Despite crippling poverty of about a quarter of its population, there has been a general improvement in the quality of life over that last four decades. However, India accounts for more than 13 per cent of global HIV infections. In absolute numbers (5.21 million), India continues to stand next to South Africa. The HIV infection is spreading rapidly and unevenly. Just six states accounting for 80 percent of the estimated cases: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Manipur, Nagaland and Tamil Nadu.
