February 2009 The 2008 Report on the Health of Colorado’s Forests focuses on our high country forests and the insects and diseases that threaten them. It also takes a look at the connection between humans and these forests, which provide unparalleled recreational opportunities, food and shelter for a diverse array of animals, and raw material for homes. They also capture, purify, and release water for our use. Recent aerial surveys confirm that our high elevation forests are being threatened by spruce beetle, sudden aspen decline, and mountain pine beetle. But change in our forests is inevitable. To truly understand what is occurring in Colorado’s high elevation forests, it is important to understand how these forests die, renew, grow, and function. That is the purpose of this report. This is the eighth in a series of forest health reports developed by the Colorado State Forest Service with guidance from stakeholders who share our concern for Colorado’s forests. As you begin reading the report, you will notice that we took a different approach in telling the story about our high country forests. The report still contains the latest scientific forestry information that readers have come to expect, but it also tells a story that considers the human connection with our forests. During my travels around the state, I have been reminded about the importance of that connection. Many of us choose to live here because of the quality of life our forests provide. And it is up to each of us to take the necessary action to protect them. The action we take now will shape the forests of the future – and the benefits they provide. Selection of calving areas by ungulates may be ultimately related to trade-offs between minimizing risk of predation and meeting nutritional needs for lactation. We used digital and field data to examine selection of calving areas by 31 global positioning system–collared moose (Alces alces) in southeastern British Columbia. We exam- ined movements 12 days before and after calving, and analyzed habitat selection at 2 scales of comparison: the immediate calving area to the extended calving area (100 ha), and the extended calving area to the surrounding home range. Maternal moose exhibited 1 of 2 distinct elevational strategies for calving area selection during the days leading up to calving: 16 moose were climbers and 15 were nonclimbers. Climbers moved a mean of 310 m higher in elevation to calve, whereas nonclimbers showed little change in elevation. Hourly movements by all maternal females increased 2- to 3-fold in the 1–4 days before calving and were generally directional, such that all calving areas were outside of areas used during the 12 days before calving. At the broad scale, elevation was the strongest predictor of the extended calving area within the home range.

The CDT traverses 800 miles of these majestic and challenging peaks dotted with abandoned homesteads and ghost towns, and crosses the ancestral lands of the Ute, Eastern Shoshone, and Cheyenne peoples. This letter is a summary and explanation of the enclosed Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) 2020-2021 OHV Trail Grant funding recommendations for Parks and Wildlife Commission (PWC) approval during the May 2020 meeting. We are requesting approval for 60 grants for a total award amount of $4,273,860. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Division’s (CPW) Trails Program, a statewide program within CPW, administers grants for trail-related projects on an annual basis. Local, county, and state governments, federal agencies, special recreation districts, and non-profit organizations with management responsibilities over public lands may apply for and are eligible to receive non- motorized and motorized trail grants. Colorado’s Off-highway Vehicle Trail Program CPW’s OHV Program is statutorily created in sections 33-14.5-101 through 33-14.5-113, Colorado Revised Statutes. The program is funded through the sale of OHV registrations and use permits. It is estimated that almost 200,000 OHVs were registered or permitted for use in Colorado during the 2019-2020 season. The price of an annual OHV registration or use- permit is $25.25. Funds are used to support the statewide OHV Program, the OHV Registration Program and OHV Trail Grant Program, including OHV law enforcement. The OHV Program seeks to improve and enhance motorized recreation opportunities in Colorado while promoting safe, responsible use of OHVs.

    United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests DRAFT Wilderness Evaluation Report August 2018 Designated in the original Wilderness Act of 1964, the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness covers more than 183,000 acres spanning the Gunnison and White River National Forests.
