DIPLOMA DAY 1964

The fourteenth Diploma Day ceremony was held in the Great Hall on the 14th October, 1964, with Sir Albert and Lady Robinson the guests of honour.

The Guests of Honour, Lady and Sir Albert Robinson, had by this Gwebi Graduation ceremony just returned previously from London where Sir Albert had been Rhodesia’s High Commissioner. Sir Albert was born in Durban and had read law at Stellenbosch University, attended the London School of Economics and also Cambridge University before being called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn, London, so obviously no slouch when it came to the academic world. When War was declared he joined the Imperial Light Horse and served in North Africa where he was wounded in action at Alamein in a German air strike. He had obviously been spotted by Harry Oppenheimer as a rising star and on his return to South Africa spent much of his adult working life with Anglo-American or one of their many subsidiaries. Sir Albert also delved into politics and, for a time, was an M.P. in Jan Smuts’ United Party, but due to his perceived liberal outlook for that era, was soundly defeated in the General Elections of 1953. Looking for greener pastures he moved north of the Limpopo to Southern Rhodesia at the start of the Federation but still under the patronage of Harry Oppenheimer. Here he concentrated on the corporate world and, probably still a bit gun shy from his foray into the extreme politics of South Africa, never stood for Parliament in Rhodesia. He was knighted in 1962 by the British Government in recognition of public service of an exceptionally high order to the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

Cricket The league fixture allowed the College to play two seasons. As many games that were won by Gwebi were lost. The Rodney Mundy Memorial Double Wicket was won by the Erwine brothers, Neil and Barry, for the second year in succession. In the final of the Loser’s Plate, Leith Bray and Angus Chisholm of Tengwe beat Tommy Millar and Butch Vaughan-Davies of Ayreshire. Congratulations to Skea, Millar and West on being selected for the Mashonaland Country District Colts and Millar was Captain.

Rugby ‘Jake’ Bremner got the season off to a good start. Generally the season went well and Gwebi lost most matches. A fine time was had on the tour to South Africa which Colin Campion managed and some rugby was played. Fund raising benefitted from the Gwelo to Salisbury relay run.

Hockey Seven gruelling matches were played.

Athletics Michael Hallam and Mark Fraser stood out in their performances.

Squash Captain A Strathearn Secretary C D Croxford No matches were played but social squash was very popular as it was difficult to get a game on the busy court.

Tennis Students played regularly amongst themselves, as did the staff. The contest of three pairs between both remains undecided at 1-1 matches.

Ploughing Disc results were Odendaal, followed by Oosthuysen, Bosman then Mitchell. Mouldboard was Oosthuysen, Odendaal, Rowley then Layton Mitchell. Overall Champion was Odendaal and runner-up was Oosthuysen.
