JOE TRIPODI was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy and was barely into his teens when he began to play organized minor soccer. At 17 he joined a Junior team affiliated with a third division professional club in Genoa and a year later, in 1950, he came to Canada and settled in North Bay. Soccer was far from a mainstream sport here at the time so Joe and some friends got together for informal games on whatever open space was available. A men's house league was formed in 1962 and some “friendlies" were played with teams in the Sudbury area. A soccer field was developed adjacent to Scollard Hall and the sport began to grow. Tripodi helped organize the Azzura soccer club that played locally and in the Sudbury league. The team was later known as Garland Azzuras and then Davedi Garlands. He played in the senior league from 1952 to 1963 when a back injury ended his active career at 31. Few records were kept at the time but it is generally acknowledged by his peers that Joe Tripodi was a superb soccer player, a dangerous striker who had a penchant for kicking game winning goals. Although unable to play, his love of the game kept him involved and he became a successful coach, leading the Azzuras to North Bay's first Northern Ontario Soccer title. He not only coached and managed for better than a decade he also served on the team management committee until 1981. He was a Director on the North Bay & District Soccer Association for a number of years and served a term as President. He helped found the original local indoor soccer league which operated out of the RCAF gym. Player, coach, administrator and executive -Joe Tripodi served soccer well for many decades.

JIM WATSON was born in Malartic Quebec and was 16 when he first arrived in North Bay in 1959 to attend Algonquin Composite School where he played junior and senior football and hockey. After a brief stint with Hamilton Red Wings of the OHA Junior A circuit (now the OHL ) , he decided to turn pro and for the next 13 seasons played defence for teams in 14 different cities in eight leagues including the and the . On his retirement in 1976 he had played a total of 848 games in the pros, had been assessed 1212 penalty minutes, scored 36 goals and added 143 assists for 179 points. All told he played 253 games in the WHA ( 47 pts,248 PIM), 221 in the NHL( 23 pts, 345 PIM), 145 in the AHL, 130 in the CPHL and 72 in the WHL as well as 27 matches in other leagues. Watson broke into the original six NHL with Detroit in 1963 but spent much of his first six professional seasons in the CPHL,AHL, WHL and CHL although he was with the Wings for the complete 1967-68 campaign. He was claimed by the in the 1970 Expansion Draft and scored the Sabre's first official NHL goal. He spent two productive seasons in Buffalo before he was claimed by the Los Angeles Sharks in the 1972 WHA General Player draft. After a couple of seasons in LA he was traded to WHA in 1974 before being picked up by in the 1975 WHA Dispersal Draft. During his professional career Watson spent many of his summers here in North Bay and on retirement owned and operated several local businesses.
