One side is mostly Victorian New-Gothic from the late 19th century, with buildings covered in turrets, gargoyles and curlicues; on the other side is a stunning panorama of Art Deco buildings from the early 1900s, with curvilinear structures, pastel coloured walls, marble corridors inlaid with teak and sweeping balconies with stern brows. Art Deco may have originated in France in the early 1900s, but it was the architects of what was then Bombay who embraced it with unbridled enthusiasm, starting in the 1930s. They gave it their own unique flavor, often adding elements in the design that gave it a distinctively Indian character, creating a style often referred to as IndoDeco. The south and central areas of the city and some of the northern suburbs, which were largely built in that era, are still strewn with these architectural gems, many of which have now gone to seed.     Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro-3 Corridor* MMRC completes 50% tunnelling in 19 months Mumbai, June 10, 2019 – The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has achieved another significant milestone as it completed 28-km of the 56-km tunneling on the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro-3 corridor. The work-happy team attains 50% tunneling by overcoming various challenges within a period of 19 months. The total length of 56-km is calculated on the basis of two up and down tunnels for the 33.5-km alignment deducting the underground station box lengths in between. “Tunneling under Mumbai’s heritage buildings, old residential complexes, an existing elevated metro line with different and sometimes difficult geological conditions has been a daunting task. "Look," he said, his excitement rising, "Look at the grill work, look at the brass lamps!" Swiping one image after the next on his ipad, Kumar rummaged through a series of shots of art deco buildings in the western city of Mumbai; buildings he has known and loved for years. Now he is trying to bring them to the wider attention of the public, and put the city's art deco heritage in a definitive way on the global map. In December last year, a small team assembled by Mr Kumar began working on documenting exactly how many art deco buildings there are in the city. Urban legend has it that there are at least 200, and anecdotally, Mumbai is believed to have the second highest number of art deco buildings after Miami. "But we wanted to get a sense of the actual number," said Mr Kumar, a finance professional by day. "Mumbai has been living in the shadow of Miami and in the shadow of its Gothic heritage. We wanted to get it out of the shadow of both." The city is best known for its triumphant 19th Century buildings like the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station, the Bombay High Court, and the municipal headquarters. So its later structures have remained relatively less celebrated. With his passion project Art Deco Mumbai - a documentation endeavour, social media effort and soon-to-be-launched web repository - Mr Kumar is hoping to change that.
