Okay, I'll tell the truth. I did not expect much from the sequel to Promethues, as it seemed that the level of the Alien films declined more and more, but this time, It was quite different. The film has no doubt, the most beautiful views we see in the saga of Alien, has some incredible special effects, a very good script, spectacular performances (Fassbender is incredible) an entertaining plot, good sound design, great visuals And a lot, a lot of blood. I think it is the most bloody and violent film in the entire saga, just like the first time I saw Aliens, this one left me shocked and I try to see again and again. I am a big fan of science fiction and horror, Alien is my favorite saga, I must say that I am very grateful to Scott for the fantastic thing that is this new movie, very incredible, no doubt, it was quite entertaining and intense to experiment it in cinema. But, perhaps one of its biggest mistakes is its strange and too confusing narrative on the part of the director; this film is supposed to be designed to give answers to past problems, to the questions that we have asked ourselves so much, however, it only ends up reeling over themselves and trying to add layer upon layer of complexity that simply end up being unnecessary overexposure. Leaving that aside, it was a quite entertaining movie, with intense scenes and wonderful shots. I also highlight the incredible performance of Fassbender. Simple and fascinating I can describe it. Something interesting that I should highlight; Hell, this movie is brutal..

  • Nature of Elliot Goldenthal's Music
The Nature of Elliot Goldenthal’s Music & A Focus on Alien 3 (& other scores) There is “something different” about Elliot Goldenthal’s music. There is also considerable brain and brawn in Elliot Goldenthal’s film music. His style is difficult to label because his approach is so eclectic depending on the project. Sometimes I feel he is fundamentally an independent art-house composer (perhaps Frida, say, and The Good Thief) although he can demonstrate thrilling orchestral power in scores such as Sphere and the Batman movies that I personally quite enjoyed. Overall he shows a Late Modernist temperament, musically an American Bohemian, but nevertheless grounded somewhat in the mainstream traditions (certainly at least traditional notation). His polystylism (eclectism) is a postmodern characteristic. An excellent example of polystylism is his score for Titus (and Good Thief to a lesser extent, and even an example or two in Alien 3) with the diverse or even odd juxtaposition of genres (symphonic-classical, rock, etc.) that represents in one score the type of projects he collectively undertook over the last fifteen years or so. There is not one clear-cut musical voice, in other words, but a mixture or fusion of different styles. It is, in part, his method of organization. Loosely speaking, his music is avant-garde but certainly not radically so--as in the case of John Cage with his aleatoric (random) music and quite non-traditional notation (although Goldenthal’s music can at select times be aleatoric in effect when he utilizes electronic music, quarter-toning, and other devices). He is experimental and freewheeling but certainly this tendency is not overblown and expanded into the infinite! He definitely takes advantage of what technology has to offer (MIDI applications, timbre sampling, synthesizer usage, etc.) but does not discard what traditions are useful for him to express his vision of musical art.

It argues that this connection was not integral to the character as he was originally created, but was imposed by later writers over time and mainly for cinematic adaptations. This thesis also tracks the history of how Christians and churches viewed Superman, as the film studios began to exploit marketing opportunities by comparing Superman and Jesus. This thesis uses the methodological framework of intertextuality to ground its treatment of the sources, but does not follow all of the assumptions of intertextual theorists. iii MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies ABSTRACT This thesis examines the historical trajectory of how the comic book character of Superman came to be identified as a Christ figure in popular consciousness. Superman was created in 1938, but the character developed significantly from his earliest incarnations.

  • Alien: Covenant, Dir. by Ridley Scott (Twentieth Century Fox, 2017)
The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies 17 (Autumn 2018) Alien: Covenant, dir. by Ridley Scott (Twentieth Century Fox, 2017) Alien: Covenant is the sixth instalment in the much-celebrated and critically acclaimed science-fiction/horror saga initiated in 1979 by Ridley Scott’s Alien and consisting also of James Cameron’s Aliens (1986), David Fincher’s Alien³ (1992), Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien: Resurrection (1997) and the prequel film Prometheus (Scott, 2012).1 Alien: Covenant is also the twenty-fourth work by the eclectic eighty-year-old British producer and director, whose work has successfully spanned all cinematic genres, from science fiction (Blade Runner, 1982), through costume and historical drama (1492: Conquest of Paradise, 1992, and Kingdom of Heaven, 2005) and fantasy (Legend, 1985), to the detective film (Black Rain, 1989), the road movie (Thelma and Louise, 1991) and comedy (A Good Year, 2006). Covenant is a sequel to Prometheus; the earlier film depicts the search for the origins of the human species by a group of scientists, explorers, and the leading members of the Weyland Corporation, tracing their encounter with a being belonging to the race of the so- called Engineers. In Prometheus, the explorers discover near the end of the film that the last surviving Engineer had been frozen into hyper-sleep thousands of years earlier, preventing him from destroying Earth, a mission that he fortunately does not complete upon awakening. Prometheus is filled with references to religion, specifically Christian beliefs (allegedly, the Engineers’ mission to destroy our planet was ordered around the time of Christ’s death), the creation of life (the protagonist is sterile, but she gives birth to an alien life form), and, in a nod to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), the horror of a creator refusing his own progeny.

