We've Got You All Covered July 6-12, 2020 BEYOND THE GIANT VAULT - CAIN'S Housed in a 5,000 square foot building, the Giants Archives consists of memorabilia and artifacts from our team’s 138-year history. As part of the Giants Fan Page, fans can now, for the first time, learn about and view memorabilia from our collec- tion.

Matt Cain made history on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 when he threw the first perfect game in franchise history, but even dur- ing a perfect game, baseball is a team sport.

The Giants have eight in the Baseball Hall of Fame and have thrown 17 no-hitters (plus four shortened-game no-no’s), but on a Wednesday night against the Astros in 2012 Giants fans saw something that had never happened before, a perfect game. Cain was on a role when he took the mound that night with an 8-2 record, and having won his last six games, but a perfect game was not on anyone’s mind. In the top of the 1st inning, the Astros struck out twice and one player popped up - this was basically how the entire game went for the Astros. In the bottom of the first the Giants had two hits and scored two runs - this was basically how the entire game went for the Giants. When the game was said and done, the Astros did not have a runner touch first base and struck out 14 times while the Giants hit three homers, scored 10 runs and made history. The photo above is the pitching rubber from that night's game.

Gregor Blanco and Cain will forever be linked because of one, unbelievable catch in the 7th inning. We’ll let Giants announcers Duane Kuiper and Jon Miller take it from here: “[Kuiper] Listen to that crowd. And this is hit out into the alleyway, a long run for Blanco. And Blanco is going to dive! And he makes the catch!!! Just an unbelievable catch here in the 7th inning. That was unbe- lievable. [Miller] … At the last moment it looked like no, but he makes the desperation dive, and then he has to hold on to it as he hits the deck. Look at the concentration there and look at that play! And was watching as well… and maybe saying the same thing ‘Are you kidding me?’” The full Cain Perfect Game exhibit will be online starting Thursday PRESS BOX EATS THE GAMER | ISSUE ONE
