Inviting Applications for Expression of Interest (EOI) for “Selection of Caravan Tour Operators” 2.1. JLR Jungle Lodges and Resorts Limited (JLR), Government of Karnataka, established in 1980, promotes eco-tourism, adventure tourism and various wildlife destinations in Karnataka. Working closely with the Forest Department, it runs 23 properties across national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and the coast, making it India’s largest chain of eco-tourism resorts. Various outdoor activities such as trekking, camping, safaris, white water rafting, etc. are offered at these resorts. Apart from this, JLR also provides consultancy services to other state governments in promoting eco-tourism. 2.2. Background Karnataka is blessed with immense natural beauty and is one of the most popular tourism destinations in India. The state is abundantly rich with tourist attractions which includes beaches, hill stations, heritage monuments, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries etc. Given the variety of tourism assets, the state is promoted under the tagline “One State, Many Worlds”. Looking at the growing demand for eco-tourism and adventure that involves visiting and staying in remote areas like forests or riverside, the recently launched Karnataka Tourism Policy 2020-25 identifies and promotes Caravan Tourism. The concept of Caravan Tourism has been gaining immense popularity owing to the freedom and flexibility it provides while holidaying vis-à-vis itineraries and accommodation. Motor Caravans are a unique tourism product, which promotes tours even in circuits / destinations that may not have adequate accommodation facilities. There is often shortage of accommodation at tourist destinations in remote areas and other places where

Ambudkar III Preface Tipu is an object of reverence in Pakistan; naturally so, as he lived and died for Islam. A Street in Islamabad (Rawalpindi) is named after him. A missile developed by Pakistan bears his name. Even in India there is no lack of his admirers. Recently the Government of Karnataka decided to celebrate his birth anniversary, a decision which generated considerable opposition. While the official line was that Tipu was a freedom fighter, a liberal, tolerant and enlightened ruler, its opponents accused that he was a bigot, a mass murderer, a rapist. This book is written to show him as he really was. To state it briefly: If Tipu would have been allowed to have his way, most probably, there would have been, besides an East and a West Pakistan, a South Pakistan as well. At the least there would have been a refractory state like the Nizam's. His suppression in 1792, and ultimate destruction in 1799, had therefore a profound impact on the history of India. There is a class of historians who, for a long time, are portraying Tipu as a benevolent ruler. To counter them I can do no better than to follow Dr. R. C. Majumdar: “This … tendency”, he writes, “to make history the vehicle of certain definite political, social and economic ideas, which reign supreme in each country for the time being, is like a cloud, at present no bigger than a man's hand, but which may soon grow in volume, and overcast the sky, covering the light of the world by an impenetrable gloom.

Vasco-da-Gama had reached the Indian coast in 1498 while searching for a sea route between India and Europe. During the second trip in 1504, he had landed at Anjediv island near modern Karwar. He had an encounter with “Timoja” (Thimmayya), the naval commander of Vijayanagara, Whom the Portuguese call a pirate. Gama defeated the Vijayanagara subordinate of the Saluva family at Bhatkal. The next year, the Portuguese Viceroy to India, Almeida attacked and burnt Honawar (‘Onor’ as the Portuguese call it). Thimmayya met the Viceroy and negotiated for friendship. The Arab traders had been dominating over the trade in the Arabian Sea. They enjoyed monopoly of the trade in horses being brought from the Middle-East. Thimmayya was very keen on cultivating friendship with the newcomers in the interest of Vijayanagara empire. The Vijayanagara Empire was very keen on securing horses from the co-religionist Sultans, like those of Bijapur, who were enemies of Vijayanagara. The Portuguese were allowed to trade at the ports of the empire, but their request to have a factory at Bhatkal was turned down. The Portuguese, claiming to be the “masters of the seas”, collected tribute from the ports in Karnataka with whom they traded like Bhatkal, Kundapur, Basrur, Manjeshwar, Kumble, Mulki, Karnad, Chittakul, Ankola, Gokarna, Mirjan, Honavar, etc. When any port refused to pay tribute, they attacked and even burnt it as they did in Mangalore in 1515, and again in 1530 and 1532.
