LIBERTO’s SEEDS AND LIST FALL 2020 (summer dormant bulbs)

Welcome to my general bulb list with summer dormant bulbs, , tubers and rhizomes available this summer and early fall. You’ll find quite an extensive variety here with geophytes coming from the various summer dry areas of the world like , Western USA, the Mediterranean, even Chile and Australia. Bulbs from this list can be ordered until the beginning of September, depending on availability. An exception to the above would be the rainlilies, Zephyranhtes and Habranthus, that are also included in this list and can be shipped until the end ofJuly.

The first and second columns indicate prices per 1 and 3 flowering sized bulbs. Some bulbs are available in younger age and these can be found on the third column. Please note that the bulbs are available only in the category they are listed, or multiples of it.

All prices are in Euros. Items in blue are new to the catalog!

Please scroll to the end of the catalog for some planting and ordering instructions.

I received my bulbs. How to them? If you are living in a Mediterranean climate area, it’s pretty straightforward. Put them in pots and place them outside. I generally use a mixture of 2 parts peat-based compost, 1 part coarse sand or grit and 1 part fine perlite. That provides adequate drainage in my rainy winter climate in Greece, essential for most species. I add perlite at the bottom of the pot for extra drainage and once the bulbs are planted, I top dress with grit or coarse sand in order to keep the leave that come in contact with the surface drier and also to make my life easier with weeding. But you want to have your material free from weed seed in the first place. I don’t worry much about depth, 2 or 3 times the length of the bulb will do it. I like to keep my bulbs in soil, even if they are dormant. This preserves water desiccation, that some species are prone to, when exposed to air for long periods of time. So, if you receive your bulbs early, pot them up and let them in a shady spot until watering begins. Nevertheless, most of the bulbs can stay in their paper packages in a cool dry spot, until potting is done in September. Once mid-September arrives, I water the pots and then let the weather do the rest. If it doesn’t rain in September or later, I water every 5 days or so. Fertilizing lightly every month is advised, especially if you keep your bulbs in the same soil for many years. The need to stay moist during active growing and flowering but once past that, they need to get dry and go dormant. During summer I keep the pots completely dry in a shady spot (to avoid over baking in the sun and the occasional summer storm).

That above oversimplifies the cultivation of summer dormant bulbs. Each species comes from a particular microclimate, with its own specific requirements of soil, sun, nutrition, temperature low and high needs. So wherever you are cultivating those bulbs, try to match their needs as closely as possible. The web is full of information on most of the bulbs in my catalog and moreover you can experiment with them, or as I say carefully watch them as they grow and respond to their needs, especially when it comes to watering, feeding and protecting from low temperatures. As most of what I offer are not your common garden store bulbs and you’re ordering from my list, you’re probably an experienced bulb grower and know what to do.

If your climate allows, plant your bulbs in the garden. In a suitable garden spot, geophytes can thrive and propagate much faster than they would do in pots.

A note for rainlilies: Rainlilies (Zephyranhes and Habranthus) are an exception to the catalog as they are not summer dormant bulbs. In my Mediterranean climate, their main flowering season is late July through October and then growing occurs until the end of winter. In spring the bulbs are let to go dormant. That doesn’t necessarily mean they should be grown like this in your climate as they are semi-tropical bulbs and can stay in leaf almost all year if you water them. But for best flowering results, try to let them dry for a season after which heavy watering (or rain!) will bring them to flower. They require richer soil than other bulbs and protection from freezing temperatures. Rainlily bulbs will be shipped only within the month of July.

Will they flower the first year? Most of what is listed here as flowering sized will flower the year they’re planted. That is if they are grown well and have their needs met. If you’re buying younger bulbs that means they most likely will require a year or more of growing before they come into flower.

Are the plants I have true to name? I try to keep the naming in my collection correct. There will be a case or two where I have been mistaken, that is why the facebook gallery page will help you know in advance what you’re getting. Also, many of the bulbs in the list are propagated by seed and since my collection is quite extensive with many species in the same , there is the rare occasion that a hybrid might be produced. And this could be either exciting or disappointing, depending how you see it.

How to order? That is quite simple. You make a list of what you want and send them to my email [email protected]. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible with availability for your order and then you can send your payment exclusively through PayPal ([email protected]).

You can combine your order of Oxalis bulbs with an order of seeds or other bulbs from my lists. Just bear in mind that I only offer summer dormant Oxalis in July and August, whereas other summer formant bulbs can be shipped as late as October. Ordering early also guarantees the availability of some varieties, especially those sold as individual bulbs as I may have very few of them available.

There is no minimum order but there is a universal shipping fee of 11 euros for tracked service. That cost will cover your bulb order regardless how big it is (the cost actually goes up after the limit of 200gr. of your parcel, but you can see it as a small disount on your order). In case your selections are all bulbs with small, lightweight species and the actual shipping costis less than 11 euros, I will refund the difference through Paypal. Orders to Greece are shipped for 5 euros. Ordering within the EU. If you would like to order outside the EU, you have the responsibility of the parcel going through your country’s customs if it gets stopped.

Orders usually take 5-7 working days to reach destinations within Europe. If you want me to ship your order on a specific date, please let me know in advance. Of course, in a worldwide shipping network, delays and problems could arise, especially in this new covid-era. Please cooperate and let me know if there is any problem with your order and I will do my best to solve it.
