308 Champion Briefs 8 Topic Analysis Alekh Kale February 2017 Topic Analysis by Alekh Kale Resolved: The United States should lift its embargo against Cuba Introduction I’m sure many of you reading this are pleased that we have had two foreign policy based resolutions in a row. I personally liked foreign policy based resolutions the best when I debated because of the immense literature base created by incredibly intelligent individuals who have spent their lives developing it. This resolution is also one that many of you probably have some level of knowledge on and an opinion about given how frequently it’s been in the news the past couple of years. I would encourage all of you to approach the topic neutrally because you will almost certainly have to debate both sides. US foreign policy toward Cuba is an incredibly intriguing topic dating all the way back to the Cold War, and in many ways, our policy toward Cuba also influences the United States’ relationship with other nations as well as demonstrates the country’s overall stance on economic policy, human rights, coercive diplomacy, and foreign engagement. To say the least, lifting an embargo is more than just improving relations with the Cuban government, (how beneficial that might or might not be is certainly up to interpretation), but also has the capacity to change our geopolitical standing.
