1.1 –CORPORATE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT (CPM) AND BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE (BI) WITH POWER BI

The virtue of fast and effective data visualizations of analytics is accepted as organizations have adopted the metric driven approach to drive organizational efficacy in achieving their strategic objectives. According to Gartner, there are many niche players and visionaries in the Business Intelligence and Analytics space. Microsoft has been ranked for the last 10 years as a leader in the industry and as the leader with the furthest vision, for two consecutive years. They are demonstrating a determination to build a platform that delivers real time data with custom visuals that can be uniquely tailored to create rich and compelling reports, which help visualize your organizations critical KPI.

1.2 – PURPOSE OF GUIDE

The purpose of this document is to present a general overview of steps necessary to get you started with Power BI quickly. This process will take you through the steps to get a PowerBI account, download the software and create a report that you can share with your organization.

Section 2 – CREATE A POWER BI ACCOUNT

2.1 – GETTING STARTED WITH POWER BI

There are three methods to get started with Power BI, outlined below:

1. Already Enrolled in PowerBI? 2. Sign up for Power BI with your enterprise or School email address. 3. Create an Office365 Enterprise Test Tenant to sign up for Power BI

2.2 – ALREADY ENROLLED IN POWER BI?

If your organization subscribes to Office365 you might already have PowerBI, depending on how it is administered. Go to Office.com and click ‘Sign in’ and then proceed to sign in with your work email address and password. (1) Select the yellow app launcher in the upper left-hand window, (2) select ‘All apps’ (3) and then scroll down and select ‘Power BI’. The list is in alphabetical order, proceed to the next method if you do not see the Power BI app listed. Proceed to Section 3 if you are already enrolled.

2.3 – SIGN UP WITH WORK OR SCHOOL EMAIL ADDRESS

This is the primary method for signing up for Power BI (if you do not have an account already). It is preferable to open an Incognito or InPrivate browsing session to avoid any cookie conflicts. Begin by navigating to PowerBI.com, then follow the below steps.

If you receive an error message you may need to contact your IT department to complete enrollment, e.g. ‘We can’t finish signing you up. Your IT department has turned off signup for Microsoft Power BI’. This typically indicates your administrator has disabled AdHoc subscriptions.

2.4 – CREATE AN OFFICE 365 ENTERPRISE TEST TENANT TO SIGN UP FOR POWER BI

Not an IT admin or global admin? Don’t have a work or school email address? Create a PowerBI Tenant for testing: There are a couple of ways to go about doing this. One method is to sign up for your own domain. The other, and free method is to sign up for an Office 365 trial, details below:

Step 1: Go to Office.com, then go to Products and select 'Enterprise' under business

Step 2: Next, select ‘See Plans & Pricing’

Step 3: On the next screen select 'Learn more' Under either Office 365 E3 or E5 plan options.

Step 4: Next, select ‘Free Trial’

Step 5: Next, fill out the form with your personal information (Gmail, Outlook, iCloud etc.). This will not be the email address you sign into Power BI with – it is the address for communications that will be sent to you for the Tenant that you are creating. Once finished, select ‘Next’

Step 6: Next, create the information for your Tenant, create a (1) User ID, (2) Tenant name (Needs to be unique and available) and (3) password. Once finished, select ‘Create my account’ Make sure to save this information as you will need it later to sign in to Power BI and https://portal.office.com for the Tenant

Step 7: You will need to confirm you are not a robot. You can have the system text or call you.

Step 8: Once received, enter your Verification code and select ‘Next’.

Step 9: Click ‘Start Setup’. You will see a series of messages on the screen. Make sure to give the process a few minutes – Don’t refresh the page!. Once this process is finished you will have a complete Office365 E3 or E5 trial tenant, which includes Exchange online email capabilities, SharePoint as well as some other interesting features.

Step 10: Once the process to create the Tenant is complete you will need to proceed back to the instruction in Section 2.3 to sign up for Power BI. Note, this is only required if you sign up for the E3 trial as the E5 trial comes with a Power BI pro subscription.

Section 3 – INSTALLING POWER BI DESKTOP

3.1 – INSTALLATION OPTIONS

There are three methods to download the Power BI Desktop design tool.

1. The installation method recommended is via the as this version is currently the only version that is automatically updated every month when the next iteration of Power BI desktop is released. At the time of revision 1.0, each monthly release has approximately 14 revisions. 2. Navigate to Powerbi.Microsoft.com and download the Desktop application from the home page 3. Navigate Powerbi.Microsoft.com, sign in and download from the Power BI Service platform

3.2 – INSTALL FROM MICROSOFT STORE

Step 1: To begin, press the windows key and then type in ‘microsoft store’ and then click on the match to open the Microsoft Store.

Step 2: Use the store search feature, type in ‘Power BI Desktop’

3.3 – INSTALL FROM POWER BI HOMEPAGE

Step 1: Navigate to Powerbi.Microsoft.com, scroll to the bottom of the page and select ‘ Start Free’

Step 2 Select ‘Download Free’

Step 3 Proceed to the steps outlined in 3.2 and install from the Microsoft Store

3.3 – INSTALL FROM POWER BI SERVICE

Step 1: Navigate to Powerbi.Microsoft.com and click ‘Sign In’

Step 2: Click on the arrow in the upper right hand corner and select ‘Power BI Desktop’ from the drop down menu.

Step 3: Either run the application or save it to a local file and then run it locally. Follow the prompts in the setup wizard to complete the install

Section 4 – ON-PREMISES DATA GATEWAY

4.1 – INSTALLING THE GATEWAY

Step 1: Navigate to https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/ and download the gateway

Step 2: Either run the application or save it to a local file and then run it locally. Follow the set up wizard instructions.

Step 3: Click ‘Next’ to begin

Step 4: Select Enterprise (The Recommended option) or Personal Gateway and select ‘Next’ to proceed

Step 5: Important reminders will pop up - select ‘Next’ to proceed

Step 6: Choose a navigation path for where you would like to install the program, read and accept the terms of use and privacy statement as applicable and then select ‘Install’ to proceed

Step 7: To proceed, you will need to select ‘Yes’ to allow the app to make changes to your device

Step 8: Choose the email address to use with the gateway and click ‘Sign-in’

Step 10: You are next prompted with two options, you can either (1) Register a new gateway on the computer you are installing it on or (2) Migrate, restore, or takeover an existing gateway.

Step 11: Create a new on-premises data gateway name and choose whether to add to an existing cluster. Different options will become available depending on the choice that you selected. If you add it to an existing cluster then you will need the recovery key that you stored for the existing cluster. For our purposes we will assume that this is the first time creating a Data Gateway and you are therefore creating a new cluster. After filling in the values, select ‘Configure’
