETIN JUNE, 2015 N 29 Memory Disorders Clinic

The Medical SDaily website suggests trying some of these foods to help stimulate the brain: • Fruit. Fruits have lots of an amino acid called tyrosine, which helps synthesize proteins and may infl uence your ability to think deeply. In one study, students performed better at completing puzzles when they drank orange juice strong with tyrosine. • Chocolate. The fl avanols in chocolate may enhance short-term cognitive skills, according to one British study, because fl avanols boost the amount of oxygen in the brain. Try a cup of hot cocoa before you need to be at the top of your mental game. • Carbohydrates. Carbs deliver a quick dose of glucose to your body and brain, providing aid to concentration and memory. Potatoes, oatmeal, and other carbs may have a benefi - cial effect on brain function. • Walnuts. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, walnuts can help memory and increase brain function, according to the journal Plant Foods for Human Nutrition. The results of one study showed that rats given a diet of raw walnuts for 28 days showed better learning and memory than rodents on another diet.

Money Matters Try these smart shopping tips at the grocery store Everyone wants to stretch his or her food dollars. You don’t have to live on ramen noo- dles and cold cereal three times a day to do it. Here are some tips for savvier shopping at the store: • Don’t fall for fancy displays. Items stacked at the end of the aisles, like sodas, aren’t necessarily on sale. The display can make them seem like they’re marked down, but often they’re still regular price. • Remember that you pay for convenience. Skinless chicken breasts cost more than those packaged with skin. The same applies to the pre-cleaned and cut carrot sticks. In both cases, they’re a little more expensive. Decide whether the convenience is worth the extra money. • Try the store brands. If you compare the contents and nutritional value of name-brand versus no-brand items, you’ll often discover that they’re almost identical. In many cases, they’re made in the same plant and just packaged with the store label. • Use coupons. How often have you clipped coupons only to allow them to expire? De- velop a system that will ensure you remember and use them. BLUE JAY BULLETIN JUNE, 2015 N 33 Blue Jay Estates Irrigation Schedule – Rev. 1
