Unprecedented numbers of men – many without previous experience of the sea, many of them foreign-born – were forced into warships and made to work under the threat of savage violence. Desertion rates reached pre- viously unimaginable levels as men fled ships and navies. The greatest wave of naval mutiny in European history followed in their wake. Hundreds of crews revolted, sometimes paralyzing whole fleets in the midst of the annual fighting season. This article considers the struggles in the French, Dutch, and British navies, concluding that the key development that precipitated the sudden explosion of mutiny was the internationalization of Europe’s lower decks. When the inter-imperial arms race accelerated in the late eighteenth century, European navies entered a three-decade long period of vast expansion. Measured in terms of total displacement, the French navy increased by 107 per cent between 1760 and 1790; the Dutch navy by 98 per cent; the Spanish by 85 per cent; the Danish-Norwegian by 34 per cent; and the British navy by 26 per cent.1 Admiralties ordered both more ships and bigger ships, and then crammed more guns into them. While sans- culottes across Europe laid siege to the nobility and slaves put the torch to plantation islands overseas, out on the oceans naval seamen by the tens of thousands turned their guns on the quarterdeck, formed committees, elected delegates, and overthrew the absolute rule of captains. Never before or since have there been as many mutinies on both sides of the front, as well as among many of the neutral powers, as during the French Revolutionary Wars. This dissertation, based on research in British, Danish, Dutch, French, Swedish, and US archives, traces the development of the mutinous Atlantic from the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789 to its crescendo in 1797. -

It begins with a description of pertinent aspects of maritime culture: specifically, the ubiquitous adoption of false identities by common seamen, officers, and merchants, both in public and in private services. After establishing this context, the project investigates the ways in which individual men had their professed identities, be they true or false, accepted or rejected by other men; and it explains the hierarchies of status which added weight to the claims of some men over others (such as that of officers over that of men from the forecastle). This dissertation also examines American sailors’ relationship with landed society. Although sailors consciously differentiated themselves from “landlubbers” they also shared many of the same concerns, beliefs, and assumptions—such as a conviction that a healthy community was founded on the well ordered sentiments of its members. -

Crisman The aim of this thesis is to determine the identity of a wooden warship from the War of 1812 located at the bottom of a shallow bay near Kingston, Ontario. An archaeological survey of the wreck, designated 'Wreck Baker' was undertaken by the author in 2000. Using the archaeological information gathered in conjunction with historical research at the National Archives of Canada and in secondary sources, Wreck Baker will be identified as Princess Charlotte . On Christmas Day 1814 the frigate HMS Psyche splashed into the ice cold waters of Lake Ontario to take part in a war that had ended one day earlier with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent. -

With the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 upon us, there is no shortage of historical retellings and re-assessments of the war, the belligerents, the battles, the military personalities, both naval and political leaders, and the outcome. The two books reviewed below weigh into this discussion, each claiming victory for a different side. Brian Arthur’s title clearly announces his belief that the British won the War of 1812 as a result of their blockade of the American east coast. George C. Daughan’s title is less obvious, subtly suggesting that it was the American Navy’s war. On the inside flap of the dust jacket, we are informed that the “tiny, battle-tested team of American commanders… played a key role in winning the conflict that cemented America’s newly won independence.” Though both books examine the role of the two navies in the war, they focus on very disparate elements of the naval campaigns.
