Robinson1*, Halina Cernohorska2, Svatava Kubickova2, Miluse Vozdova2, Petra Musilova2 & Aurora Ruiz‑Herrera3,4 Chromosome structural change has long been considered important in the evolution of post‑zygotic reproductive isolation. The premise that karyotypic variation can serve as a possible barrier to gene fow is founded on the expectation that heterozygotes for structurally distinct chromosomal forms would be partially sterile (negatively heterotic) or show reduced recombination. We report the outcome of a detailed comparative molecular cytogenetic study of three antelope species, genus Raphicerus, that have undergone a rapid radiation. The species are largely conserved with respect to their euchromatic regions but the X chromosomes, in marked contrast, show distinct patterns of heterochromatic amplifcation and localization of repeats that have occurred independently in each lineage. We argue a novel hypothesis that postulates that the expansion of heterochromatic blocks in the homogametic sex can, with certain conditions, contribute to post‑ zygotic isolation. i.e., female hybrid incompatibility, the converse of Haldane’s rule. This is based on the expectation that hybrids incur a selective disadvantage due to impaired meiosis resulting from the meiotic checkpoint network’s surveillance of the asymmetric expansions of heterochromatic blocks in the homogametic sex. Asynapsis of these heterochromatic regions would result in meiotic silencing of unsynapsed chromatin and, if this persists, germline apoptosis and female infertility. Te chromosomal speciation theory 1,2 also referred to as the “Hybrid dysfunction model”3, has been one of the most intriguing questions in biology for decades. -

He also pro- posed that, to bring objectivity into the system, each taxonomic rank should be characterised by a particular time depth, but this is not easy to bring about: genera such as Drosophila and Eucalyptus have a time-depth comparable to whole orders among mammals! Within restricted groups of organisms, however, time-depths do tend to vary within limits: we will not do too much violence to current usage if we insist that a modern mammal (including ruminant) genus must have a time-depth of about 5 million years, i.e. going back at least to the Miocene-Pliocene boundary, and a modern family must have a time-depth of about 25 million years, i.e. going back to the Oligocene- Miocene boundary. Molecular studies show that living ruminants present examples where the „traditional“ classification (in the main laid down in the mid- 20th-century, and all too often still accepted as standard even today) violates Hennigian principles. -

The Koobi Fora and Olorgesailie Basins are renowned Hominin sites in the Rift Valley of northern and central Kenya, respectively with fluvial, lacustrine and tuffaceous sediments spanning the Pleistocene and Holocene. Much research has been done on the fossil fauna, hominins and flora with the aim of trying to understand when and how the hominins evolved, and how the environment impacted on their behaviour, land-use and distribution over time. One of the most important factors in trying to understand the hominin-environment relationship is firstly to reconstruct the environment. Important environmental factors are the climate, rate or degree of climate change, vegetation structure and resources, floral and faunal resources. Vegetation structure/composition is a key component of the environments and, it has been hypothesized the openness and/or closeness of vegetation structure played a key role in shaping the evolutionary history not only of man but also other mammals. -

The Lightning Field Walter De Maria Catron County, NM, USA On a high desert plain in western New Mexico, Walter De Maria (b.1935) had 400 stainless-steel poles installed as lightning rods. Each of the polished metal poles is spaced about 67 m (220 ft) apart, and together the 16 rows of 25 poles form a grid measuring 1.6 × 1 km (1 × 0.62 miles). The poles are all 5 cm (2 in ) in diameter but they vary in height from 4.5 to 7.9 m (14.8 to 25.9 ft) and are installed into the earth at varying depths so that their tips form a level plane regardless of the fluctuations in height of the uneven desert ground below. However, the art of this work is not to be found in the form of the grid, but in its interaction with the forces of nature. The Dia Art Foundation, who originally commissioned the work, continues to maintain the site and provide transport and overnight accommodation for visitors with advance reservations. During the visiting season, which runs from May until the end of October, up to six people at a time can stay for one night in a wooden cabin at the site. One can never predict when lightning will strike, but when a storm does occur it is an awesome phenomenon to behold. Striking the terrain not far from the viewers’ cabin, the lightning bolts provide a sublime, fearsome and breathtaking experience. When a lightning storm is not raging, the site still provides visitors with a beautiful and contemplative experience. -

ABSTRACT The field of conservation genetics, in combination with non-invasive sampling, provides a powerful set of tools for investigating the conservation status and natural history of rare species that are otherwise difficult to study. A systematic literature review demonstrated that this is certainly the case for many forest- associated antelope species, which are poorly studied and yet constitute some of the most heavily hunted wildlife in Africa. The aim of the present study was to use non-invasive sampling to investigate genetic patterns in forest antelope populations in the high-biodiversity Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania, within the context of the conservation of these species and the wider ecosystem. Genetic information was derived from faecal samples collected across the Udzungwa landscape and assigned to five antelope species (N = 618, collected 2006-09). Faecal pellet length was measured for a subset of samples but statistical assignment to species by this method proved unreliable. -

A NOTE ON THE TAPHONOMY OF LOWER MIOCENE FOSSIL LAND MAMMALS FROM THE MARINE CALVERT FORMATION AT THE POLLACK FARM SITE, DELAWARE1 Alan H. Cutler2 ABSTRACT The lower shell bed (marine) of the portion of the Cheswold sands of the lower Calvert Formation exposed at the Pollack Farm Site (now covered) near Cheswold, Delaware, is unusually rich in the remains of land mammals. Two models could pos- sibly explain the occurrence of terrestrial fossils within marine sediments: (1) post-mortem rafting of animal carcasses during floods, and (2) reworking of terrigenous bones following a marine transgression. Observations of the surface features of the mammalian bones suggest that the bones were exposed subaerially for a period of time before burial and that they were buried and permineralized prior to transport and abrasion. Carcass rafting is therefore unlikely, and reworking is the favored model of assemblage formation. Concentrations of fossil and subfossil land mammal bones in Georgia estuaries and on the Atlantic continental shelf provide possible analogs.
