  • From Sexploitation to Canuxploitation (Representations of Gender in the Canadian ‘Slasher’ Film)
Maple Syrup Gore: From Sexploitation to Canuxploitation (Representations of Gender in the Canadian ‘Slasher’ Film) by Agnieszka Mlynarz A Thesis presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Theatre Studies Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Agnieszka Mlynarz, April, 2017 ABSTRACT Maple Syrup Gore: From Sexploitation to Canuxploitation (Representations of Gender in the Canadian ‘Slasher’ Film) Agnieszka Mlynarz Advisor: University of Guelph, 2017 Professor Alan Filewod This thesis is an investigation of five Canadian genre films with female leads from the Tax Shelter era: The Pyx, Cannibal Girls, Black Christmas, Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS, and Death Weekend. It considers the complex space women occupy in the horror genre and explores if there are stylistic cultural differences in how gender is represented in Canadian horror. In examining variations in Canadian horror from other popular trends in horror cinema the thesis questions how normality is presented and wishes to differentiate Canuxploitation by defining who the threat is. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Dr. Paul Salmon and Dr. Alan Filewod. Alan, your understanding, support and above all trust in my offbeat work ethic and creative impulses has been invaluable to me over the years. Thank you. To my parents, who never once have discouraged any of my decisions surrounding my love of theatre and film, always helping me find my way back despite the tears and deep- seated fears. To the team at Black Fawn Distribution: Chad Archibald, CF Benner, Chris Giroux, and Gabriel Carrer who brought me back into the fold with open arms, hearts, and a cold beer.

Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 Jonathan Wroot PhD Thesis Submitted to the University of East Anglia For the qualification of PhD in Film Studies 2013 1 Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 2 Acknowledgements Thanks needed to be expressed to a number of people over the last three years – and I apologise if I forget anyone here. First of all, thank you to Rayna Denison and Keith Johnston for agreeing to oversee this research – which required reining in my enthusiasm as much as attempting to tease it out of me and turn it into coherent writing. Thanks to Mark Jancovich, who helped me get started with the PhD at UEA. A big thank you also to Andrew Kirkham and Adam Torel for doing what they do at 4Digital Asia, Third Window, and their other ventures – if they did not do it, this thesis would not exist. Also, a big thank you to my numerous other friends and family – whose support was invaluable, despite the distance between most of them and Norwich. And finally, the biggest thank you of all goes to Christina, for constantly being there with her support and encouragement. 3 Abstract The thesis will examine how DVD distribution can affect Japanese film dissemination in the UK. The media discourse concerning 4Digital Asia and Third Window proposes that this is the principal factor influencing their films’ presence in the UK from 2008 to 2010.

  • Call for Chapters: New Critical Approaches to the Giallo Film
H-Announce Call for Chapters: New Critical Approaches to the Giallo Film. Announcement published by Fernando Gabriel Pagnoni Berns on Monday, January 21, 2019 Type: Call for Publications Date: April 29, 2019 Subject Fields: Humanities, Film and Film History, European History / Studies, Italian History / Studies, Popular Culture Studies Call for Chapters: New Critical Approaches to the Giallo Film. Essays are sought for an academic book that aims to examine the popular cycle of films widely known as “giallo.” Growing out of the Gothic Italian cycle (but influenced by foreign cycles such as the German “Krimi” film), the giallo film was a cultural and historical phenomenon. Meaning yellow in Italian, the giallo was an umbrella term for crime fiction, named after the bright yellow covers of cheap paperbacks ranging from Agatha Christie to Edgar Wallace. Soon enough, the term giallo was adopted to signify a Italian cycle of thriller cinema much closer to the horror film than the suspense or noir films made in America. Mario Bava kickstarted the cycle with two films, The Girl who Knew Too Much (La Ragazza che Sapeva Troppo, 1963) and Blood and Black Lace (Sei Donne per l’Assesino, 1964), while Dario Argento gave it the definitive form with his The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (L’Uccello dalle Piume di Cristallo, 1970). The giallo film influenced its American counterparts, paving the path to the American slasher formula of the 1980s. Even if there are two books on the subject, including Mikel Koven’s excellentLa Dolce Morte: Vernacular Cinema and the Italian Giallo Film (McFarland, 2006) —a monograph recounting the history of the cycle—, there is a strong lack on essays taking individual films for a close reading and analytical insight.

