A manga with a dramatic new approach to wine. The wine world wept when Yutaka Kanzaki, world- renowned wine expert, died. He had stocked one of the most extraordinary wine cellars ever. Shizuku Kanzaki, the master’s son, is defi nitely no wine expert, as opposed to his dark brother, Issei Tomine, brilliant wine critic and adopted son. Which brother is to inherit Yutaka Kanzaki’s wines? His last will and testament is clear: the brother who solves the 12 riddles of the 12 wines, known as “the twelve apostles”, and discovers the mysterious thirteenth wine, that no one has ever heard of, and which the master calls “Les Gouttes de Dieu”, is the one who will inherit his cellar. The brothers’ clash allows readers to truly discover the world of wine, its jargon, quirks and traditions. Les Gouttes de Dieu is an engaging book aimed at the wider public that will enthrall not only manga fans but wine and thriller fans as well. A worldwide hit that has sold more than six million copies and had 16 volumes translated into French. The scenario is by Tadashi AGI, master of the detective novel, and the artwork by Shu OKIMOTO, an inspired illustrator with a mature and elegant sense of line. The whole series of Les Gouttes de Dieu is available at Renaud-Bray as well as at good bookstores everywhere. KAMI NO SHIZUKU © 2005 Tadashi Agi and Shu Okimoto / Kodansha Ltd.

  • Colportage, the Vanguard of Evangelism
    H. M. S. RICHARDS N NOVEMBER, 1746, John Wesley for the first time published a vol I ume of sermons. The preface states that the sermons contain the sub stance of what Wesley had been preaching for the last eight years, and then he adds: "For I now write, as I generally speak ad popullum: to the bulk of mankind. ... I design plain truth for plain people: therefore, of set purpose, I abstain from all nice and philosophical speculations; from all perplexed and intricate reasonings; and, as far as possible, from even the showing of learning, unless in something citing the original Scripture. I have thought, I am a creature of a day. ... I am a spirit come from God, and returning to God. ... I want to know one thing, the way to heaven. God himself has condescended to teach me the way. He hath written it down in a book! Oh give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me." Should not this paragraph stir our hearts? Is it not good advice to us today? What a rebuke this is to fundamental error the age-long error that mere culture, logic, science, philosophy, psychology, or any other human accomplishment can win souls to God or do the work of God. As we read in Ministry of Healing, pages 214, 215: "The experience of the apostle Paul in meeting the philosophers of Athens has a lesson for us. In presenting the gospel before the court of the Areopagus, Paul met logic with logic, science with science, philosophy with philosophy.

  • A Modern Woman's Journey. Miyamoto Yuriko in the Soviet Union and Europe 1927–1930
Self and the City: A Modern Woman's Journey. Miyamoto Yuriko in the Soviet Union and Europe 1927–1930 Jill Dobson Submitted for the degree of PhD School of East Asian Studies The University of Sheffield August 2014 Abstract As the daughter of liberal-minded and affluent parents, the writer Miyamoto Yuriko (1899–1951) had unusual freedom for a young Japanese woman in defining herself. Her pivotal three years in Soviet Russia and Europe in 1927–1930 brought about her conversion to communism in the Stalinist era and changed the course of her life. The fundamental question of this thesis is how travel can transform an individual’s sense of self. I address this by using the concept of positionality to analyse how Miyamoto Yuriko presented her experience of travel across several genres of self- writing. Drawing on Chloe Starr’s (2013) approach to different genres of self-writing as individual components of an overarching narrative, I take as my source material Yuriko’s various accounts of her three years abroad: the autobiographical novel Dōhyō (Roadsigns) (1947–1950), two key essays from her Sobieto kikō, ‘Mosukuwa inshōki’ (Record of Moscow Impressions, 1928) and ‘London 1929’ (1930), and Yuriko’s diaries from this period. By reading these accounts, written at different times in different genres, against and through each other, I will analyse the variations and commonalities to produce a more detailed and nuanced picture of the relationship between Yuriko’s travels and her self-conception. In my analysis of travel as a transformational experience, I draw on cultural geography to explore the interaction of place and self, in particular, the city.

Oregon State University Press, Corvallis OR, 2011, 182 pp., ISBN 978-0-87071-605-8, $18.95. Voodoo Vintners presents the history and farming techniques of a group of biodynamic viniculturists and winemakers in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, in America’s Pacific Northwest. The region is considered excellent for Pinot Noir. Biodynamics is an occasionally ridiculed organic farming method based on the ideas © American Association of Wine Economists, 2013 250 Book and Film Reviews of Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925), the Austrian philosopher, mystic, and founder of anthroposophy. “Voodoo” refers to the method’s occult origin. As biodynamics has gained popularity with winegrowers, it has entered the awareness of consumers keen on organic food and wine, alternative lifestyles, and holism. It surprises me that this awareness extends to wine drinkers who just twist and pour. Nevertheless, Voodoo Vintners aims to be “a simple, readable, enjoyable book on biodynamic viticulture for the everyday wine lover to flip through and enjoy” (ix).
