The initiative to set up such an institute was taken by the late Dr. H.J. Bhabha, FRS in 1943. The Institute is the National Centre of the Government of India for Nuclear Science and Mathematics. The Institute is a Public Trust registered under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950. Under a tripartite agreement between the Government of India, Govern- ment of Maharashtra and the Trustees of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, rules have been framed for the administration and management of the Institute. There is a council of management consisting of 8 members including the Chairman, three members appointed by the Government of India, two members appointed by the trustees of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, one member from the Goverment of Maha- rashtra, a Co-opted member and the Director of the Institute (ex-officio member). The major portion of the expenditure of the Institute is borne by the Govern- ment of India. The Institute comes under the administrative purview of the De- partment of Atomic Energy through which these grants are channelled. TIFR has a total staff of about 1800. The work of the Institute is carried on in three schools : School of Mathematics School of Natural Sciences School of Technology and Computer Science. 2 School of Mathematics The activities of the School of Mathematics centre around the lectures and sem- inars conducted by members of the school, supplemented by lectures given by eminent visiting mathematicians from all over the world. The group is engaged in active research in almost every major branch of pure mathematics. There is a collaborative programme in applications of mathematics with Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore started in 1973-74. 3 3 The Environment The Institute in many aspects, reflects the personality of its founder. Dr. Homi J. Bhabha was deeply interested in Science and his greatest intellectual achieve- ments were scientific. The prime objective and characteristic of the institute is, no doubt, scientific research, but Dr. Bhabha was also interested in many other facts which make up a complete life like music, architecture, painting and sculpture, landscapes, gardens, trees and flowers, international friendship and the applica- tion of science for the benefit of society. His interest in each of these was deep and he gave practical shape to these interests. This can be seen reflected in the Institute. 4 General Information for Visitors 1. • Colonial Indian Architecture:A Historical Overview
Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology Issn No : 1006-7930 Colonial Indian Architecture:A Historical Overview Debobrat Doley Research Scholar, Dept of History Dibrugarh University Abstract: The British era is a part of the subcontinent’s long history and their influence is and will be seen on many societal, cultural and structural aspects. India as a nation has always been warmly and enthusiastically acceptable of other cultures and ideas and this is also another reason why many changes and features during the colonial rule have not been discarded or shunned away on the pretense of false pride or nationalism. As with the Mughals, under European colonial rule, architecture became an emblem of power, designed to endorse the occupying power. Numerous European countries invaded India and created architectural styles reflective of their ancestral and adopted homes. The European colonizers created architecture that symbolized their mission of conquest, dedicated to the state or religion. The British, French, Dutch and the Portuguese were the main European powers that colonized parts of India. So the paper therefore aims to highlight the growth and development Colonial Indian Architecture with historical perspective. Keywords: Architecture, British, Colony, European, Modernism, India etc. INTRODUCTION: India has a long history of being ruled by different empires, however, the British rule stands out for more than one reason. The British governed over the subcontinent for more than three hundred years. Their rule eventually ended with the Indian Independence in 1947, but the impact that the British Raj left over the country is in many ways still hard to shake off.

  • From Bombay to Mumbai
Travelogue Armchair travels From Bombay to Mumbai This learning reminiscence discussion with six senior citizens from Eudora, Missouri, explores a different travel destination each month with things to learn, questions to answer, and a whole lot of fun along the way. This month they are traveling to Mumbai, India, to immerse themselves in the Indian culture. Traveling How-To’s & Tips • This is a copy of the complete trip for the facilitator to use. This activity can be acted out or read aloud in a skit-like manner by participants representing the six different Front Porch characters using this large-print dialogue. • Check out the links in the article for additional information to bring to the activity. • This PDF slide presentation may be better suited as a stand-alone activity for some audiences. The presenter can refer to the facilitator copy of the complete trip for links and more information to add as the slides are reviewed. • Post a sign announcing the trip. • If your group isn’t familiar with the Front Porch Travelers, have them Meet the McGivers (and friends). A Travel Advisory from Nell and Truman: If using all the information in Travelogue seems too complex for your group, trim it back and just present sections—such as showing and discussing the slide show or copies of the pictures, reading and discussing trivia points, or asking and discussing questions from the Discussion Starters. From Bombay to Mumbai Introduction India is a land of mystery and intrigue—so many sights, sounds, and smells (some good and some not so good).

  • 17.1.1 Geology and Geomorphology
MUMBAI CITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN 2005-2025 17. DISASTER MANAGEMENT 17.1. Existing Situation Geographically, Greater Mumbai is an island outside the mainland of Konkan in Maharashtra separated from the mainland by the narrow Thane Creek and a somewhat wider Harbor Bay. At present, it covers the original island group of Mumbai, and most of the island of Salsette, with the former Trombay island appended to it in its Southeast. A small part in the north the Salsette island however, lies in Thane District. The Salsette-Mumbai island creek and the Thane creek together separate it from the mainland. Thus the area of Greater Mumbai is surrounded on three sides by the seas: by the Arabian Sea to the west and the south, the Harbor Bay and the Thane Creek in the east - but in the north, the district of Thane stretches along its boundary across the northern parts of Salsette. Its height is hardly 10 to 15 meters above sea level. At some places the height is just above the sea level. Part of Mumbai City district (Backbay and Bandra reclamation) are the major reclamation areas of Mumbai in the Arabian sea. The predominant soil cover in Mumbai city is sandy whereas in the suburban district, the soil cover is alluvial and loamy. 17.1.1 Geology and Geomorphology The entire Greater Mumbai area is occupied by Deccan basalt flows and their acid and basic variants, poured out between the late Cretaceous and early Eocene times. The basaltic flows are horizontally bedded and are more or less uniform in character over wide areas.

E XECUT IV E S UMMARY Disaster Risk Management (DRM) is based on the principle that the impacts of disasters can be reduced through appropriate preparedness, planning and management actions. The range of measures utilized in DRM policies, strategies and actions are ultimately meant to contribute to the safety and well-being of communities, at the same time protecting assets and development gains and improving services to population. The Disaster Risk Management Master Plan (DRMMP) is an analytical model based on international standards which is being prepared for Mumbai that will guide Mumbai in efficiently mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) at the local level through a coherent set of policies, strategies and actions. The collaborative and participatory planning process adopted in the development of the DRMMP ensures consensus and ownership among the stakeholders and enables long term institutional sustainability. By adopting the DRMMP as a management tool for disaster risk management, Mumbai will be able to mobilize institutional and community resources and provide a coherent and efficient approach of actions prior, during and after a disaster.
