PUBLIC HEALTH CODE (EXCERPT) Act 368 of 1978 333.17957 Massage therapy; license required; exceptions. Sec. 17957. (1) An individual shall not engage in the practice of massage therapy unless licensed under this part. The practices for which a license is not required under this subsection include, but are not limited to, all of the following: (a) The use of touch, words, or directed movement to deepen awareness of patterns of movement in the body as long as those services are not designated or implied to be massage or massage therapy. These practices include, but are not limited to, all of the following: (i) The Feldenkrais method. (ii) The Trager approach. (b) The affectation of the human energy system or acupoints or qi meridians of the human body while engaged within the scope of practice of a profession with established standards and ethics and as long as those services are not designated or implied to be massage or massage therapy. These practices include, but are not limited to, all of the following: (i) Polarity or polarity therapy. (ii) Asian bodywork therapy. (iii) Reiki. (iv) Shiatsu. (c) Reflexology. (d) Structural integration. (2) The department shall provide for a 3-year license cycle. (3) Subsection (1) does not prevent any of the following: (a) An individual licensed under any other part or act from performing activities that are considered massage therapy services if those activities are within the individual's scope of practice and if the individual does not use the titles, words, or initials protected under section 17953. (b) The practice of massage therapy that is an integral part of a program of study by students enrolled in a school, provided that they are identified as students and provide massage therapy services only while under the supervision of a licensed massage therapist. (c) Self-care by a patient or uncompensated care by a friend or family member who does not represent or hold himself or herself out to be a licensed massage therapist. According to acupuncture theory, these acupuncture points lie along meridians along which qi, a kind of vital energy, is said to flow. There is no generally-accepted anatomical or histological basis for these concepts, and modern acupuncturists tend to view them in functional rather than structural terms, (as a useful metaphor in guiding evaluation and care of patients). Acupuncture is thought to have originated in China and is most commonly associated with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Different types of acupuncture (Classical Chinese, Japanese acupuncture) are practiced and taught throughout the world. Bowen Technique The Bowen Technique is one version of a group of technical interpretations of the work of Australian osteopath Tom Bowen (1916–1982) known as Bowen Therapy, which is a holistic system of healing.

Rosen Method Bodywork (RMB) is a complementary approach with a small, but growing body of evidence. The purpose of this research study was to explore the processes of Rosen Method Bodywork to develop a theoretical framework about what occurs over the course of receiving sessions RMB, both within the recipient and between the recipient and the practitioner. In this grounded theory study, data from interviews of twenty participants was analyzed and a theoretical model of the overall process of RMB was constructed. The model consists of the five integrative phases through which these participants moved within the iterative RMB process from Feeling Stuck and Disconnected to Feeling Connected. Mindfulness is observed to be a central component of the RMB process which participants describe as helpful for trauma recovery.

7 The Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education Patricia A. Buchanan Des Moines University, USA 1. Introduction The Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education is an integrative approach to learning and improving function among people of varying abilities across the lifespan. With an emphasis on increasing self-awareness through lessons that stimulate sensing, moving, feeling, and thinking, certified practitioners or teachers of the method propose to take advantage of the human capacity to self-organize behavior (Buchanan & Ulrich, 2001; Ginsburg, 2010). People have used the Feldenkrais Method to enhance their function in many aspects of life, including performance at work, in sports, or in the performing arts. However, estimates are that many more have used it to recover from injury, manage pain, reduce stress, or improve other health-related conditions, either as complementary or alternative approaches to traditional Western medicine. Because of this usage, some groups, such as the United States National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine [NCCAM], 2004), view the Feldenkrais Method as a form of complementary and alternative medicine, despite the broader self-identification as a learning method. Method founder Moshe Feldenkrais, DSc, (1904-1984) was cautious about the constraints he perceived would be associated with establishing his method within a medical model and the broadly held allopathic emphasis on disease of his time (Feldenkrais, 2010). Despite medicine’s growing biopsychosocial perspective, identification with it remains controversial today among practitioners. Some recognize the improved access that may be afforded by that association, while others express apprehension, as did Feldenkrais, about the limitations on this learning method that may follow.

Holistic Modalities
HOLISTIC MODALITIES Acupressure Based on the same system as acupuncture, but fingers and hands are used, instead of stimulation with needles, to restore the balanced flow of the body’s life energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). This force moves through the body along 12 energy pathways or meridians, which practitioners unblock and strengthen. Common styles of acupressure include Jin Shin, which gently holds at least two points at once for a minute or more, and Shiatsu, which applies firm pressure to each point for three to five seconds. Acupuncture An ancient Chinese technique that stimulates the body’s ability to sustain and balance itself, based on the theory that an electromagnetic life-force (qi or chi, pronounced “chee” is channeled in a continuous flow throughout the body via a network of meridians. Disease is understood as an imbalance in the meridian system. Diagnosis of an imbalance is made by “reading” the pulse, face, tongue and body energy. To correct it, a practitioner inserts acupuncture needles at specific points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the flow of life-force. Acupuncture principles include the yin and yang polarities and the associations of the five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood with bodily organs. Air Purification: The process of reducing contaminants in the air. Alexander Technique A system of reeducating the body and mind to support and facilitate proper posture and ease of movement. Through gentle manual guidance, accompanied by verbal directions, the Alexander teacher coaches the student to become aware of unnecessary tension and to unlearn longstanding patterns of movement.

Massage Therapy License Exemption Worksheet For Related Touch Therapies The legislature has determined that massage therapy includes any practice (not already licensed by the state) that performs “structured touch, pressure, positioning or holding to soft tissues of the body” -MCA 37- 33-403(4). This means that while practitioners may not consider their work to be massage therapy, the law is broad enough to define those practices as massage therapy and requires the Board of Massage Therapy to regulate these practices through licensure. However, the legislature has also determined that in certain cases these individuals can qualify for an exemption and do not require the Board’s oversight. This worksheet is intended to determine whether the individual qualifies for an exemption under MCA 37-33- 404(5). Begin with the questions below to determine if you may use this worksheet. 1. Do you perform touch, words, and directed movement to deepen awareness of Yes / No existing patterns of movement in the body, as well as to suggest new possibilities of movement? The Board of Registration of Massage Therapy as established by M.G.L. c. 13, § 98. Division. The Division of Professional Licensure. Licensed Massage School.
