1 10 Gwebi College of Agriculture awards and presentations made at each Diploma Day _____________________________________________________________________ DIPLOMA DAY 1951 The first Diploma Day ceremony was held in the College Common Room on Wednesday, 5th December, 1951. The following received Diplomas: M A J BAILEY J M BAINES K N BAGSHAW W A CARTER, with Distinction in Engineering G W FLETCHER P I FLETCHER M J FORD P HOFMEYER I F JACKSON A A de KLERK L G PARKER C P E PILCHER B C REED C C STYLE C H TURNER N T WALLER J S WARD After the presentation of Diplomas, the following received prizes: W A CARTER: The “Farmers’ Weekly” Medal for the best all-round student of the Senior Year and the African Explosives Prize for Farm project and Oral; M J FORD The Lilford Shield for the best practical student in all subjects; N T WALLER The Lilford Medal for Leadership; G J PHILLIPS The Barrett Shield for proficiency in clean milk production; C P E PILCHER The Stewarts & Lloyds Prize for Practical Engineering; J R TATTERSFIELD The Imperial Tobacco Company’s Shield for the best all-round student of the Junior Year, the Fisons Ltd Prize for Basic Science and the William Bain & Co Prize for the runner-up in the Engineering Project; S PENNY The Friesland Cup for cattle judging; A S HOLLAND The William Bain & Co Prize for Engineering Project; www.gwebi.com.au 2 M A J BAILEY The Friesland Cup had been won in the previous year but not awarded. Before these presentations by Mrs Caldicot, the Minister made a speech in which he indicated the possibility of increasing the annual intake of students to thirty-six. The Principal reviewed the year’s progress at Gwebi and outlined the type of instruction given at the College. Mr Lilford, Chairman of the College Council, congratulated the successful students and emphasised that energy and continuity of purpose should be their aim in pursuing a career in agriculture. Lord Acton spoke on the value of constructive criticism, hand planting, irrigation, and on the methods of control of lion. Mr Barrett, M.P., told the successful students that they would never regret the time spent on their course and that old lecture notes are of great value in later years. After the ceremony there was a cup of tea, and many farewells between students and between students and staff. We wish every one of the Foundation Students good rains, good crops. EDYGAR-JONES The Stewarts and Lloyds Prize for Practical Engineering. E. N. PURDON A Lord Acton Prize for Animal Husbandry. Junior Year awards: H. G. FABER The Imperial Tobacco Company Shield for the best all round student of the Junior Year, and the Central African Fertilizers Prize for basic science. M. E. ELLEMENT The Friesland Cup for judging dairy cattle. R. E. WESTROP The William Bain Prize for the best Field Equipment Essay. H. G. FABER The Central African Fertilizers Scholarship for 1952. DIPLOMA DAY 1953 Twenty six students out of the twenty seven that enrolled in Course 3 sat the exams. There were eight graduates. On 29th July, 1953, the following received Diplomas from Course 3: D. MACLACHLAN – The Mundy Cup for the Planning Essay competition; the Brockhouse Prize for runner-up in the Engineering Essay and a Lord Acton Prize for Animal Husbandry. J.D. FULLER – The Acton Trophy for the Genetics Essay competition. K.S. SHERRIFFS – The Romyn Cup for Livestock Judging and a Lord Acton Prize for Animal Husbandry. A.B. ALCOCK – The Johnson Prize for the Engineering Essay and a Lord Acton Prize for Animal Husbandry. The undermentioned First Year students (Course 5) received the following prizes: The Imperial Tobacco Company Shield for the best all-round student of the First Year – A.G. ADE The Central African Fertilizers Scholarship – A.G. ADE The Central African Fertilizers Prize for Basic Science – J.C. BROWNING The Central African Fertilizers Prize for Practical Work – G.J.M. LANGHAM The Friesland Cup for Judging Dairy Cattle – J.W. LOWE Student Association Committee The Second Year members were P.L. Brereton (Chairman), A.O. Alcock and V.O. Meredith whilst the First Year members were P.M. Ellenberger and J.M. Nash. Arthur Rhodes proved an able and enthusiastic Entertainments Secretary, whilst J.W. Levy gave stalwart service in the Library. The College Advisory Council The Council was re-appointed by the Minister for the period February 1954 to February 1956. Its members remain as follows:- Mr. D.C. Lilford (Chairman). The Lord Acton, Major H.G. Mundy CBE, Mr. G.R. Johnson, Mr. H.H. Cole, The Principal (ex officio). DIPLOMA DAY 1955 The Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia, Mr R. S. Garfield Todd, attended the Fifth Diploma Day on 27th July, 1955.