  • 1 Evolving Authorship, Developing Contexts: 'Life Lessons'
Notes 1 Evolving Authorship, Developing Contexts: ‘Life Lessons’ 1. This trajectory finds its seminal outlining in Caughie (1981a), being variously replicated in, for example, Lapsley and Westlake (1988: 105–28), Stoddart (1995), Crofts (1998), Gerstner (2003), Staiger (2003) and Wexman (2003). 2. Compare the oft-quoted words of Sarris: ‘The art of the cinema … is not so much what as how …. Auteur criticism is a reaction against sociological criticism that enthroned the what against the how …. The whole point of a meaningful style is that it unifies the what and the how into a personal state- ment’ (1968: 36). 3. For a fuller discussion of the conception of film authorship here described, see Grist (2000: 1–9). 4. While for this book New Hollywood Cinema properly refers only to this phase of filmmaking, the term has been used by some to designate ‘either something diametrically opposed to’ such filmmaking, ‘or some- thing inclusive of but much larger than it’ (Smith, M. 1998: 11). For the most influential alternative position regarding what he calls ‘the New Hollywood’, see Schatz (1993). For further discussion of the debates sur- rounding New Hollywood Cinema, see Kramer (1998), King (2002), Neale (2006) and King (2007). 5. ‘Star image’ is a concept coined by Richard Dyer in relation to film stars, but it can be extended to other filmmaking personnel. To wit: ‘A star image is made out of media texts that can be grouped together as promotion, publicity, films and commentaries/criticism’ (1979: 68). 6. See, for example, Grant (2000), or the conception of ‘post-auteurism’ out- lined and critically demonstrated in Verhoeven (2009).

Giorgio Melloni offered invaluable insights into Italian cinema, and I am especially grateful to him for stepping out of his comfort zone to watch and discuss horror films. I would also like to thank Meredith Ray for encouraging me to undertake this endeavor, which has been the highlight of my academic career. • Whose Canon Is It Anyway? Subcultural Capital, Cultural Distinction and Value in High Art and Low Culture Film Distribution
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by STORE - Staffordshire Online Repository Whose Canon is it Anyway? Subcultural Capital, Cultural Distinction and Value in High Art and Low Culture Film Distribution Mark McKenna According to figures from the British Film Institute (BFI), the UK has the second largest filmed entertainment market in the world, coming second only to the USA,1 worth an estimated £3.8 billion (2016, p. 2). How we choose to navigate the sheer volume of films available to us is significantly affected by the circulation of discourse, often related to its visibility, as well as notions of taste. Jonathan Rosenbaum suggests that we can observe a segmentation of the discourse surrounding film—where the mainstream, the industry and academia all reinforce and promote their own agendas (2000). Historically, early film criticism was concerned with legitimising these texts and their study, consequently attempting to align film analysis with that of broader historical approaches established in the analysis of the fine arts. These early valorisations about what might constitute the highest quality representations, and the subsequent forma- tion of the film studies discipline, led to the formation of the first canons. Paul Schrader argues that by definition, the film canon is ‘based upon criteria that transcend taste’ (2006, p. 34). Whether a film appeals to you personally or whether the film was hugely popular are inconsequential considerations, instead, every effort should be made to separate out ‘per- sonal favourites from those movies that artistically defined film history’ (ibid.). Within this separation lies what Janet Staiger has referred to as the ‘politics of inclusion and exclusion’, where ‘some films are moved to the center of attention; others, to the margins’ (1985, p.
