Cathy Scroggs, vice chancellor for student affairs, speaks at the MSA presidential inauguration April 13, 2017. | Sophie Nedelco/Photographer Vice Chancellor for Students Affairs Cathy Scroggs will retire in July Scroggs, MU’s top student affairs official, announced her upcoming retirement in a news release Friday. Scroggs has been at MU since 1985 and has served as vice chancellor since 2003. She also completed her doctorate in higher education administration here. Currently, there are no decisions on her replacement, MU spokesman Christian Basi said in an email. “Mizzou has been my home for 32 years, and I’m very proud of the work we have done to support and serve students,” Scroggs said in the news release. “Students come first in Student Affairs, and that will never change.” 90th annual Tap Day welcomes over 60 new students into six honor societies Tap Day is an MU tradition dating back to 1927. The original Tap Day took place in front of the columns on Francis Quadrangle, but this past Friday, it was held in Jesse Auditorium. The Cavs defeated the Pacers 109-108 when CJ Miles’ game-winning shot clanked off the rim. The Milwaukee Bucks and the Utah Jazz both played the role of spoiler Saturday — the Bucks rolled over the Toronto Raptors 97-83, and the Jazz hit a buzzer-beater to win 97-95 over the Los Angeles Clippers. The Chicago Bulls pulled off an upset Sunday when they defeated the Boston Celtics 106-102. There have only been five eight-seeds to defeat the one-seed in NBA history, with the last coming in 2012 when the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Bulls in six games. Game One of the James Harden-Russell Westbrook showdown went to Harden and the Houston Rockets, as they defeated Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder 118-87. Harden finished with 37 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, while Westbrook had 22 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. NHL Recap: The St. Louis Blues defeated the Minnesota Wild on Sunday night 3- 1 and have jumped out to a 3-0 series lead. Only four teams have blown a 3-0 lead in NHL history, so unless the unexpected happens, the Blues will be moving on soon. The Pittsburgh Penguins have also dominated their opening round series, as they have jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Penguins won 4-3 in overtime Sunday in Columbus. While the Blues and Penguins have thrived this postseason, the Chicago Blackhawks have struggled mightily. The Blackhawks lost 5-0 to the Nashville Predators on Saturday night, which puts them in a two-game hole going back to Nashville for games four and five. The Blackhawks failed to score a goal in either of the first two games. The Toronto Maple Leafs outlasted the Washington Capitals in two overtimes on Saturday to win 4-3 to even the series at one. Parents of a student who died after he fell off a balcony have reached a $5 million settlement MU freshman Jack Lipp fell off a two-story balcony in 2014 at a Pi Kappa Phi rush party. His parents reached a $5 million settlement with the company Ginger C, LLC, the owners of the property where Lipp was injured. Lipp fell Dec. 13, 2014, and died from his injuries on Dec. 25. The company had inspected and was aware of the defective balcony, but declined to fix it because the house was set to be demolished soon anyway. Feature of the Day For women seeking abortions, state restrictions make access a challenge Alison Dreith never imagined that she would receive an abortion. But last May, at the age of 35, she went with her husband to Illinois for the procedure. One in three women in America will have an abortion during her lifetime, but in Missouri, restrictions on access to abortion services have made getting abortions very difficult. Missouri law requires a 72-hour waiting period for women before they have their initial consultation with an abortion provider. Dreith, who lives in St. Louis and is the executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri, decided to get her abortion in Illinois because she didn’t want to be forced to wait. Through NARAL, she knew the provider in Illinois personally, which she said made the choice to go out of state easier. “[Having to get an abortion] was really shocking,” Dreith said. “I decided to have my abortion procedure in Illinois because I had waited long enough … I didn’t want to be shamed by Missouri law and wait 72 hours again.” Read the rest of the feature here.