  • Alien Movie Franchise
Bellies that Go Bump in the Night The Gothic Curriculum of Essential Motherhood in the Alien Movie Franchise KELLY WALDROP The Publish House OR CENTURIES, authors and storytellers have used Gothic tales to educate readers about F all manner of subjects, but one of the most common of those subjects is the question of what it means to be human (Bronfen, 2014). The Gothic genre was born amidst the transition from the Victorian era to the Modern era with all of the attendant social and cultural changes, as well as the anxieties, that came along with those changes (Riquelme, 2014). It is a genre rooted in the exploration of anxieties regarding social and cultural change. Taking two of the earliest examples from the European Gothic tradition, Dracula (Stoker, 1897) teaches readers about the dangers of a rampant and virulent sexuality (Riquelme, 2000), while Frankenstein (Shelley, 1818) warns of both obsessiveness and pride, among many other readings of the various cultural anxieties that may be seen to be aired in these works. In these classic Gothic tales, a key focus is also the horrific results of an out-of-control and “unnatural” form of reproduction. In Dracula, part of the horror is rooted in a generative process that is outside of that of the male/female sex act that produces a child. The women in the story are either victims of the tale (Jonathan Harker’s fiancé) or are depicted as frighteningly sexual while incapable of producing what would be considered normal offspring (Dracula’s brides). In Frankenstein, likewise, the central source of horror is the product of a man usurping the “natural” order of creation.

In the run-up to its release, anticipation for this film was at fever pitch because it returns to a world created by Scott in the sci-fi horror classic Alien. The four original Alien films share certain things in common: ■ All were directed by visionary filmmakers at the very beginning of their career (Alien 3 was David Fincher’s first film and Alien Resurrection was the Hollywood debut of Amélie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet). ■ Each film features the same female protagonist - Ripley (Sigourney eaver).W ■ Whilst all four are science fiction films, each has the framework of other genres.

  • Alien Covenant
FRIDAY 26 MAY 2017 By Aakash Bakaya n 1979 director Ridley Scott took a long un-wanted, con- stantly altered screenplay and gave the world 'Alien'. It Ibirthed a new-age of sci-fi classics and forever changed our perceptions of the great wide beyond of space. 7 years later, a young James Cameron would spear-head his sequel 'Aliens' and create another sci-fi masterpiece for the ages. The mythology, the settings and the awe-inspiring terror and design of the classic Xenomorph will go down in cinema history forever. Sadly though, the magic and passion that brought those two films to life have been brought down time and time again by fanatical studio heads, tightly-pressured filmmakers and over ambitious writers who have left this beloved franchise deteriorating in a pool of mediocrity. 'Alien: Covenant' initially looks down and frowns at this pool. Initially showing signs of what made its historical predecessors great but as it progresses, it resigns itself to its faith and jumps right in with the others, wallowing and splashing with the rest of its deformed step-brothers. That initial promise showcased in the first 30 minutes of 'Covenant' is all the more disappointing because of how the film ends up. Muddled, scatter-shot and frustratingly pre- dictable - the second and third act of this decent sci-fi flick sinks the franchise once again right when you think it's at least attempting to hit the highs of the first two. Movie review ALIEN COVENANT Dreaming in space, screaming in space After a brief prologue with David, the android from 'Prometheus', we are taken aboard a colonization ship aptly named Covenant.

A L I E N: Engineers Written by Jon Spaihts FADE IN: EXT. EARTH - DAY (12,000 B.C.) The world turns below us, vast and slow. A RUMBLE. A shadow sweeps over the land. We move with the shadow. We cast the shadow. Landscapes slide by. Reduced by altitude to abstractions: river deltas, forests and flood plains. A raw natural world. No trace of civilization. The shadow glides over mountains and glaciers. Across an ocean and a pale beach. Over lowland plain at the foot of a VOLCANIC MOUNTAIN it stops. EXT. LOWLAND PLAIN - DAY THREE FIGURES walk out of the shadow. They are men - and yet not men. Their skin is snow-white. Their features heavy and classical - as if Rodin’s Thinker had risen from his seat. Their smooth heads are earless and hairless. Their glittering eyes entirely black. Against the stark land their height is impossible to judge. They are ENGINEERS. Two of them are cloaked in dark robes of strange design. The third is naked. One of the cloaked Engineers opens a featureless black box: inside lies a cake of dark, sticky material. The naked one lifts the dark cake with ceremonial slowness. It hums and buzzes. Foams into iridescent spheres. He raises the seething cake to his mouth like the sacrament. BLACK SCARABS boil out of the dark material. Swarm over his lips. Glittering insects that chitter and bite. Under the swarm his lips melt away. A horrific vision of teeth, black blood, dissolving bone. They are devouring him. FLASH ON: A fevered glimpse of the microscopic: cells rupture and bleed.

  • Anxieties and Aliens in Ridley Scott's Prometheus (2012)
Gazing upon the mother giving birth: anxieties and aliens in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (2012) > Samiksha Laltha School of Arts, Pietermaritzburg Campus, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. [email protected] ABSTRACT This article explores the female hero and more significantly, the female alien – the Trilobite – in Ridley Scott’s science fiction film, Prometheus (2012). The female alien reveals social, cultural and sexual anxieties that are projected onto the audience. Using a feminist film analysis, this article explores how horror in the science fiction film responds to gendered cultural shifts that disrupts the view that cinema is constructed for the viewing pleasure of a patriarchal society. Through a particular scene in the film, and through gazing at the mother alien giving birth, this article explores how cinema wields potential to disrupt the male gaze, and identify with female sexuality and the female body. Employing a feminist psychoanalytic framework, the article shows the film’s potential to grapple with the issues of the female unconscious, revealing the female alien as a site of power through her procreative potential. The Alien franchise has garnered significant attention from feminist film theorists, focusing predominantly on the alien Xenomorph. This analysis instead focuses on the alien Trilobite, as the mother and progenitor of the Xenomorph. Keywords: Alien; female gaze; science fiction film; castration; abjection. Aliens are necessary because the human species is alone. The lack that creates them is an Other to whom we can compare ourselves. Many fundamental qualities of spirit/mind appear to exist only in us, so we have nothing to measure them with, to allow us to see our limits, our contours, our connections (Csicsery-Ronay 2007:5).
