A Handlist of Church of Ireland Vestry Minute A HANDLIST OF CHURCH OF IRELAND VESTRY MINUTE BOOKS IN THE REPRESENTATIVE CHURCH BODY LIBRARY, DUBLIN Representative Church Body Library September 2021 Introduction The Representative Church Body Library is the library of the Church of Ireland (the Anglican or Protestant Episcopal Church in Ireland) and is, inter alia, the principal repository for the parish records of the Church of Ireland. However, records of parishes in Northern Ireland which are not retained in parish custody may be deposited in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, 66 Balmoral Avenue, Belfast BT9 6NY. The handlist details those vestry minute books which had been transferred to the Library by 30 September 2021. The handlist also contains entries for records of some non-parochial ministries such as chapels of ease and trustee churches which kept minutes of their proceedings. Parish records are available to readers in the Library during the normal opening. A Booking System is in place to view records of interest (See the Church of Ireland website at the link below). The Library staff do not undertake general research on behalf of readers. Further information on the records in this handlist may be had from the understated address Representative Church Body Library Braemor Park, Churchtown, Dublin 14 Telephone (+353 1) 492 3979 E-mail [email protected]. Thank you one and all. WilliamSaundersHallaran 6-8 MarianShrines 8 A significant change in the last year is our new name. The original CorkLadies’Football 9 Northside Folklore Project has now evolved into The Cork Loafers:ReJectionsonCork’sFirstGayBar 10-11 Folklore Project . This better reflects the breath of our collective ImagesofAnimalsandDarkness 12-13 material and focus, and makes it clearer who we are to the online SoundExcerpts 14-15 world. But we have, and will always have, significant collected material about the Northside in our archive. Cork’sMiddleParish 16-17 GaelTaca:Breisis25bliainaranbhFód 18 It was also time for a new logo, which you can see above, TheKino 19 created by Tom Doig, who also contributed the beautiful collage ToYoughalbytheSea 20-21 for this front cover. But just to be clear, we don’t actually have ‘What’syourNameforRadio?’ 22-23 a Folklore plane! One other note — this issue is printed on a BookReviews 24-25 slightly lighter weight paper, to make necessary savings on print cost as well as on postage. • Documents from the Thomond Papers at Petworth House Archive1 [With Index]
Luke McInerney Documents from the Thomond Papers at Petworth House Archive1 [with index] The Petworth House Archive (PHA) is an important and under-exploited repository for research into seventeenth and eighteenth-century Co. Clare. Petworth House, the historic seat of the earls of Egremont, holds primary source material relating to the estates of the earls of Thomond in North Munster, chiefly for Co. Clare but also Co. Limerick and Co. Tipperary. The material preserved at Petworth contains a range of material includ- ing estate management documentation, correspondence, accounts, legal papers, military, parliamentary papers, family history, maps and surveys.2 Only a small proportion of the tens of thousands of documents in the archive relate to the earls of Thomond’s Irish estates and the surviving ‘Thomond papers’ probably represent only a fraction of the original col- lection, loss and damage having taken its toll. Not all of the Thomond material is listed in the current Petworth catalogue; a large portion of the material is still available only in an unpublished early nineteenth-century manuscript catalogue. For historians of Gaelic Ireland the Thomond papers are notewor- thy as they contain detail on landholding at different social levels; key legal instruments such as inquisitions post mortem of Connor O’Brien (1581) third earl of Thomond, and Donough O’Brien (1624) fourth earl of Thomond, are preserved in the archive, along with petitions and leases of Gaelic freeholders. Freeholders of sept-lineages petitioned for restoration of their lands as they were increasingly disenfranchised in the new land- holding matrix of seventeenth century Co.
