The Checkerboard (formerly the Psychadelic Shack) … on weekends Phil Guy’s band or Fenton Robinson’s entertain, with Buddy sitting in for a couple of numbers … Among others you can catch here are Junior Wells, James Cotton, Lefty Diaz, Hound Dog Taylor and Carey Bell (Living Blues 1973). Inledningsvis blev klubben samlingspunkt för huvud- sakligen lokala stammisar, men ganska snart letade sig även vita bluesvänner dit liksom kända artister. While in town, Bonnie Raitt dropped by Buddy Guy’s Checkerboard Lounge, attracting one of the largest white crowds ever seen in a black Chicago blues club (Living Blues, 1975). Checkerboard Lounge uppmärksammades i Europa 1977 genom BBC:s TV-serie All You Need Is Love, där det ingick avsnitt från klubben med Buddy Guy, Junior Wells och Magic Slim. Den 1 juni 1980 spelade Buddy Guys bror Phil “Blir det bra såhär?” och “Jimmy Reed, Jr” på Checkerboard; och två dagar senare framträdde Sylvia Embry, Andrew “Big I november 1981 besökte Rolling Stones Checker- Voice” Odom och Lefty Dizz.
