    Biography of Mohsen Makhmalbaf Born on 1957 in Tehran. He spent four and a half years of his life in prison as a political activist from the age of 17 to 22. While in prison he became interested in writing. Currently there are 27 books published from Mohsen Makhmalbaf as a ground-breaking writer. In 1994, he participated with two of his films “Time Of Love” & “Salam Cinema” in official section of Cannes Film Festival. He returned to Cannes in 1995 with his next film “Gabbeh”. At the same time his other film “A Moment Of Innocence” was premiered in Locarno film Festival in 1995. He took part in Venice film festival in 1996 with his film “The Silence”. One year before the September 11th incident took place with his film “Kandahar”, premiered in Cannes film festival 2001, he put Afghanistan into the map before any other media. After making Kandahar he halted his filmmaking activities for two years in order to help and support Afghan Children thorough some of his Human Right activities. Mohsen Makhmalbaf managed to change a law in Iran, during the presidential period of the former democrat president of Iran Mr.Khatami, which resulted in the education of half a million Afghan Children refugees in Iran. He took charge of executing 82 projects in a 2 year period on education, building schools, teaching cinema and hygiene within Afghanistan as well as Iran to improve the living conditions of Afghan people. Mohsen Makhmalbaf is the winner of more than 30 prominent international awards including the Legion d’honneur Medallion form France as well as The Best Asian Filmmaker of the world award from Pusan International Film Festival.

    The Collective Performance of Female Youth in The Apple (1998) by Rowena Santos Aquino In this essay, I examine Iranian filmmaker Samira Makhmalbaf‘s debut feature film, The Apple (1998). I argue that Makhmalbaf‘s film, and its use of social actor reenactment, gestures towards the creation of an alternative sociopolitical/cultural space of expression and action for female youth and women that recalibrates the relationship between society, audiovisual media, and the female body. It provides an instance of reimagining a space for collective performance of female voices that understands filmmaking as dialogic, multivocal, creative, and collaborative. I argue that reenactment is what enables this space and collective performance to emerge. To elaborate my argument, I contextualize The Apple in representations of children in Iranian cinema on the one hand, and the use of reenactment in documentary film on the other. I draw out in particular the documentary/fiction divide that factors into each of these representational systems. Through the reenactment of actual experiences performed by the social actors to whom these experiences belong, The Apple negotiates a forum for discussion of the intimate, politicized relationship between private and public that is often played out on female bodies in the context of contemporary post-revolutionary Iran. In the process, it presents a different conception of a kind of social activist documentary-fiction hybrid filmmaking where authorship is no longer singular but collective. I situate these discussions in the larger sociopolitical/cultural context of the twining of media, society, and the state in Iran. This larger context manifests itself most explicitly on the female body, which must inflect any understanding and/or discussion of both representations of children in Iranian films and, by extension, the blurring of documentary and fiction, which includes the practice of reenactment.

    Cinema in Post-Taliban Afghanistan By Ron Holloway Fall 2009 Issue of KINEMA CINEMA IN POST-TALIBAN AFGHANISTAN Bamyan Buddhas When the giant Buddhas on the Silk Road at Bamyan were destroyed by radical Taliban clerics in March of 2001 in accordance with a strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law, even the Afghan populace was stunned by the disrespect for their own cultural heritage. For in July of 1999 the leading Sharia cleric, Mullah Mohammed Omar, had issued an order for the preservation of the Bamyan Buddhas on the grounds that the Afghanistan Buddhist population scarcely existed, thus removing the possibility of the statues being worshipped. But when 400 radical Taliban clerics launched a ban on all forms of imagery - including music, sports, and television - they reached a questionable consensus that the statues were an affront to Islam. So Mullah Mohammed Omar changed his mind. ”Muslims should be proud of smashing idols,” he said. ”It has given praise to God that we have destroyed them.” The subsequent dynamiting of the Bamyan Buddhas, erected 1500 years ago in the sixth century as a classic example of Indo-Greek art, prompted an immediate protest the world over. The first filmmaker to raise his voice on film and in print was Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, whose Safar é Gandehar (Kandahar) was programmed in the Competition at the 2001 Cannes festival.     Veiled Voices: Female Subjectivity and Gender Relations in Afghan and Iranian Cinemas by Elahe Dehnavi A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Comparative Literature University of Alberta © Elahe Dehnavi, 2017 Abstract Films as cultural products are remarkable sources for examining different dimensions of the complex institution of gender in the society in which they are produced. Focusing on a selection of cinematic narratives from post-Revolution Iran and Post-Taliban Afghanistan, this project examines the films’ representations of women in private and public relations as gendered subjects. Following feminist scholars, who highlight the embodiment of gendered subjectivity in cultural and historical contexts, this thesis explores different aspects of gendered experience in cinematic texts and examines how gender and sexuality are subjected to power. It considers both form and content and aims to provide textual and contextual analysis, but its main purpose is to offer a sociological reading of the selected films. Looking at images of girlhood, motherhood, women’s position in marriage and divorce, female love and desire, and women’s political engagement, it aims to understand how, in what ways, and to what extent independent filmmakers challenge social strains, traditional authority, and political forces that form the dominant discourse of gender and gender relations in Iranian and Afghan cultures. Reading the cinematic narratives in the socio-political context of their production, I contend that these independent films should be seen as part of the current discussions around gender politics and activist endeavours against conservative gender norms. In Afghanistan and Iran, where women’s rights movements are considered anti-Islamic and therefore demonized and repressed by the state or powerful religious groups, filmmakers have become civil activists who use social cinema as a tool to promote social change.
